Killer Instinct Patch Incoming says FilthieRich: General Fixes, Ranking System and more

Was MK9 ever seriously developed as a tourney game? I know NRS would say so (because saying "no our game is just for filthy casuals" is never good marketing) but MK9 really did seem like NRS wanting to make a homage to the classic MK games (1-Trilogy) and make it as fun as possible. And then panicked when certain things were horrifically unbalanced.

Injustice was a much better attempt at doing things right (balance-wise) from the start. Yes there have been some missteps, but unlike MK9 which got worse as the game went on Injustice is at it's best level of balance that it has ever been at.

2013 had majors won by Jax, Smoke and Johnny Cage. These characters and Kitana were more successful than some of those characters in a "6 character game".

Take a note NRS, there's no mention of "rebalancing." patches should be used to fix bugs and make the game better. I cant wait for this.

the game was patched 2 days after release to remove universal unbreakables w/use of instinct cancel. This patch removes more unbreakables and the unblockable crouching LK after an overhead into instinct cancel is blocked.

Those are 3 MAJOR changes that had/have a drastic effect on character balance. Example: Sabrewulf vs Glacius was not a bad mu in the day 1 version, but became one after Sabrewulf lost his big damage instinct cancel unbreakable.

This shows that even when a dev says "we wont patch early like other *cough* companies do, we will let things develop first", they will patch and patch the game at the first sign of something they don't like.

NRS did a good job with IGAU.
Read this and felt better

If you think the final version of MK9 is imbalanced, you should play vanilla. lol

Both games improved from patching, its just MK9 stopped being patched before it become well balanced. If MK9 had one big patch at the end of Oct 2011 like INJ did this October I wouldn't be surprised if it would have ended up with alot better balance. While its good now, INJ was very imbalanced before the last patch, IMO.

I would say vanilla MK9 vanilla balance had a lot more to do with bugs than "we think this is a good idea". Those super-high combos, constant resets, etc. Basically, Cyrax-level everywhere :). The final MK9 patch fixed most of those glitches (Smoke and Cyrax say hello) but most of the issues left with it are what tools characters have to win rather than big glaring mistakes.

Bad MUs are part of the game, why is it the AE players grind out bad mus and most of us just cry at the first sign of a possible 6-4?
1) The game mechanics of AE are entirely different
2) It's not "possible 6-4's" people complain about
3) You can't ignore the fact that Injustice is much more exciting now with a much more diverse field of tournament play; it's a night and day difference and it shows

4) A lot of the IGAU patches were to fix things that were never intended to be that way in the first place -- not just things people complained about. For example, what business did Vanilla Cyborg have in a "fighting game"? It was a clear error/oversight and it was fixed.

I like how you explained with details how a 6-4 MU on AE is any dif from a 6-4 in any other fighter....

I dont find Inj fun to play or watch at all, the game still feels stiff and weird to me.

footsies in KI are similar to footsies found in AE, which is why igau players are struggling and ae players or those with ae fundamentals are thriving at tournaments already. IMO of course. Footsies net you far greater opportunity in this game and is make or break.

There is a huge difference between character re-balancing and maintaining the integrity of game design and mechanics.

Killer Instinct is all about combo breakers and counter breakers. They don't want unbreakables to be a thing. I don't see where you're getting your panties in a bunch over this.

Cute, you think saberwulf loses to glacius. More cute, you're trying to keep your job with nrs by lying that they did a good job. There's a difference between removing glitch exploits and making x move -5 and y move +4 z move ±normalized. Whiteknighting a company that has proven time and time again to be incapable of developing a good game just makes you look silly.

I need more people to play KI against, and since people always come in to the drama,

ADD: JimmyPotato if you have KI and get games in!!! I like long sets of getting my ass kicked and trying to learn.

I also enjoy long walks on the beach and cold beer on sunny days.

The FGC in general are a bunch of babies when it comes to patching. It comes down to fear. People are afraid of change, they are afraid that if things get changed they won't be as good or that they will have to put in more work to be as good as they were prior and maybe just maybe they won't have what it takes. So this fear takes hold and people become irrational.

When push comes to shove developers patch in effort to make the game BETTER. That's the bottom line, they don't patch for the heck of it. Patching costs money and resources it makes no sense to patch for any other reason than to provide a better more enjoyable experience that will sell more copies. In the end we benefit from it which is why it's so ridiculous to have so much fear and be so adamantly opposed to the notion of patching.
