The "This game is random" talking point

Is it over? On the final KTP Slips predicted that results would stabilize and the era of inconsistency and upsets would end. This seems to be happening. Let's compare the top 8's of UFGT and MLG. Theo, Whiteboi, Forever King and myself all made top 8 at both events. That's half the top 8! FilipinoMan and Carl placed at UFGT but didn't at MLG. However it's not like they got blown up, they were still in the MLG top 16. Pig was the opposite. He placed top 16 at UFGT and moved up to top 8 at UFGT. We are seeing more consistent results and less crazy upsets. They still happen(Red Reaper defeating DJT) but that's always going to be the case. There was so much talk about the nature of 50/50 mixups and interactables causing randomness but that isn't supported by the current results.

Let's discuss this.

Is it because we've moved to 3/5?

Is it because players are leveling up, both in fundamentals and match up knowledge, and the cream is rising to the top?

Are the top tier taking over?

There's two more talking points I want to address. We always hear from certain critics that "this game has no footsies" or "this game takes no fundamentals" yet has anyone noticed more and more the players with strong footsies are the most consistent?

There was so much talk of how interactables and the nature of the 50/50 offense made the game random but that's clearly not showing in recent results.

This mean you don't like me?
I seriously think it's less that we're all used to the dirt or 'randomness' the game has and more that we're used to the playstyle that is required from the way the game has shaped up. Very few matches are ever called out as flukes anymore, and characters are less the cause of a player's praise or disdain as it is the player or their persona. I really do think 3/5 has played a huge part in this, simply due to the fact that even if it didn't change much, players feel they actually had a fighting chance and feel satisfied deep down no matter what the result. I mean, how many 0-2 come back wins did we see at MLG based on the streamed matches alone?

Oh and a BIG BIG thing to take note of:Many people are neglecting to.....oh um, looks like we're gonna take a quick break.

Cue elevator music.

If everyone from GGA and the east coast were present do you think MLG would have had the same results?
No. That's the nature of any tournament. You throw Max in the bracket and it makes my life harder. That is consistent though.

Yeah - I don't see it as random but there are a lot of good players so I don't think it is Kabal/Cyrax era yet (maybe closer with Aquaman). If you throw Saltface, Harold, Revolver, PPJ, Max in the pools I think you will have much different results

That's about right.
Well, I'll give my opinion as a spectator. I feel like there is still a random factor that can persuade matches, and that is the stages. I've seen players go down and make a comeback because they were smart enough to switch stages that were advantageous to their specific character. Stages shouldn't be of importance at all in a fighting game. With that said, the best match I've ever seen in IGAU happened this past weekend with Jups vs Theo. The "footsie" play was phenomenal.

Damn, I like the 3/5 setup more. Plus longer matches :-/

Numbers drop off over time, happens with our games but not Smash and UMvC3 apparently. Really sucks.

I think its all 3 to be honest.
3/5 definitely has had an impact. Matchup knowledge is huge in this game, and top players have been traveling enough that those matchups are starting to be grinded out at a super high level of play. Top tiers are starting to assert their dominance...but I'm not worried *yet* about them running roughshot in the way Supes and BA used to over the entire cast.

Couldn't agree more.

From what i saw, the gameplay level of injustice is now on a different level, definitely not random as many people say.

I'm still thinking about the fact @Pig Of Hut had the macthes of his life, i could literally feel what you bit and tom were saying and how hard it was from pig, yet he cooled himself down and played extremely well doing what was necessary, one of my favourites injustice macthes.

Theo vs jupiter too among many others.
