I pick characters based on how they play. Is the character fun? Does he/she fit my play style?

About two months before MK9 released, I thought I was going to main Noob Saibot. He was the coolest looking character pre release. Unfortunately, the play style was too linear for my taste. I eventually mained Sonya in MK9 because her MS was so rewarding to use. She could bully her way in and do massive damage and was an all around great character.

I can't wait until I click with an MKX character like I did with Sonya. I just hope it doesn't take 12 months this time .

To answer how I pick my main. I take a handful of characters I like pre-release based on their look, sound, gameplay, lore, etc, and use them first. Then I try out the entire cast. I sometimes find characters that fit me well that I really never imagined maining (Cody in SSF4). But other times, the character(s) I wanted to use pre-release end up being my main (Ares in INJ, Smoke in MK9, Bison in SF4, Hulk/Dante/Sentinel in MvC3).

As for my pre-release mains, right now it's Scorpion, FerraTorr and Goro. I don't like maining popular characters or characters a lot of people use, but Scorpion's gameplay has a lot of UMK3 in it so I'm obligated to use him. FerraTorr and Goro are the only Juggernautish characters (so far) so I'm definitely trying them out. If Tremor and/or Shinnok are in, I'm 100% using them as well.

KK hasn't really interested me, he looks too much like that one character in SFxT. But who knows.

For a couple of months, then I get bored and quit. Hopefully MKX can keep my attention long enough, I have high hopes! For example, I just beat Dying Light, and not too long ago I beat Dragon Age Inquisition. Dying Light is awesome, just wish there was more too it.

My mains choose me. The elder gods have spoke to me through a vision. It showed that would be an elite representative for Raiden and possibly Fujin as well. The gods are still communicating with me on my fate concerning Fujin, they have told told me it is unclear to them how fate will unfold my destiny as a wind god.

You missed the most important reason to main a character: Because they're just fuckin' fun.
Sure, I'll play a character that looks badass(Kotal,) but no way in hell am I gonna go and say I'm maining him right out of the gate.
Now, if he turns out to just be super enjoyable to play then that may change.

I try and focus on two or three characters...
I pick one based on how much I like to play with them...
one based on who the most of my family members is named the same as...
and I may not have room for a 3 this time...

- Personality - I just can't main a boring-ass person, like Raiden or Liu Kang.

- Aesthetics - I also can't main an ugly character. I guess I'm shallow like that.

- Playstyle - I prefer characters that can zone decently but are primarily rushdown. I can't main a character that heavily favours one of the two archetypes, such as The Flash or Cyborg. Generally all I need is a projectile, though, and I'm good.

If I like all 3, I main them (e.g- Nightwing). Although they aren't all weighted equally. For example, Cody by far has my favourite personality, but I main Sakura because she has my favourite playstyle.

Right now Cassie looks cool, is hilarious, and she has zoning potential = Main.

Cassie Cage, Kotal Kahn and Kitana but I will only choose one as my main. It might change when I play the campaign because When I pick my main in Mk9. I went through the story mode and felt how certain characters play. When I did that, Sonya blade was my main because she felt great.

I just pick the biggest, baddest motherfucker there is. That's why my mains have been Bane, Grundy, Doomsday, Zangief, T Hawk, Hugo, Juggernaut, Thanos, Colossus, etc. in past fighters and will be Goro, Ferra/Torr, Kotal Kahn, etc. in MKX.

you speak my language. I like characters that look like they'd have to walk through doors sideways and shit

Although generally I play the characters I think are most fun, so I don't always end up with a big guy... Just almost always

Has to be bad ass and have hook swords :-p...If Mavado makes the cut and plays descent, I'll go with him. Other than that I can always find something cool in every old school MK character.

The "Who looks and feels the most badass from the early footage" was the closest to way I pick my main characters in fighting games so voted for that reason. I am character driven so I pick what ever character I am most drawn to and is my favorite out of the cast in terms of design,storyline, and move set.

Although it can get hard for me to choose a character if there is more than one character that I really like on the roster and am drawn too. If that happens I go off of which ever one of my favorite characters out of the roster has a gameplay design I clicked with the most. Which might be the case for me with Mortal Kombat X.

So far in Mortal Kombat X I am mostly interested in new Mortal Kombat characters. Personally I think that the 3 new Outworld characters are the most interesting characters that have been introduced into the Mortal Kombat franchise since MK2.

Right now for me it is down to either D'vorah,Ferra Torr, or Kotal Kahn. Either that or Sub-Zero (favorite MK ninja) or Mileena (favorite OG MK female) for old school MK characters. I guess I am going to have to wait and see who I click with most gameplay wise when the game comes out to find out which character is going to be my main.

Typically, I main a character for their look and personality. Once I pick a character, that's it.

Hence why I lived and died by Quan Chi in MK9.

I had a secondary in Reptile for the same reasons.

Now a days...I have no idea what I'll do. It's like picking between my children.

I pick based mainly on how the character look and play, or how they look like they play.

Well for me I picked mine based on who I've always used; my favorite characters. Subby and Kitana for example, although I do admit footage of other characters before launch and tournament inspires me to mess around in the lab so I at least know the basics of the fighting that character.
