Why can't I play different characters?

Hey, all! I've been having some difficulties picking up any other characters in Injustice lately. When I first bought the game, I fell in love with Grundy's playstyle and I played him exclusively for a few months, only occasionally delving into other characters on a whim, and now I have a problem. It would seem I am completely unable to play any other characters, as much as I want to. I mean, I'm probably average at best with Grundy, and absolutely horrid with pretty much every other character I've tried. I try and play Lex and Bane and MMH and Shazam, and I just get the feeling that I've got no understanding of how the characters are meant to be used even though I've been playing them for a pretty lengthy amount of time.

So I turn to you, the knowledgeable beautiful people of TYM, with my question: What's wrong with me? Is it a character style issue? Do I just "absolutely suck" as Chael P. would say? What do you think I should do or try to remedy this situation?

Thanks for your opinions, and thank you all for reading :D

Well, do you like playing as Grundy? My friends, family, and I are almost all character loyalists in every game we play. We always pick a character before launch, and stick with them, and there's nothing wrong with that. Sometimes a character just "feels right," and there's really no need to go looking for another, as you'll always make your way back to your main.

If you're bored with Grundy or something, and just want to try a new character, it's probably just a style issue. Characters in Injustice are pretty unique and play very different from each other. I would recommend finding a character you like and treating them like you did with Grundy. Play them exclusively for a couple of weeks/months, and you should naturally fall into the rhythm with them. I'm no pro, but I'd guess that you just need to dedicate to a character in order to get the hang of him. Let Grundy go for a bit and focus completely on another.

What is your preferred fighting style? If you had to fight someone what powers do you wish you had?

Find a character with a similar style, or if you answer, we can tell you who fights like "that."

He does just feel right to me. I mean, sometimes I want to play another guy for a little while, but I've never just felt like I just "got" a character as much as I have Grundy. I'd like to find another character, but I'm almost just a little worried that I won't be able to connect with another one

I needed that, thank you! Sometimes it's just difficult when I'm getting flogged with other characters like I have been.

That's actually really interesting, because I guess I would say I'd pick super strength and durability so I could stand in the pocket and trade blows. Thank you, this is definitely something for me to think on.

having just one character is fine. dont put unnecessary pressure on yourself. just keep trying other characters and one will click with you. i tend to play 1 - 4 characters a game.

This sounds like a little like doomsday, he's pretty much always in the pocket, and has great tools to get in. He is durable with his trait, quite resilient, but his combo's aren't very strong. Also his d1 is considerably fast for a big guy.

Bane, who I play, is strong, in fact he has high damage and his armor is simply dominating up-close. This is not exactly going blow for blow, as you'll win if you trade with armor lol. However Bane has a harder time getting in than doomsday (don't get me wrong, he can still rush in quite well) and has slower strings, expect to do lots of armored specials to win.

On that note, no matter how much you want to be up close and trade blows, and no matter who you end up picking, there will be people who will prefer to zone you. So with that in mind, for your play style, you might as well pick a character who can get in fairly easily and play your style.

I appreciate the advice, I guess I'll just have to keep trying characters until I land on one that's a fit for me, maybe my true second character will just have to be a Grundy alt ;)

Your Bane is impressive :)

I'll have to look into picking him up. I was excited to play him for a while, but then Grundy happened. I'll definitely have to look back into him again after this.

i played kung lao for basically the entire first year of MK before i started experimenting and believe me it was a slow process. now i have KL, Noob Saibot, and to a lesser degree Kabal and Cyrax but they are just for fun to me.

Noob's saibot or noob saibot's?

Step one- pick new character to learn (WW)

Step two- Learn fastest normals, learn a "bread and butter" combo, learn a combo starting from a low and starting from a high. Basically, visit the character's forum on this website. (B113, 23, B3, J3, B113 DF1) (D12 BF2 MB, B113, 23, B3, ect.) (33, 23, B3, ect.)

Step three- Play with that character. Alot. Over time you internalize the combos and mobility, and pick up a few other tricks that you simply couldn't without understanding the character first. (Swag corner combos, frame traps, overhead crossups, OTGs, B2 shenanigans, ect.)

Also, you should play WW. I main both her and Grundy. She's a blast.

Spleens are overrated anyways....
When picking up or returning to a fighting game I usually just pick a handful of characters that look interesting on a base level (roughly 2-6 depending on the roster size). Then I learn the basic mechanics of the game, apply basic strategies I learn from these mechanic to each prospective character, and then gauge which characters are the most fun and/or seem to work the best for me (you could boil that down to a preferred splay style, but for me that varies based on the game).

This usually cuts my choices in half. I then take these 1-3 characters and practice them; making up my own strategies/combos/setups by spending a lot of time in training. I then play against either the computer or (more preferably) friends/family locally. Using this experience I either find my choices positive (ie winning consistently) or negative (the opposite) if the latter is overwhelmingly so, then I usually rethink my choices. Then I venture online to try out my characters.

After spending time online and off and getting alot of game time under my belt I seek out other tech for my character to both compare my own to as an affirmation that I'm playing the character right and to also add to my repertoire. After this point it's usually just a matter of taking the steps to learn the most about my character(s) and their options and matchups in order to incrementally better my game.

This is just my process, and though it is somewhat scientific and usually serves me well, sometimes the process can take a long-ass time. Like way back when SFIV first came out I originally played Viper, Fei and Cammy. Then when Super came out I played Fei and Ibuki. It took me until AE to figure out that I would have enjoyed playing as Vega all along; so now in AE I main Vega/Ibuki. So there is always the possibility that you can overlook a character too.

I also main grundy, i think the reason i cant drop him its that its kinda hard to get in, but once you do.. oh man you are IN, its beatiful to see that health bar melting.

I've always wanted to ask this question, but I figured I would get laughed at. >_> I guess I was wrong about that.

I started off with Catwoman and then eventually moved on to Doomsday. Now I cannot play as Catwoman at all. When I do, I'm like, "...the hell do I do?"

I sometimes feel like I'm incapable of knowing how to play more than one character. I guess I'll just have to be persistent like it's been suggested here and finding another character with a similar play style.

This is what I believe is happening juicepouch

Game comes out, you pick up Grundy. You mess around with the character. Check out his normals, frame data, specials etc.
So after messing with the character a little bit you start to play the game more against people now.

As you are playing people, you most likely developed a certain understanding of the game and a certain playstyle that goes hand in hand with your understanding of the game and its mechanics.

Now when you pick up another character, you learn this character's normals, frame data, specials etc.
Despite learning a new character, you are most likely stuck in the mindset of Grundy.
When situations happen and just in the general neutral game, the decisions you make are most likely still attached to how you play Grundy.

I think you are trapped in a Grundy mindset even if you pick up another character.

The best way to overcome this, is to development a new or better understanding of the game mechanics and each characters goals and main functions within those game mechanics.

Most likely picking a character with a similar playstyle will help you.
However, to be able to play a new character read what I just posted.

zaf, that is EXACTLY my issue since you mention it. When I tried playing Catwoman again after committing 100% to Doomsday, I find myself trying to still play like Doomsday. I guess it's the muscle memory?
