The Top 10 Films of 2013 (and Biggest Disappointments)

Being a self proclaimed film buff I usually try to put out my list to friends and family every year, even if no one cares lol. I used to run a monthly film club via facebook when I had more free time and movie blog and I drove my film professor nuts talking about Lars VonTrier haha. Now at least I can still watch the films. Living close to NYC is always a plus because we have access to independent film releases. It's just so expensive! Now there are a lot of movies I have yet to see this past year but out of the ones I have seen, here is my list.

1. Her
2. The Wolf of Wall Street
3. Gravity
4. 12 Years a Slave
5. Short Term 12
6. The Worlds End
7. Captain Phillips
8. Before Midnight
9. The Act of Killing
10. Stoker

Biggest disappointments in No order

Elysium
Man of Steel
Oldboy remake
Kick Ass 2
Star Trek 2

Elysium and Kick Ass 2 were pretty big disappointments, I agree. I completely hate Superman, but I didn't completely hate the movie it was just OK... Her and Wolf of Wall Street were also two of my favorites. Did you not like American Hustle? I haven't seen it yet actually, but I am looking forward too. World's End was great, even though I thought it was the worst of the 3 Wright films. Did you see This is the End? I actually probably liked that movie enough to put it on my list. Overall I thought it was a below average year for movies IMO.

Didn't see American Hustle or maybe it would be up there haha. And I forgot about this is the end! I loved that movie!

Good:

Pacific Rim: a big surprise for me. Expected to enjoy it simply for mechs vs monsters but it turned out to be better than I imagined. It was no Citizen Kane, but at one point a mech uses a huge ship as a baseball bat on a monster so who the fuck cares?
Iron Man 3: a good return to form as I really didn't like Iron Man 2 as much as the first one.
Star Trek: Into Darkness: Very solid. I really don't care that it's now an action franchise because we've had 20 seasons and god-knows how many films of drama and I can just re-watch those.

Meh:

Elysium: felt rushed and could've done with another 30m+ to full explore the ideas. I loved the setup, but the execution was a bit ham-fisted and the Hollywood love story part needed to be nuked from orbit (they have a space station ready to do that). Give me some sci-fi that has the balls just to explore the ideas presented.
Man of Steel: Better than I expected, but it was still dull as fuck Superman.

WTF:

2 Guns: one of the worst films I've ever seen and didn't even get through the whole thing. Yes, Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington work well together on screen. The issue is that the plot was... what the fuck was the actual plot? It tried to be a cool double-crossing thriller without actually giving the audience a clue who was with who and doing what to begin with, introducing events, places and people expecting the audience to know who they are and throwing in random continuity changes just to try and be even cooler. I have never been so confused in a film and I've watched Memento when suffering from high fever (I failed, but 2 Guns was worse).

Also, bringing up a list of 2013 films has made me realise just how few I watched this year.

I usually only watch sci-fi movies so...

Disappointments:
Iron Man 3
Man of Steel
The Wolverine
World War Z
Pacific Rim
G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Man of Steel was okay, but I expected more from it. I felt like it lacked character development and was too focused on DBZ fighting, and the way Zod died was lame.

LBSH, were you really expecting much from Fast and Furious 6? I'm actually into cars and I still never thought any of the F&F series was anything more than "barely watchable" lol

I really liked a couple of the FF movies, I just couldn't get into the last one. Weird how some ppl say its the best one.

The only way Im ever watching another F&F movie is if KTP is doing a commentary track on one of the old ones lol.

But in all seriousness, I guess the first F&F was ok

But the rest were really bad IMO.

My favorite movie was definitely World War Z this year. My by far 2 biggest disappointments were Prisoners and Place Beyond The Pines. Place Beyond the Pines started off good, but once the movie said "15 years later" I hated it.
