What's a Smarrgasm?
Tonight, Atlanta hosted the 3rd installment of the weekly Atlanta Kombat Arena. The tournament and consequent level up sessions have now been moved to Friday to better accommodate the host and players with the school year upcoming.
This week would spell another powerful showing from the Atlanta faithful with 16 entrants vying for the title of Atlanta's best. Harold, last weeks winner, was unable to attend thus meaning a new champion would be crowned this week. Strong players such as Pig of the Hut, BYS Smarr, Reno Racks, Trepound, and Xenomorph (rounding out the top 5 seeds) were all chomping at the bit to grab the top spot.
The tournament began with two friends being unfortunately shuffled right next to one another in the bracket. The luck of the draw was not favorable for Ace Universe and Storm the Gates who are training partners from the Marietta area. Ace did not take it easy on Storm the Gates however and took a swift 3-0 victory with Doomsday to open up the tournament vs Storms newly minted Martian Manhunter. Things heated up with the next MU being a marquee clash between Reno Racks and Goomba. Reno using his deadly Batgirl and Batman combo fell victim to the power of the amazon with Goomba showing that Wonder Woman is a power to be reckoned with early on.
The nest match would have everyone in the room sitting on the edge of their seats and Im sure all of you at home were just as giddy if you know the Atlanta history. Glass Sword and Trepound were on a crash course from the second the bracket was made and after each of them winning their first matches, it was fated that they would clash. At the latest Battle and Brew, Glass Sword defeated Trepound for the first time in the history of FOREVER. Trepound was out to prove that it was just a minor slip up while Glass Sword was out to prove that it is his turn to provide dominance. The match began Raven vs Hawkgirl with each player being especially respective and each playing their own style of game. Tre tried to rush Glass down to the best of his ability but fell to the powerful defensive prowess of Glass Swords Raven that has become insanely good in such a short time. Glass Sword proved that the last victory was not a fluke taking the set 3-1.
Moving on, Omega Fedora Sword (he was in the zone) would have to play the mighty Pig of the Hut which is another opponent Glass Sword had yet to taste victory against. If there was ever a time for Glass to power on, it was now. Fortunes did not favor him as Pig showed the prowess of his impressive General Zod to stop the historic run by Glass Sword and take him to the bracket of alternative success. On the other side of the winners bracket, a newly found rivalry was about to play out for the 3rd straight tournament in Goomba vs Smarr. In the last two meetings each player had won tying up the overall tournament score. Each being supposed masters of their characters it was set to be an incredible brawl for a spot in winners finals. The set came down to a game 5 and some insane reads by Goomba clinched game 5 to push the dictator to the depths of the losers bracket.
Winners Finals would pit Goomba vs Zod of the Hut as he was showing that was all he desired to use. Pig began by showing off his quick and quirky new Zod pressure giving Goomba much trouble with the help of KT Smith's Ghost taking a couple games in quick succession. Goomba adjusted well and whipped up Zod in game 3 to break the set still wide open. Pig fired back with yet another good display of the General's power showing that he plans to "Always Win" and advanced his way into Grand Finals to await his future hopeful victim.
After moving on in the losers brackets we moved into the Top 4 of the tournament with a Loser's Semifinals match between the supercharged Glass Sword and the resurgant Smarr. Glass with his upstart Raven took it to Smarr from the get go scaring him but not enough to close it out. Smarr unleashed a flurry of pressure not known to his Black Adam on the norm to overwhelm Glass Sword and close out the set 3-1 and move himself into Loser's Finals and the Top 3.
With pig waiting in Grand Finals, everyone gathered around for the runback of one of the best sets to happen on the night. This would be the 4th time in three weeks now that Goomba and Smarr had met. Smarr got off to a better start this time around taking game 1 with some powerful defensive play and then powered through in game 2 as well showing that he was not in for the long 5 game set again. Goomba answered back immediately though with his own win making it seem just as any other set between the two. Game 4 would bring about the super competitive side in Smarr as he ran away like no other and at the end of the match put Goomba in probably the worst possible situation someone has seen by backing against the wall on Atlantis as well as having trait active. Some would say it was a coward move by Smarr, but it was the smart move in the end giving Goomba no chance and taking the set 3-1 and forcing his way right into Grand Finals vs Pig of the Hut.
The top 2 was set. The two players from the MK community born in Atlanta would meet for the second time in two weeks. Pig in the last 8 competitive matches was a stunning 8-0 vs Smarr (3-0 tourney, 5-0 in a challenge). Smarr was looking for some sweet revenge and also some bragging rights. Smarr would face a long road in a bracket reset but that seemed fine for him as it would give him time to redeem himself along the road. The set began with Pig sticking to his guns (literally) and Smarr picking his well-known Teth Adam that has become his trademark. Each was out to prove their point with Pig trying to show the relentless ability of Zod and Smarr out to show that his losses were not something to be expected. The stage was set (randomly of course as was enforced for the whole tournament) and it turned out to be The Asylum which is a personal favorite for Smarr.
The matches began with each player showing that the area around the TV's was not a place to be risky as each player took advantage of the premature throwing of each Vizio. The true fight then began with each player trading blows with the powerful tools their characters possessed. In the end of game 1, Smarr came out victorious breaking the mold that had become the fights between these two. Game 2 proved that Pig would not sit back and pig used even more of his brand new shenanigans to bring Black Adam to his knees and forcing Smarr to think even harder before advacing. The adjustment by Pig however forced one out of Smarr as he began to adapt his style more and more as the set became heated. Smarr would however prove too powerful finding his way to a 3-1 victory and a reset of the bracket. Pig took his time to mull over his options possibly thinking of falling back on his trusty Sinestro to switch it up. He decided to stick to Zod for one more game but it seemed futile as Smarr seemed to have a bead on Pig's Zod and Smarr continued his run of wins by taking out Zod for the 3rd straight game. Pig's hand was forced and Sinestro was the next card to be played as Game 2 began. Smarr has seemed to have trouble with this very Sinestro in the past and it showed in Game 2 as Pig got trait early and showed his power to even up the set at 1-1. In game 3, Pig seemed to be on the trail to victory as the fear was instilled in Black Adam. It seemed as though Pig was ready to put a stranglehold on the tournament when at the very last second Smarr landed a hit that would take game 3 and put him on the edge of winning it all. Game 4 came around with Pig seeming slightly shook as Smarr finally got back under the skin of Sinestro after 9 matches without tasting victory. The Hall of Justice played stage to the final bout as Black Adam powered on showing no more signs of fear to take the tournament 3-1 in the bracket reset.
This marks the 3rd tournament victory for BYS Smarr thus far in Injustice (BNB 2 Time Champion). Smarr also noted that he will not taste 100% true victory until the return of AK Harold who will for now be considered co-champion of Atlanta since he was unable to attend this week's tournament. That about wraps it up for this one as Smarr proves that this is still a world of dictators in Atlanta for the time being.
