Making the compatibility patches mandatory...

How's my volume?
I'm sure most of you know this by now, and are frustrated by it, but in case you didn't know, if you have Skarlet or the UMK3 skins, and your opponent doesn't, and also did not get the compatibility pack, you cannot use Skarlet or those particular costumes against them online. This made me (and others) question why the compatibility patch wasn't mandatory so we wouldn't have to go through this. Well, I sent a message to Paulo Garcia yesterday (known as "colt" here) asking him to convince the team to make the patch mandatory. Well it turns out, of course, that it isn't quite that simple. He wants to, but it's not in the team's hands at the moment.

Here is his exact response, and by the way, thanks very much for the response:

Not solely a MK team decision or at all. It isn't that big of a deal on PS3 but for Xbox more has to be done with MS. There are a lot of Xboxs out there (arcade units, core consoles, & ones with just bad or full small harddrives) where making the comp packs mandatory would make them not be able to play online at all. Just with the first 4 dlc characters we are making it would make the game now require a few hundred megs off free harddrive space.

It's been brought up multiple times by me and others that the majority shouldn't be inconvenienced by a minority of users.

Your best bet would be to make yourselves heard by writing in the WB and MS.
So you heard the man, we've got to let them know, but please, try not to be rude about it. Messages, letters, twitter, heck even a facebook page dedicated to this would help out.

It is indeed a frustation with all the desyncs, lost sessions etc. especially when most people don't seem to be aware of what is causing it. I was amazed that during the log-on when 'searching for updates' it didn't detect the compatibility pack and yet it did for the classic skin pack. Strange...

I'd be happy to voice my concerns/sugestions in a polite and hopefully helpful way, just tell me where to aim. :)

I believe Valve ran into similar problems with TF2 for Xbox 360. Valve wanted to continuously update the Xbox 360 version so it would have the same updates that the PC version got, but due to Microsoft's rules, they couldn't do that. It's the same reason why the PS3 version of Portal 2 is better supported than the Xbox 360 version.

It's sad that we have to put up with this bullcrap because Microsoft came up with these stupid rules on DLC and patches due to the 10% of Xbox 360 owners that don't have hard drives (most of which are casual gamers who wouldn't play much online anyways). I still don't see why we can't have a good version on PS3 with mandatory patches, other than laziness on NRS's part to create two different versions of patches for the two systems.

So why not make the PS3 version mandatory, since it isn't that big of a deal? Are they concerned about more PS3 "favoritism" backlash? I'm not buying the other characters unless they make the comp packs mandatory. I don't like to say that, as I want to support NRS and I'm interested in both the remaining known DLC characters and will likely be interested in the mystery character; but selling them in a way that allows other people to decide when I'm allowed to use what I paid for is a shit deal, regardless of the reason behind it.

I agree 100%. If the PS3 compatibility packs aren't mandatory, I'm not throwing away any more money on DLC characters that I can't use half the time.

Just because Microsoft has stupid rules on patches/DLC doesn't mean PS3 users have to suffer as well. It sounds like all these desync and incompatible DLC characters can be avoided on PS3, and having one version with a solid online experience is better than having universal crappy online play.

Yea, I agree this shit is annoying. I played a guy the other day who had no dlc at all, no Skarlet or costumes or anything. I almost dropped out of the match cuz it annoyed me. I'm a type of player who likes to style with my classic Reptile. I couldn't even do that:(

Wow. I figured it was something like this, but the fact that its like that on PS3 because 360's didn't ship with hard-drives is ridiculous. Conspiracy!

They are having the same negotiation problems with Blueside about Kingdom under fire 2. Its gotten to the point where kuf2 may not even be released on the 360 due to them not being able to update weekly.

So who do the PS3 users write to at WB? The logic doesn't make sense at all for PS3. Whats the story there?
