What's new

What are your serious opinions about Mortal Kombat X?

Faded Dreams V

Retired June 2012. Unretired June 2013.
So the game has been out for over a month now... and I have not played it at all or even seen it in action much since I don't own a PS4/XONE.

Are you guys enjoying it as much as MK9 and/or Injustice when they first came out? Like it more? Think someone who didn't enjoy Injustice will like MKX?

Also, do any zoning and anti-zoning characters exist in the roster, or is this a rushdown fest?

Let your opinions be known!

That's about right.
The premise is pretty simple. Get a knockdown. If your opponent has no meter perform a 50/50. Run up and 50/50 etc. There are anti zoners in this game though. Mileena is a decent anti zoner who can roll under projectiles for a combo punish or ex tele kick into a combo. It's fun, but is no MK9. I think I would of taken a UMK9 without the input bug, meter drain, and p1 advantage. Along with a balance patch and new characters/levels.

MKX is WAY better than MK9 and Injustice. The balance feels better, the game feels faster, it's more footsie based than both of those games, too. The music and soundtrack also craps on MK9 and Injustice.

I like pretty much everything about MKX and it's almost the perfect game to me. Also the competition is 10x harder and bigger than it was for any NRS game.

These next few years will be LEGENDARY.

I like it but I think the game is far too reliant on 50/50s and vortexes instead of actual footsies, and it just doesn't have that magic that MK9 had for me. :[

Edit: Wow really REO? You think this game is more footsie orientated than MK9? Odd, this game revolves around coin flips at high level play. Definitely not very footsie orientated. Footsies seem to play a very minor part of most matches until a knockdown is scored and then it's just set-play after set-play for the most part.
(Of course this doesn't apply to all characters, but quite a lot)

The greatest bad player of all time.
The game has its hickups but I am really enjoying this one. I wouldnt say its worth buying a next gen for but its a very good game. NRS does gets some bad flak for some glitches in the game but those aside we got a very solid game and Im happy I invested in it. Defense is rewarded greatly in this game more so then rushdown but a great player can make rushdown work just as well. Its a fair happy medium that we got and hope it stays around for a while.

I'm new to MK. I played Injustice a little before, and this game feels better, although I'm more interested in Injustice characters than MK characters.

My main complaint is that anti-airing sucks in this game. I come from SF where anti-airs rock. But in this game jip often stuffs your uppercut, and not many armor specials work good in the anti-air department. (A few are excellent though like Reptile's mb claw scratch or Sub Zero's mb ice burst).

How do you feel about all the 50/50's and vortexes?

Some of the variations need work

Some characters feel designed for a completely different game but the game itself is pretty good. Most of the cast feels strong to play, I'm happy with what I got

I'm enjoying the game more than MK9 and infinitely more than I did Injustice. I personally just couldn't stay interested in Injustice, not sure if I could pinpoint the exact reason, maybe interactables played too big of a role for my taste, they're done much better in MKX. The only thing I could really knock about MKX at the moment is that it seems centered around 50/50s, but hopefully over time that will seem like less of a problem as the meta changes and people learn the game more.

As far as zoning goes, the character that's given me the biggest problems with projectiles so far is Kano, mainly because his knives recover so fast. So yes, there is zoning, but in general it is probably harder to do than previous games because of the run mechanic.

I love this game. I got a next gen system just for it.

As someone else mentioned before, footsies are a lot more important in this game. The game feels pretty balanced. I don't like some of the vortexes in this game...and yeah I'm a little disappointed that some of my faves aren't top tier...oh well.

There are a lot of viable characters in this game regardless.

Oh and side note; the new characters are badass! Kotal Kahn, Ferra/Torr, D'Vorah, and Cassie are just a few of the new characters who are great.

I've never been more hyped for a game than I was for this. From the moment I saw the ED Boon Countdown tweet I had high expectations. Other than the lack of GGPO for online, all of my expectations have been met and even exceeded in some areas.

I like it more than MK9, less than Injustice. I loved a lot of the characters in Injustice, Grundy is my favorite NRS character by far, Zod and MMH looked really interesting(although I stopped playing it around the time they came out) and several of the starting characters had really fun although incredibly unbalanced mechanics and skillsets. MK9 felt more like a test, a fun game that I like a lot but when held up to MKX vastly inferior and dated. The game plays well if you like this style of fighting game(It's a nice blend of Injustice and MK9) and they really fleshed out characters that were in MK9 nicely. Sub, Scorp, Reptile and Ermac for example are very similar but drastically improved in both depth and their flow and moveset. They didn't really take so much away as they did add and tweak what they had. Which is nice to see.

The speed overall is nice, I'd say currently zoning is very weak which is kinda unfortunate but you can zone and zone well. Just pick Quan, Jacqui, Kenshi or Kitana and you can definitely zone in a lot of matchups but with the addition of running and just the massive amount of offensive options most characters have you're going to have a hard time doing so.

If I had to list complaints it would be with the lack of good grapplers, a lot of characters have command grabs but none have ones that are as strong as I'd like them to be. Jason's command grab comes close but the fact that it whiffs on so many moves in this game really annoys me. Also most of the new characters are really boring to me. I'd say Dvorah is probably the most interesting, but even she isn't all that interesting in terms of her mechanics. Cassie, Jacqui, Kung Jin, Ferra/Torr and Takeda all really bore me. I think it's mostly their mechanics aren't new or refreshing. Ferra/Torr had huge potential and Takeda is sort of unique but not enough for me to like him. They all just do basic things and they look very plain and dull. I had high hopes for F/T, Kotal and Dvorah but so far all three have been really underwhelming. Also I felt the returning cast to be filled with my least favorite characters, Liu, Sonya, Kitana, and Mileena have never interested me so having them fill up so much space along with all these new characters is pretty unfortunate for me. On the positive side Jason introduced some fun mechanics, unfortunately he feels incomplete, too simplistic really, which fits him well but it does not make for a complete and well rounded character.

Also as a spectator most of the cast isn't all that fun for me to watch. It's gotten better now but seeing Kung Jins and Cassies everywhere at first was depressing, they're both just so boring to watch. Now we're seeing a bit more variety with most characters seeing play. It's mostly specific variations that aren't seeing play more so than any one character. The least played characters I've seen so far are probably Jacqui, Ferra/Torr, Johnny Cage and Jason. At least competitively. But even those I expect to show up a lot more in the future.

But overall, a pretty balanced game, there are some stand out top tier characters for sure but I'd only say maybe 3 or 4 characters are bottom mid tier. Much improved over MK9 in the overall scheme, I still wish I had Cyrax but I'm making due with what they gave me. I have high hopes for Tremor and Predator so hopefully along with the rest of the game it looks to be only getting better from here.
