2014 FIFA World Cup general discussion thread

France winning free. Honduras playing dirty. Salty much? Those crossbar shots were indeed a good sign after all.
They weren't aggressive all the way, partly because the ref inserted his authority early on. This is not a situation of "full retard" won't get your any sort of award. Honduras was defensive and somewhat aggressive. They are freaking out on their own tactical indecision.

Argentina's lineup looking solid! #ARG 11 vs #BIH | Romero, Zabaleta, Campagnaro, F. Fernandez, Garay, Rojo, Rodriguez, Mascherano, DI MARIA, Messi, Aguero.

The offense looks very strong indeed. But I stll have a lot of doubts about the defense. :/ Too bad this match is too late for me. I work tomorrow so I won't be able to watch it. :(

Argentina will be fine in the group stage. Afterwards their defense might be too shaky to prove worthy of moving on. But we will get a nice preview of whats to come tonight!

And right in front of the final four is a questionable midfield. I'm hoping Di Maria plays a central position like he did at Madrid, top notch work rate, incredibly dangerous on any sort of break, solid wing play. He might just be too much of a problem for opposition's midfield to deal with.

I think Argentina will be very suspect on counter attacks. They have 4 or 5 players in their starting line up who play high and can't recover, or those that get up and don't recover fast enough. Aguero, Messi, Di Maria, Mascherano, and Rodriguez. Now I'm not saying they NEVER come back and track on defense (God knows I've seen Messi and Di Maria do it a few times), but they will be likely to stay high and allow space in behind.
In short, I agree, the mid field could be problematic and allow gaps for other teams to challenge the defense.

Trust me, Di Maria will be all over the pitch, defensively and offensively.
I'm looking at the starting line up now, it's a 352 formation. It's very interesting, Juve did this formation justice. Italy used to played in this formation too. It's a decent solution for defensive problem on paper.

Edit - Counter for Argentina is unlikely now, it's most definitely possession based.
Edit again - nvm, Yahoo puts up the formation like it was 352, but 532 is a defensive variation.

Indeed, Messi will be causing massive headaches. Plus Aguero, hmm, tough. Even though Aguero's not in his best form, I doubt BiH can get a win out of this. Counter attack is the most feasible option, push for a draw. Open game against Argentina is too much of a risk imo.

Argentina vs Bosina & Herzegovina is about to kick off, exactly midnight my time, and even though I have to go to work tomorrow morning I'm staying up to support B&H in their World Cup debut. I'm sure many Croats will do the same.

Go Bosnia & Herzegovina! (I do like Argentina as well, so I'm very excited about the match)

Fun fact: Ibrahimovic's dad is Bosnian and was therefore eligible to play for the BIH national team.

Considering he obviously chose to play for Sweden because of their well known players in the early 2000s, he's going to be left with massive egg on his face if Bos/Herz make the quarter finals.

What an unfortunate goal. Otherwise, I'd say Bosnia was slightly better in the first half. Their defense needs to be a bit more careful though and not complicate as much.

Come on B&H, you can do it!

I'm not impressed by Argentina at all thus far, really hoping Bosnia-Herzegovina can pull off an upset win here :) Dzeko with two goals lets go!!

I'm glad Bosnia didn't mentally sink after that unfortunate goal and actually performed well afterwards. Argentina definitely not impressive, and hopefully Bosnia take advantage of it.

See what I mean about Argentina not playing as a team? They are lettingMessi do all the work. It doesn't matter how many good players they have.

Probably the blandest match all tournament so far honestly. Credit to Bos/Herz showing that they're not just Dzeko and a dream but ehhhh...

At least the crowd's trash talk between the Argies and Brazilian neutrals never gets old.

There you go. Too bad BiH cant capitalize on rubbish performance by Argentina, and the weather accelerates their weariness after that 1st half crazy pressure, hope is getting slimmer.
