Fight recording/replays. What you are interested in, if at all?

Hello there.

Recently I was thinking about it and realized (after doing fast "research") that a lot of FGs out there have feature that allows you to record fights to access them later. AFAIK games like SSF4, DoA5, VF5FS, SC5, KI can do this. Utility can vary, but general idea is the same. The game records N latest fights and there's usually an option to "permanently" save some or all of those to watch them one day.

Thinking about it, I feel that MK kind of lags behind FG world and I think that this should be fixed. Obviously, it's not the top priority, but it would be nice to have. I should note that technically we even had everything it takes in MK9 and IGAU, but unfortunately, recording could only be used in training mode there.

Upsides of this feature are obvious:
- analyzing your own gameplay to spot ways to improve;
- during tournaments, recording fights that won't make it on stream otherwise so everyone could see them anyways;
- ability to outsource your tech videos to your friends so that they can make videos proper (no more recording on potato if you don't have anything better);
- availability of compressed format to share your recordings without having to run video grabber software or something else and without everyone having to download huge videos - useful to ask for tips, show some strategy and for any reason really;
- you can save something as soon as some WTF moment happens without having to recreate it, which isn't always easy;
- with some additional functionality you can do something video ripping can't: track inputs, watch frame-by-frame, see hitboxes and how they worked out this time... Hell, even maybe just make an eyecandy of a video should recorder allow you to control camera and the like. In short, anything that has no place during actual match...

In this thread I'd like you to ask if you are interested in this feature at all, and if you are, what features would you like to see/use? Please share your thoughts!

Sure, it would be a great addition to the game. I use this function in USFIV all the time. But as you said, it's not really a top priority atm. NRS has been lagging in the whole netcode area of fighting games which should be their main focus. Everything else is a bonus. I rather have a good netcode and a very limited amount of online modes than vice versa.

I would love for MKX to have a recording system similar to KI, and maybe add a little bit more. I hope they have a feature that allows you to pause the game frame by frame.

If we get to record our matches it will do wonders to the community as well, i really hope @colt and the team do not let this out.

Street Fighter offline battle log is incredibly small, it doesn't allows you for more than 10 matches and you can't save them, though you can upload directly to your youtube account.

I remember that our equipment once wasn't good for streaming the tekken tournament because it was cutting on live feed quality so we had to cut short, but we managed to record almost all tournament in the battle long, with the 1st 3 sets of combats being erased because we all played into a single console.

If MKX get to use this system, and have a battle log equaly as large as TTT2 it would be a huge acomplishment, sometimes we play for 3 hours straight and the get about 80 to 100 offline battles.

i do love replays but i guess there's really no reason for it on the hext gen consoles. i just want them to put as much work as they can into the netcode. and a spectator mode online would be nice.

XboxOne and PS4 have recording feature installed, haven't they?
I don't know tbh. If that's the case, then you may scratch one reason to have the feature out, although I feel that keeping and transferring record files that are just few kBytes is still less of a chore to deal with than working with full videos. Granted, I maybe just have to keep up with times, :)

Although this kinda means that replay feature, should it be present, must have features that you can't have with video recording, or those that are pretty unwieldy to work with when you're dealing with vid, like those I've mentioned in the OP, takeover options and the like.

Agreed with size and accessability issues.
As far as I know Xbox One has a feature which works in a background mode and saves recorded video after a command (last 15 minutes or smth like that) or you can start an immidiate recording. NVidia GPUs has the same feature for PCs with their ShadowPlay software(you can set last 15-10-5 minutes).
Don't know if PS4 is as capable.

Built-in replay function would be great but I doubt any developer will spend resources on such functionality when current game systems provide a descent solution even with some faults.
