Does a character need a 50/50 to be good?

I think this game has potential for really good neutral but we'll see where the meta goes. It's NRS so some characters will have their dirt but I don't think a 50/50 is necessary to win if your footsies are good.

I agree with the OP.

EDIT: Though I do think Wound puts it pretty accurately. Regardless, this is week 2 stuff, the game has a long way to go to be fleshed out.

The only way a 50/50 would ever possibly be a necessity to make a good character in any fighting game, would be if players were completely locked down in movement and not allowed to move away from each other like in "knock 'em Sock 'em" robots.

People think far too narrowly with ways to open people up these days, a lot of people would benefit to going back to complete basics when it comes to fighting games.

There's no way a thread like that would have any credibility this early in the game when what we don't know far exceeds what we do know.

One thing to bear in mind though is that there isn't an absolute answer. Everything depends on the context (ie the game and how it works). In a game where early meta seems to be rushdown heavy, and pressure on knockdown, running to close the gap and similar stuff are running rampant early on, 50/50's will appear overwhelming early on. It's important to go back to how much everyone's opinions changed throughout MK9's meta and Injustice's meta, and keep in mind that nobody has any idea what they're talking about right now. Even if it sounds like you do, you probably don't. You'll look back in a year and shake your head.

Some characters are gonna get the Scorpion treatment that didn't need it while others are gonna get the Bane treatment that didn't need it.

However, with that said I've had some players I play with get better with blocking his 50/50 a little more consistently since his low is quicker than his overhead. But it doesn't really matter since he's safe on both of them and you can throw people's timing off by delaying, lol.

I played king last night abd he ABSOLUTELY destroyed me in the neutral not because of his 50/50s. Everything he has is pretty reactable in terms of highlow you just need to assess risk reward.

For me, it all comes down to the overall character dynamic. What makes or breaks a character: what do you have to do in order to take away their best options, like Kitana's fans for an example. She uses them to zone out along with good pokes, but take away the fans, then she's forced to play more offensively with her mixup game.

If a character who doesn't have much of a mixup game that compensates for that particular weakness, then it could be a problem. Some characters may have to rely on 50/50 in order to get the damage while others obviously don't. I don't think that they need it 100% to be good, just may be a good way to net damage.

Most characters in the game are averaging past 30% meterless for damage, while others may not have that luxury, yet if they score a knockdown, they have full momentum to overwhelm an opponent.

I am sure king knows the scorpion matchup better now (as he played me after the fatal 8 and has played slips and etc.) but I feel some need to watch that match again and see what I did to avoid his up close game as much as possible.

Sort of, but the potency isn't just in the 50/50's; it's also how they combine with the huge advantage on pokes. If you didn't have that, it'd still be a little earier to boil it down to reads. But there are several characters where, when they hit you with a d1 or d3, are given a 50/50 immediately -- which may or may not lead to either vortex, or some kind of looped guessing game.

Imo although you can try to bait pokes, someone who's fishing for them will still end up landing one, and then you're going to have to guess (maybe for the rest of your lifebar). The risk vs. reward on the poke confirmed into 50/50 is in many cases a lot less than a raw run-up 50/50 itself.

And ability to convert almost any situation in 30% + combo meterlessly.

50/50 is a great tool. Easy for you and a headache for your opponent.(especially if low and overhead in same combo mixup)

Look, for example NRS trying to make new character, which based on policy:
1) you only have 10 points to spend
2) Choose from :
-safe normals - 3 points
- high damage meterless combos - 3 points
- mobility tools - 3 points
- 50/50s - How much would it cost ? 3-5 points?

MK9 had a block button. 50/50s were over-trumped by best rushdown-best zoning and 90% resets. :D
