What are your serious opinions about Mortal Kombat X?

The_Furax

I accept nothing. Nothing is inevitable.
I am playing MKX but it hasn't attracted me yet as much as Injustice. I don't know but I still prefer Injustice in general. This is my current opinion about the game. ;)

I really enjoy this game and I'll be playing it for a long time a lot of people are going on about how great MK9 was... Honestly I hated it and went back to Marvel a few weeks after I started playing it, game felt weird and I wasn't a fan. I loved Injustice and that brought me to this forum and it looks like I'll be staying for MKX. I think it's the run button that really makes the game for me.

Had the game since launch, also have watched tons of pro matches. Its basically the SF4 of MK, in that the game revolves around mix-ups, footsies, and zoning - in that order. All characters, even zoning specialists, have to play footsies in this one. Its impossible to keep someone away for a whole match without being forced into footsie range.

I definitely prefer it over MK9, it flows better, feels better, and is just more fun overall. Though I definitely wouldn't mind if some of the 50/50 stuff was toned down. Like I said, I look at this game and I literally see SF4.

I feel like armor is way too powerful, most games that I've seen have one player pressuring the other until he uses an armored move to get out, then he pressures until he gets hit by an armored move. The fact that there are no armor breaking moves and also that armor protects you from throws too kind of makes them downright ridiculous. This is compounded by the fact that everyone has multiple armored moves.

Another issue I see is that the characters appear very "normalized" to me. Sure you can pick a slower character, but what do you get for it? Everyone has the same health, barring buffs or unique set up situations almost every character does roughly the same damage, and like I stated earlier, armored moves aren't unique to slower characters as everyone has them. It almost feels like the best characters will simply be the ones with the best frame data, because nothing else is truly unique.

I hope NRS fixes some things, I'd like to see grabs (at the very least command grabs) beat armor, I'd like to see some bigger disparity in terms of damage for slower characters/variations that have a hard time getting in and opening up the opponent. Oh, and lowering your hitbox should NOT make you dodge being thrown.

I also don't like how Scorpion fits into the game at all too. I acknowledge that he's way unsafe, but he can potentially get 30% from anywhere on the screen, if he doesn't, he'll eat 30%. Playing vs. him flat out feels like the entire match is pure guessing at all times.

MK9 absolutely had a lot of broken aspects to it, but it felt a lot more fun both to play and to watch in my opinion.

Where art thou, MKX Skarlet?
MKX is WAY better than MK9 and Injustice. The balance feels better, the game feels faster, it's more footsie based than both of those games, too. The music and soundtrack also craps on MK9 and Injustice.

I like pretty much everything about MKX and it's almost the perfect game to me. Also the competition is 10x harder and bigger than it was for any NRS game.

These next few years will be LEGENDARY.
I have a lot of respect for your dedication and skill in NRS games. I feel like I need to say that to allow myself some anti-flame armor because--

I don't know what being a 'Netherrealm Representative' means, but when I see that tag and see you saying it's way better and more balanced than MK9 I can't help but picture Ed Boon talking about the netcode improvements and how they're so much better. It sounds like a sales pitch, not fair and objective statements.

From what I've seen, MKX is no more balanced than MK9 was. If MKX is balanced, you should be able to pick any character in any variation, master them, and compete effectively in top level play. Is this true? I know you didn't say MKX "is balanced" - separate question. The balance feeling better is, again, like saying the netcode has been improved - yes, it has, but it's still heavily mediocre.

I don't think MK X is a party game at all. People thought that about Smash, too. Regardless it is a really condescending thing to say.

Anyway, my favorite partbof MK X is how Quan Chi shit talks during trance. It's fucking awesome. I may not be a Quan main because his playstyle doesn't suit me(I'm really emo about it), but he's awesome in this game personality wise.

People calling this a Party game while probably thinking Smash bros is a fighting game :DOGE

On a serious note, love it, on Par with MK9 but could change, much better than injustass.
Game seems to have a higher skill ceiling than the other 2

It feels very smooth, it has some very good ideas and general improvements to the core of the game and some character design.

BUT...

As other have said, it's completely littered with 50/50s. On top of that, many characters have armored launchers, some of which are safe, so you're always on the look out for those at random times, and as far as I've seen pressure as we know it doesn't exist thanks so almost every string being -4 or worse with little-to-no pushback, which loops back into the armored launcher bit where they can still 50/50 you in a way for trying to apply your moves back to them.

All in all, the 50/50s were a complete deal breaker for me and made me get rid of the game. They are absolutely ZERO fun to play against or use.

Someone mind explaining this "party game" bullshit to me?

I'm hearing it for this game. I heard it for Smash. Doesn't make any sense in either case.
I consider it a party game because it's full of unreactable 11 frame moves that lead to 40%+ damage, that don't realistically give the opponent a chance to defend themselves without making a blind guess. Lots of FG players like this mechanic, lots don't. Personally I can't take a game serious that doesn't give the opponent or myself a fair chance to react. 11 frames = 1/6th of a second to react in a 60 FPS game.

Tweaks to the framedata could salvage this 50/50 coin-flip-fest into something enjoyable for players with my mindset, but I don't see it happening.

P.S., just because players with our mindsets don't enjoy MKX's mechanics, doesn't mean we don't think it's a fun game, nor does it make you a badass to insult us because you do like it. Not you personally, but the others who take our criticism to heart.

I honestly have no idea how reptile is supposed to be played. He feels weird to me.
He has a gameplan similar to El Fuerte from USF4
You can whiff elbow dashes and then backdash to bait riskier punishers then Elbow dash back in for a whiff punish. This when they're not respecting the elbow dash threat.
Once they start respecting the threat of getting whiff punished by the elbow dash, the horizons opens for reptile, now you can whiff an elbow dash into B2, which is a 11 frame overhead and is +1 on block, or you can go for a 13 low that is -4 on block either way, add that to the fact that if you're using deceptive, you get an invisible setup and they will never see the overhead or the low coming, and if you get hit out of it, the first hit is null, doesn't count as hit and reptile takes no damage.

And he is more dangerous when he knocks you down with F21, 1+2 or elbow dash.

So my honest assesment so far:

Style - Great
Graphics - Also great
Speed/fluidity - Very good -- although it seems chunky sometimes due to the tons of blockstun

Footsies - Mostly nowhere to be found in a lot of matchups

The game prioritizes shoving lots of mixups down people's throats -- even moreso than in Injustice. The run button allows you to turn what would normally not be oki-able hard knockdowns into guessing games from as much as 75% screen away in some cases. This is aided by the prevalence of fast, longer-ranged overhead starters (Kung's f2, D'Vorah's f2, Sub's B2, Quan's b2) that are very strong.

In addition, much of the cast has canned footsie strings that allow you to travel about half screen in 2-3 hits. Even if the first hit whiffed, the others might reach. The game is absolutely dominated by them, and combined with the run button they're the reason we're seeing less footsie/spacing based gameplay than Injustice or MK9.

Another side result of these strings, along with the combo system, is that there's a LOT of corner carry in this game. There are several top characters who will automatically corner you nearly every time they open you up. Any Raiden combo ending in superman, most of Lao's BnB's, Jax's combos, and a good deal of Kung Jin's stuff, Sub Zero etc. This means that you end up spending a lot more time in the corner, blocking your way out of mixups.

There's a lot less spacing and a lot more staying in people's faces due to the combination of those three factors (run button, long-distance strings, and corner carry). But this makes it a personal taste. Anyone who's a fan of nonstop rushdown, continuous mixups, and being in people's faces all the time will love this game.

I like the fact that unlike MK9, a lot of moves are negative, which means it's a lot harder to just throw move after move out on block. Having far fewer 0 on block or plus frame moves forces people to really consider which buttons they hit and removes a lot of braindead pressure. However for this to matter most, you want all characters to play by those rules. As balance patches are released, the fixes will no doubt help this part of the gameplay shine.

I ask because "party game" implies that a game can't be taken seriously because of silly or random mechanics. Something akin to a board game like Sorry.
