Awkward situation...wondering if you guys would have handled it differently

So just recently I kind of got put into an awkward situation, and I was looking to get a few POVs on it and see if I maybe should have handled it differently.

Me and this guy have been pretty good friends for about 6 years. We havent spoken too much recently but the other night I got a text from him saying him and his friend needed a ride to get some beer. Now I am not one to judge what other people do but the drive was like an hour round trip. He offered to pay me some money but I still wasnt really sold on the idea. It may sound crazy but I just didnt like the sound of me driving people to get beer. Anyway I made up some excuse about having other plans and told him I couldnt do it. I still felt kinda bad because he is a good friend.

So my question is, if you were in this situation would you have handled it differently? Should I have bitten the bullet and done it.

I would not take two hours out of my time to drive someone else go to get beer.

Yeah I did make one or two excuses before telling him I just straight up didnt want to do it. But I didnt want to seem like I was judging him or anything.

Now that I actually typed it out and thought about it it does sound ridiculous.
