What can we learn from NEC?

With the results from NEC in an Pimpimjim taking the title, what does this mean?

"OMG HWKGRL WUN TOP TIER!!!!"

No, Pimpimjim won with a variety of characters. And, to a certain degree, he got pretty lucky. Which is not to demerit his win, but Grundy vs Hawkgirl is *shudder*. Tyrant played excellently, but was forced off his game almost entirely when fighting Jim's HG, having to chose Superman to try and take him down. And while Tyrant's Superman is no joke, it wasn't enough to take out PPJ.

PPJ has proven himself to be a colossal threat, combining his love of several unpopular and unusual characters(Lex, HG, Zatanna) with excellent fundamentals.

Just as important, however, was who WASN'T in top 8. There was only two Superman(Theo, Tyrant), one appearance by Black Adam(Forever King), one Aquaman(Theo) and no MMHs

"BLADAM N SUPRMAN DEAD!"

Again, no. The pools in this tournament were brutal, with many expected top 8 entrants losing either due to bad luck or surprise upsets. I personally was shocked and delighted when Snuggly Bear started taking names(I love me some Zod), but disappointed that neither Snuggly or Pig of the Hut was in top 8. Other casualties of pools included Krayzie, Revolver, Smarrgasm, and SonicBoomBrad, amoung others. There were alot of people who deserved top 8 at NEC, but for some reason or other fell short. The point being that BA and Supes players just happened to lose to equally skilled players

"NO MMH IN TOURNAMENTS"

Not getting into this one.

So what should we take away from this one? Is Raven underutilized? Are Aquaman, Zod, and MMH overhyped. Maybe, but with a top 8 consisting of a Raven, a Bane, a Grundy, and a Hawkgirl, two conclusions can be drawn.

1) It is not longer Black Adam and Superman's game only

2) People need to fear these 'lower tiers'

With the patch coming out, almost every character is a strong and viable contender, and many of them have very talented players backing them up. Black Adam and Superman will likely never disappear from the tournament scene for good reason, but they have to deal with some stiff competition from now on. Don't be shocked to see a Catwoman fighting a Lex in Losers finals, only to have to reset the bracket away from a Harley.

Congratulations PPJ, and to everyone who attended NEC. Don't get sleepy though! You're gonna have to grind those matchups very soon.......

there are alot of viable characters but there is also alot of matchup inexperience
also top tiers arent dead at all lol there were 2 supermans (one of which used aqua too) and 2 batmans in top 8
also for those that didnt already know pimpimjim is scary good, so is tyrant, and ducky is as good as (or better than) he/others say he is

To be fair, I think most of the HG is Top talk has been me and a few others fucking around. And if anyone wants to hype their characters, go ahead, but HG's been kind of dead lately so I'm breathing some life into the BirdCave.

And have tiers ever mattered that much? This isn't like Marvel where you won't be seeing Hsien-Ko taking Evo anytime soon. I wouldn't be that surprised if Joker took a major and I think we can all agree he's the worst in the cast

Seriously, it's the player, along with the balance injustice has. It isn't perfect, but you damn well would have never seen a Jade, kano, stryker, etc have this much success against other top players.

I learned that this game is actually hype, that it's pretty balanced, and I really hope people don't end up quitting

I don't think KF was represented very well, if at all this tournament. I could be wrong though. I didn't see any on stream.

Variety breeds hype. People like watching new things happen at tournaments. And contrary to what people may think, having a balanced game like this leads to tournament variety and thus leads to hype. Other games are hype for different reasons, like Marvel being over the top crazy and high octane or the intense chess like game SF seems to be. But right now, I think the balance is serving Injustice well

Don't get me wrong, she is a great character lol maybe around 12-13 in the tier list. But no way top 3/5/8 People forgets about her bat MU's lol. I'm pretty sure PPJ didn't have to play as Hawkgirl against any good Zod, Sinestro or Deathstroke

We learned that we basically need to rethink our matchup charts from the ground up. And hopefully this tournament will make people stop ignoring the massive human element in this game. Matches in Injustice are primarily player v. player, not character v. character.

I've said this before: Hawkgirl is a "meta-breaker" in that she is very good against some of the best characters in the game, but still isn't top tier herself because she has some "stinker" (Trademark AK Glass_Sword ) match-ups. And if you are unfamiliar with the HG match-up, forget about; You've already lost against a good one like Pimpimjim.

Admittedly, I think a lot of our MU charts miss a lot of key strategies that X character has against Y character because of some execution barrier. Like Catwoman vs Green Lantern(Cat Dodge) or Zod vs Black Adam(Jump back Zod Balls). Many people playing those matchups can't perform those high execution combos or approach the matchup from a weaker area(Side arm vs Black Adam) and then go online and give their incomplete view, and everyone else goes along with it since they can't really disagree since they don't know the answer either.

She's actually a lot like Scorpion: her strategy is so different than many other characters that her MUs are divided in the way you descibed. Either they can keep up with her and she loses, or they can't and she wins
