MKX "3-styles" - good or bad?

xray is in no way a comeback mechanic. A comeback mechanic is only available when or somehow enhanced by losing, like ultra, like xfactor, like rage, and to a lesser degree like clash. Just "losing" doesn't grant you an xray like all those others, xray is just something else to do with your meter. If xray's are comeback mechanics, so are ex moves and breakers.
Not saying its. I am saying it was meant to be for low level players.

The diferent between SF4 and MK9 is that sf4 has a dedicated bar of meter just for ultras and the more you get hit the more damage it does. In mk9 the meter is shared with breakers, enhanced moves for more invincibility or armor etc. And the X-ray does the same amount of damage, it doesnt matter if you have 10% or 80% of a life bar.

X-Ray si still meant to be a comeback mechanic for low level but it was irrelevant at a high level.

I like and played sf4 for a few years but I'm not blind to what makes the game what.

Haha play me on xbl. Add me. Lets play sf4 and see how much of a superior player you are hahahah
I have PSN, and to be fair I could give a damn what you say since you gave what is quite literally the poorest excuse to hate the revenge meter. I could make an argument that Ultras aren't as important at high level either, because most people will not fall for wakeup ultras, rather use them in combos or in situations like chip. You could just absorb the damage with focus and it fills the meter as well, allowing you not to lose life unless you get hit as it regenerates. If the player has shit fundamentals and footsies, one ultra will not win them the match. I'd rather not play a dude online for bragging rights, not my thing anyway.

I don't give a damn for being a superior player, i'm just calling out your lack of knowledge which was very apparent in your posts.

EDIT: Also, X-Rays were/are shit which is why they aren't really used too much in competitive play, except to do over 30% damage to prevent breakers. Supers and Ultras are much more useful in comparison, and most people just hold on to the meter in MK9 for breakers which is a comeback mechanic in itself imo. That's just X-Rays not being too useful compared to breakers, rather than it being a "low-level" comeback mechanic.

That's the most silliest thing you can ever say, is a mechanic in a damn game to be taken advantage of is low level. If you wanna be good at these types of games you gotta take advantage of everything you have access to. Whatever credentials you have must not be major enough to throw out your very unpopular, and imo "low-level" opinion.

you realise this is the competitive home of mortal kombat. this is the one place where its ok for me to expect competitivity. so please take your FUN over to MKO or MKU. people always says "WHAT ABOUT FUN, ARE U FORGETTING ABOUT THE FUN?!" i have fun competing and no visual gimmicks like throwing old ladies as a weapon doesnt turn me on sorry.
Wrong.. MKU has produced many top players.. It is not just about casual fun,.. Also, the person you quoted is right, its a damn video game,, you're supposed to have fun.

did you even read the post you quoted? as the post you quoted clearly explained i do have fun playing against likeminded opponents. holding hands talking about the story while performing specials without conviction is not my idea of fun.

The main issue with having ultra's on a separate meter has nothing to do with comeback mechanics. The biggest con is that it reduces the number of choices a player needs to make during a match.

Resource management is a huge part of fighting games ( or games with meter at least) Deciding when to spend meter, how to spend it, what to spend it on, how to build it... These kinds of choices change constantly depending on the match up, the life total and round score and good players know how to get more of their resources than bad players.

What the ultra meter does is give players an almost guaranteed resource every round that is not used on anything else. This lessens the meter management requirements and removes choices from the players.

So yes, ultras do make the game easier to play, but so what? Why is that a bad thing to make the game more accessible? The better player still wins and how many super complex game are getting 2,000 entrants at Evo? Anime fighters have a million different meters and character specific gimmicks and are lucky to get 100 entrants at a major. And when's the last time anyone saw VF with a decent player base in the United States?

Everyone wants a deep game but if you make it too complex you sacrifice accessibility and raise the barrier of entry which is also a bad idea. SF4 has found a decent balance. I hope MKX does the same.

Your idea may differ from others, quit being a kill joy for those who find those things, " fun ". Also, instead getting on the people who like story lines, join me in trying to rid the place "tym", of the guys who just want females to fap to ;) Those are the fools who need to either find another website, or actually enjoy the real world and find a girl friend...

Khrome is a liquid metal ninja concept that I and others thought of, it's a more imaginative fan made character based on old sci-fi movies than Ferra/Torr, which is an obvious Master Blaster rip-off from Mad Max Series.
I know what it is and no, no it isn't, and I don't know why anybody would aside from the bias that they created it. But I'm not about to derail this thread about a topic that already has it's own topic.

By the way, I called ferra/torrs inspiration eons ago.

False. Sf4 has the low skill level which is invincible wake ups, mashing reversals and turtling and the high skill level which is one frame links, hkd setups and fadc. There is no middle ground and nobody in one group wants to play the other because those matches are totally unfun for both parties.

I actually had similar concerns to what the OP was saying, didn't want to post something like that however due to the resulting backlash lol.

I recall watching the ATP podcast were Rip described the alterations as not to drastically different. This only means that the BETA is like this, the resulting game could be entirely different, so any speculation doesn't hold much weight. Despite this, I do have a few concerns:

1) If the variations are too similar:
 • Then how would that make a potential bad matchup better? V1 might be a 6-4, but V2 and V3 could be a 7-3. The grooves won't solve every characters bad matchups (to think this is naive in my opinion). In some cases, they will make them worse. And if all three versions suck, and I'm not a character loyalist and want to win, wouldn't a tourney player just pick a different character that covers the match up better?
 • Or likewise, V1 could be an 8-2 while V2 and V3 is a 7-3. Gives you a better chance, but still a shitty matchup. If there's another character that is clearly better, why wouldn't a person switch to another character entirely?
2) If the variations are drastically different:
 • This increases the chances of matchups being covered better however....
 • Then one version of the character may handle the majority of the cast better, making the other versions useless.
Of course this is mere speculation at this point. However, I still think it should be discussed in a CIVIL manner, instead of going at each others throats. I think the versions is a smart idea, but man, there are a lot of ways it could backfire.

In a perfect world, each character would have all 3 variations be able to deal with all the matchups. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure this won't be the case. However I don't want it scrapped out like the OP mentioned. All I know is NRS has put a boat load of stress and rebalancing issues on their dev team. If it works then great, if it backfires, pop open some popcorn and enjoy the oncoming knee-jerk reactions that will flood TYM after the 2-month honeymoon period when the game drops. :D

This system is just one of those things were you just have to wait until some time pass's after release to judge.

imo I hope the system ends up with majority of the cast having 1 dominate variation that stands out as the best to user overall and the other 2 variations will be used for specific MUs that are real bad which would keep the counter picking at a limit but still makes the system viable enough that it works.

I almost forgot, what is most important, and WILL be the deciding factor on how bad matchups are, is how good the footsie game of MKX is going to be. The game should be made to where, no matter what matchup, the player with the most solid fundamentals be the victor the majority of the time.

If specials neglect the neutral game, as what @Belial was trying to say earlier (which has been so common in mk9 and injustice), then the groves aren't going to be as effective as they should be. I hope the NRS team really work to make the neutral game the primary and main focus point for MKX.

I think this is exactly what will end up happening.

What do you mean by turtling? Because footsies are a huge part of SF4(See EVO top 8 this year). And a big part of footsies is sometimes turtling until your opponent makes a mistake.

Even you know Ferra/Torr is a rip-off while Khrome is not a rip-off because he isn't like the T1000, he is a ninja.

Actually, I don't know for a fact because they never admitted what their inspiration was as far as I can tell. That's just my guess. And yeah your right, Khrome isn't 100% like the t1000, he reminds me a lot more of some other types of characters created by some video game company that shares the same name as a WW2 battle. I wonder what it could be.

The thing is I didn't come up with liquid metal concept, it was a community suggestion back at MKO when the Khrome statue was released publicly. The only thing I did was be the first one to draw Khrome in the way I saw fit, which was a white ninja because MK doesn't have one yet. That Khrome statue is plain and bland.

Khrome will never be in Mortal Kombat because they cannot use any fan-made ideas without legal issues. I hate to be mean but please shut up about it already.

And by your logic Khrome is just a rip off of Ryu Hayabusa as is every other Ninja in MK. Dont worry though, because it is stupid logic.

It's irrelevant who created it, you, or joe schmo on MKO. My point wasn't even on the statue, it was the irony of the statement on who's character is more imaginative.

Depends on how they do it. It's a shit ton of work either way though. You need to come up with 3 creative styles for each character and then balance each one vs other members of the cast. It's going to be very very tricky and I hope like hell they're up to it.

I did watch them. For all 7 characters. With a combined Grand total of like 6 minutes of legitimate gameplay. I'll reserve my freakouts for when I have more solid information.

Besides, just like igau and mk9 before it most people on this site nit - picking beta footage a year before release apart won't sick around for more than 2 months after the game is released anyway.

I'm confused as to why I read half these threads anyway.
