What's new

I have a serious question here.

I Break Hearts, Not Combos
No one is really going to say it, but honestly if the player is well-known/respected they won't call him a spammer.

A character that is a zoner is a character that thrives on extra space between the two players. A person who is zoning is trying to create or control space. Spamming can mean anything. Spamming combos, spamming fireballs, spamming strings.

The only thing I call spamming is when I happen to drop a combo and get hit by an insta uppercut from a guy who was obviously pounding D2 the whole time hoping I would make a mistake.

Spam is a word thrown out way too much. There is just good play, and bad play, to me.

Spamming = throwing the same move out over and over with zero thought. For example, a Sheeva who keeps using teleport stomp and gets caught in Kitana's fan lift every time.

Zoning = preventing the opponent from getting in because the opposing character might gain the advantage. There are other uses such as running out time, baiting a teleport, etc. If you are zoning and the opponent keeps eating your projectiles, why should you stop?

It seems like someone got salty. I'm taking the time to write this during my stats lab. Characters like Noob and Sindel have a very hard time up close, most of their game must be played from a distance. I'm a Kitana player, and if I'm playing against a Cage or Sonya who can easily beat me up close, there's no reason for me to not zone them. If zoning is beating your strategy, that shows that there's something in your game that must be changed.

Zoning:
- In fighting games, a tactic revolving around keeping your opponent away from you by any means at your disposal.

Spamming:
- In fighting games, alternative terminology for "zoning" employed by people who are bad at blocking.

No such thing as spam, I hate when people complain about "spam".
If I was a Kano or Noob, I would throw knives and shadows all game long. It's the opponent problem if they can't get out of it. This is basic strategy not "spam".

I'd also like to point out there are very different ways of zoning in this game. Take sub-zero and smoke. Sub has his clones which are useful to help make strings safe and make sure the opponent stays off him. But in the corner, Sub can become a rushdown beast with this thing. Smoke uses his smoke clouds to keep away, not that he's much of a threat at long range since his smoke bombs don't do chip damage.

Kabal, kitana and noob saibot are more conventional zoners. They throw projectiles at you at the right times (for kabal, all the time) to keep you away. Kitana also has that square wave.

"Spam" is the equivalent of saying "whatever" in an intelligent discussion - it means you've been defeated but do not possess the humility to admit it. They will not get better.

Just to clarify, I do think there is such thing as spam. That exists when the "spammer" doesn't change their tactics when the move they keep spamming keeps failing. We've all played the teleport-happy scorpions who put no thought into what they're doing but hoping to hit.

How many times do i have to say this?

(noun) Spamming (SPAM-EING): Doing the same move over and over.
EX: The scrub Is Spamming KL spins.***

(noun) Zoning (ZOE-NING): Keeping an opponent away using specific tools or moves.
EX: Kitana and Kabal are amazing at Zoning

***Notice that spamming doesn't have to be projectiles.

You can zone by spamming (which is very predictable by the way), or (the smarter alternative) you can zone without spamming.

Also Spamming has nothing to do do with projectiles, and zoning for that matter. Its simply doing the same thing over and over. Frankly, you suck if you cant beat a spammer.

This. You die to "spam", you deserve to lose. If your move keeps working, why not keep using it?

Spam definitely exsists. Like if I posted 20 messages in a row on this forum, I would be spamming. It's just repetiton.
Zoning = Spacing control
Turtling = Playing keep away

to add to this:

(noun) Zoning (ZOE-NING): Keeping an opponent away using specific tools or moves. Also, doing the same move over and over again and it is working

This is exactly my distinction. I recently played a Sheeva that just tried to telestompt literally every other move. So I ended up always counting with fan lift. It didn't matter that I punished it every time, he kept doing it over and over again. Spam, thoughtless. Zoning is carefully creating space. A Jax I played tonight I zoned. I can't just throw fans mindlessly, he'll get to me eventually and up close Kitty is done for. I had to vary how often I threw out fans, the height, etc. Also had to know when to square wave over him when he got too close. Another Jax I played a few weeks ago was better and eventually figured out how to get in on me, so he started winning more often. It then was anyone's game.

EndofGameBoss

That's about right.
As a Sindel player I can assure you people generally dislike her. Her whole point is to knock you across the screen to use her projectiles. It's just what she was made to do. As far as MK goes, Sindel, Noob, and Ermac are zoning characters in this game. Anyone outside of those three that spams projectiles is just spamming lol. For instance Johnny Cage. He definitely isn't a zoner, he is a rushdown character so anyone that spams his goo balls haha are just scrubs.

Spamming and Zoning are one in the same. Spamming is just the term used by people who fail to have a strategy against the obvious they would rather continually jump at you from full screen instead of timing jump/dash/block. Pretty much a loss to these people will always have something else to blame for it.

Not entirely, I think it's any strategy that defeats the scrub. Like I like to play my Smoke keep away, and I get told that I spam the teleports. I also try to use many Smokeballs to keep my opponents in check. But to combo-start rather than to keep them out.

Yesterday I played a kano that spent the whole game jumping to the opposite end of the screen and tossing his knives at me, moving in only made me eat his cannonballs, probably the most painful game i have ever played

I WILL EAT THIS GAME
Mmmmmm...Spam.

If nothing else, I now know what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow.

(I lean towards the "No such thing as spam" argument. Just because they beat you by throwing 76 fans and the occasional air punch doesn't mean they can't walk up to you, wave, smile, and break your jaw with a pretty kick. Strategy = $$$.)

Neutral duck his knives, right after one soars over your head, hold block - release block when he throws another block and repeat the process. If he tries to hit you with a ball when you're crouched doing this, you'll block his ball, and you can punish him. He has to approach you if he wants to do any damage to you. Kano has very good anti airs, so don't even attempt to jump in on him, he'll hit you with an up ball or F1 and combo you. Also, watch out for his x-ray, if he lunges at you glowing red quickly jump backwards.

Kano has a decent low and pretty good pokes, be wary of those, as well. His choke frametraps are pretty good.
