What's new

MKX to take over tournaments nationwide.

I think MKX should just strive for relevancy when it's 2 years in its life cycle. It's not gonna be above the Capcom games but if it stays just behind those games then maybe the next installment or update could battle it out for the stop spot. It's all about building on what was left from prior games and MK has the stepping stones where it can get huge.

Aren't LOL tournaments done online? As in, nobody spends $1000 travelling to every single tournament in all the other countries.

Would be a lot easier to grow FG scenes if we didn't need offline play.

Don't know much about LoL, but there are a lot of SC2 online cups. None of them are considered as important as offline tough.

Online tournaments for prizes like money would definitely light a fire under people's asses if it comes in the released product. The prize money could be a accumulation of entry fees somehow.

Thatd be so sick, but I doubt itd happen for some reason.

I dislike people saying MKX looks nothing like MK9 with its new features.

That's probably one of the things I like about Boon. He never releases the same game twice.
Yes, the new features seem scary and out there, but I'm confident it will work and we will thank Boon for the new features which will make MKX a killer game.
I was scared at first, but I'm really really liking the look of MKX. I can't wait to compete since ill be done w school by then

@Zyphox

NRS and Ed Boon have been hinting HARD at an online mode that immerses everyone online in a tournament like setting of some kind (outside of ranked matches, player matches and KingOfTheHill).

Theyve yet to reveal details on it at all but you could tell they are foaming at the mouth waiting to say something about it already.

If NRS somehow get the casual crowd to enjoy the tournament scene itll be REVOLUTIONARY for American mainsteam specially. I seriously can't wait to see what it is and hope its as successful as they want it to be. It could mean so much not only for our scene, but got fighting games in general.

Even though Street Fighter and Marvel are clearly the most popular fighters in the fighting game scene, to casual American gamers Mortal Kombat is actually more popular. THATS the demographic they have to get excited to compete, the Call of Duty/bandwagan mainstrean.
Interesting post, perhaps im thinking of some kind of 'worldwide voting system' on say the match ups of the week or something like that.

Sidenote i really do hope more tournaments spawn all over cause I cant afford traveling all over the country and would be if my area nyc had more tourneys.

I'm not being pessimistic but I to some extent agree with @JDM but I'll take it a step further and say that the game is going to need "Hollywood" players. Look at killer instinct, no offense to that game or people who enjoy it but the reason it's showcased regardless of it's shitty entrance numbers, is that players like Justin Wong, Pr Balrog, Alex Valle , Chris G, floe,Filipino Champ and Maxamillian play and endorse that game! The fact is those guys draw viewership from your casual capcom fgc watcher because they knows those players. Without those players I could say with out a doubt KI would go the way of KOF where it's hype if you give it a chance but no one pays attention to it. If those guys stick with MKX I could see our game become the next marvel given our strong community with there endorsement. However I don't feel like we can beat SF. SF is like soccer growing in popularity in the states and huge world wide! They get everything marketed towards them! You don't see MK themed MadCatz sticks or a shirt company like broken tier making NRS themed shirts. The world Market knows SF and thus will continue to grow and dominate. What we can hope for as NRS is to be football huge in the states and trying to take our product global. As players we need to not be as critical of our game and endorse it too people. We cannot have a repeat of injustice. We have to be welcoming and not bash our product.

The number of people that stop playing because of patches is greatly inferior to the number of people who would drop the game if it wasn't patched.

That said, I agree MK will always be far behind Capcom games unless they somehow manage to get people overseas interested in MK. It can't be the number 1 game if there's no international interest/comp. It's just impossible.

Also the new Smash will probably have a much bigger community and following than MKX. Doesn't mean there's no hope though. Marvel players are bored and they see no future in MvC3. So MKX will still be a top 3 or top 4 game at tournaments like EVO. We just have to keep supporting it to make sure it stays a top 3 game for more than a year or two.
The patches severely hurt the hype in the beginning of the game's life.

see the remedy to both you and @JDM popints is tournament numbers and viewerships. if NRS advertised the game like Lol or DOTA that would be a huge step forward, now you start capturing attention to a lot of people. imagine what would happen if 500 people showed up fro MKX at an ECT or Civil war early in the games life? and when its on stream it gets 100,000 viewers, when capcom had under 20,000? this is exactly what happened to COD over Halo so dont ever tell me its not possible. i watched and inferior game take over Halo. i played in 2 MLG's and was sponsored even to fly out to colombus for Halo 3 (even though my team sucked lol) and i was 16 at the time there was no way i was taking a flight without one. when reach was released a lot of people left the game. pros stuck around, but it wasn't halo 2/3. then it died off completely, and bam COD came in now halo pros trying to play COD LOL. my point is, the only constant is change, something that can happen will happen. if the right moves are made pack it up capcom.

MK:X has huge potential worldwide, Injustice was more of a niche' audience, if MK9 brought as many players out worldwide as it did then MK:X has even more of a chance for numbers.

I know the UK is going to go in hard, I have absolutely no doubt the rest of Europe will too, Greece, Poland, France, Russia, Netherlands etc.

Getting more numbers than other games isn't as important as just having people play in general, IMO.
I think MKX is going to draw loads of new people in the UK is NRS get the game right. We should advertise the shit out of the UK scene when we get closer to launch date.

Can I help?
Sup Prime -- everyone can help; I think people have just gotten used to expecting things to happen on their own automatically rather than putting in the hard work to make community progress.

True growth is a grind and takes some pushing and cooperation, rather than people thinking that a new game is the answer to all prayers and will change everything.

People want a bigger house? Put in the work, build it!

MK is played internationally, you have the Greeks, English, Chileans, Angolans, Irish, Canadians, some Aussies, the Dutch, some Scandinavians, and some in the Middle East.

We just are bad at coordinating ourselves all as one.

Obviously USA is biggest, but tournament players outside of the USA could probably match the USAs numbers
It's not played nearly as much as Street Fighter or even Marvel, though.

See all that's cool but will NRS advertise on a global scale? we don't know if that's something that they will do! Also getting that many people to travel is highly unlikely. Look at the tournaments with the most Entrants for IGAU SCR, UFGT, NEC all 100 + events but still pales in comparison too marvel or SF. We can't even get numbers at an MLG or CEO two celebrated events! MKX Can get there but it's going to require NRS to step up huge and that's a big if. Lets be honest the FGC. Lives and dies with SF/capcom they do so much to support the fgc and the old garb won't let it go down easy. If capcom wanted they could GG the entire FGC by partnering with MLG. I'm not saying wave the white flag all I'm saying is let's try and keep pace and not repeat the mistakes of the past instead of focusing on we can overthrow SF and capcom

.... they mostly come at night. Mostly.
no way in hell .... these NRS games seems to build and have a life cycle of 2 years maximum straightforward regarding hype and interest competition progress and dedication , and grab interest only temporary , so MKX will work the same way as MK9 and IGAU : come out , brings competition value until the next IGAU 2 , and so on MK 11 be developed , and the cycle flow start and finish all over again ..... my bet it's this, but time will tell, let's see

NRS surely is a great developer and it games it's well more fun and quality wise than Capcom and Namco fg games, but, for some reason, it games (NRS) seems to depend of constant new releases to keep our small community interesting. Luckilly, Ed Boon it's a great person and seems to have great talent to catch what MK community need , so, while he became as NRS creative director, I think we will have good MK games coming from time to time ..... maybe each game better than it previous release

Except pre-patch Superman caused Evo to get boo'd

And post-patch NEC (when PPJ won) was easily one of the most hypest (if not the most) tournament of the entire game's lifespan.
Nah you don't get it. I'm not saying the patches hurt the gameplay or how fun it is to watch.

People pick up characters, characters get nerfed, they don't feel like learning their stuff over, they quit playing and go back to SF or their main game. Happens a lot. The game is wayyyy better now than it was day one, but the patches still made people drop the game in the early stages. No other fighting game company does this besides NRS and it's very off putting for the Capcom scene. I don't really mind it, but I know a lot of my hype was gone after they nerfed GL's vortex setups for no reason.

Really hope that MKX will have good netcode so it is possible to do online Tournament the one thing which helped Dota2/LoL and SC2 at the start of the game to keep people interested in the game without the need to travel. And also give Casuals a option to play in a competitive setting.
