Post-Evo 2013 thoughts on Injustice

LET IT BE KNOWN THAT I DID NOT GO TO EVO 2013, I WATCHED FROM HOME.

I really like Injustice. I never was much of a DC Comic fan, I was all about Marvel, but I like the concept of using Flash or Batman to beat the hell out of Superman. This year was the very first Evo that Injustice was at, and boy was I excited!

To start Evo 2013, on Friday, MK9 was on and it made me remember how much I loved the game. It was extremely exciting and DJT took it all...needless to say I jumped out of my seat from excitement. His Cyrax was on point and it was a beautiful match-up.

Saturday was the pools, then Sunday was the top 8 for KOF XIII, Melee, Injustice, UMVC3, and AE. For the Grand Finals of KOF, the guy reset the loser's bracket and took the whole thing! It was amazing and I got extremely hype. Melee is always amazing to watch and I think everyone LOVED watching it. UMVC3 came on after Injustice and MY GOD IT WAS SO MUCH FUN. I could watch it for forever, probably. Same with AE!! It was incredibly fun to watch.

Let me get back to Injustice before I get too sidetracked. Injustice was after Melee and it began with a classic Batman vs Superman match-up. Superman won...it was a boring match. As the Top 8 progressed, I noticed how much I wasn't enjoying it. I watched the whole thing and found myself only watching the Grand Finals because I didn't want to miss the Killer Instinct demonstration. I think it was obvious to everyone that KDZ was going to win, it was neat seeing a Green Lantern in the Grand Finals but we all knew it wasn't going to happen for DJT. Superman is too strong....so much stronger than all of the rest of the characters, it seems. Basically what I'm trying to say is that Injustice bore me to death. I didn't get hype, I didn't get excited, I didn't even want to watch the Grand Finals...I just wanted to watch the KI demonstration then watch UMVC3, I didn't even really like UMVC3 too much until I decided to watch it.

This Evo really showed me how much better all other fighting games are vs Injustice. MK9 is better, too. Usually, I jump down people's throats for being negative about the game, but we have to be realists as gamers. Maybe it was the commentators, Superdave and Delriach was incredibly boring to hear, they didn't even sound into it...hell, they didn't even ACT like it. The honest opinion is that Injustice is just not as good as UMVC3, MK9, KOF XIII, AE, and all other (except dumbass Skullgirls) fighting games...it looks sporadic and inconsistent. Maybe I'm just losing my mind, but Injustice at Evo 2013 was a snoozefest. I'll patiently wait for Killer Instinct and play UMVC3.

First of all the game is still new, all those other games have been played for years now. I first considered MK9 to be boring to watch, but after people got better it became really interesting, I expect the same for Injustice.

That's not an excuse. I loved MK9 since it came out, the very first Evo that MK9 was at was a blast to watch.

I guess it's a matter of taste then. I liked CEO Injustice much more than first EVO MK9. But EVO Injustice was a pretty big letdown.

About the "only being out 3 months", why did I get more excited watching Killer Instinct (game's not even out yet) than Injustice? lol js

Perhaps you like hearing combo breaker every 5 seconds. Honestly, I couldn't find it interesting at all, was just waiting for UMVC3 top 8.

I am still holding out judgment as far as the future of Injustice goes. I joke around at the game's expense all the time, but I still give it the BOTD since it is still new.

That being said, I agree completely with your post. When Injustice Top 8 rolled around, I was STILL on that high I felt after watching MK's Top 8, and I kept thinking "man, MK was so good this year." (I even went back to watch the GF in the archives during one of the matches :D).

However, I disagree that this game is 100% boring. It has potential, it really does. It seems like every match Chris G's Green Arrow is in ends up being extremely exciting. It's just those top characters that everyone plays are boring right now; Superman with his lasers, Killer Frost with slides, Black Adam with divekick/back dash. MK's top tier is SO flashy. Kabal's NDC-pressure is crazy to watch (not to mention "HEY! HEY HEY!), Cyrax's resets are still hype, Kenshi is exciting to watch in a different way (when he whiffs a damn spirit charge and eats a combo I know I get excited), etc.

The two sides are pretty much "Ugh, this superman laser spam is BORING" and "chill, the game's still new," and both are true.

Honestly I thought the Injustice top 8 was pretty boring aside from KDZ. Mostly because it was kind of obvious that this wasn't the high level play we were looking for yet. I mean the game is only 3 months old and not many people are giving some of the top dogs reasons to level up their game because they are still getting away with everything they did since the start of the game.

Once we start seeing some high level Flash play, the character specialists who have been grinding out the game, etc. I think we'll really see what this game has to offer. I mean comparing it to MK9 makes no sense because that game had 2 years to develop. Do you guys remember the PDP Tournament? It was absolutely pathetic seeing JWong, floe and LI Joe take it so free.

Man, that PDP tournament was so embarrassing for MK9. Ugh.

Lack of character diversity and lack of new tech and lack of hype high level stuff made injustice's top 8 so boring that I decided to watch Smallville rather than watch the stream.

Worth it for that sexy bald lex.

The game's still new but for it's first year at evo I was kinda disappointed. We got what like 4 patches already and there are still problems with the game. And it's not just the game, it's the community as well. Not trying to sound like an Injustice hater, I just hope it does better next year and in future tournaments.

how was pdp embarrassing for mk9? because good fighting game players took the top placings? i guess they should have made the game a random mashfest so good players cant win, thatd be a lot better

People keep implying that that this game will drastically change in the future, but from a spectator POV, I doubt it because of Killer Frost, Black Adam, and Superman.

Look, these characters are not broken. However, they are, arguably, the best in the game, and incredibly one-dimensional (<-- key issue imo). And unlike Kabal or Sonya, they are VERY easy to learn and perform well with. Not even Kenshi had this pitiful learning curve. So why aren't there more Nightwings, Flash players, Wonder Womans, or Ravens? Simple. Because why should a top player invest time on characters with stricter learning curves when they can pick up BETTER characters that are ridiculously easy to pick up and place high with.

No matter what new tech is learned, these characters will always be hype killers because of how they work and how effective they are. That is my honest opinion.

It was a lot like Injustice at EVO actually.

The pool play was interesting and you saw a moderate amount of diversity and interesting new things, though lots of KL and KL mirrors.
Then top 8 came around and it was just hype deflating.

I think the worst moment was when LI joe and PL were fighting, and LI joe switched from either Ermac or Cyrax to KL and mirror matched PL, and actually beat him.

Jwong 100% deserved to win that tournament, he was the best player their.

Yeah, but Evo2012 was kind of a let down for mk.

Injustice wasn't hype this a Evo because, as you said, people "knew" KDZ / a Superman was going to win. In the end though, NOBODY was ready for KDZ's Superman, and that is just the bottom line.

Another thing is, if DJT could beat Kabal the way he did in GF for MK9, he definitely has the skill and ability to beat Supes at high level, but Supes' damage is retardedly OP, and KDZ played extremely well to boot. DJT just got beat...and it sucked.

There's two 2 funny things about that matchup - LI Joe was punishing low hat with Cyrax's standing 1.. and he started the whole 2,4 low hat vendetta against him.

And yet PL was the one who got shit for it at EVO 2011 lol.

Guess you could say that was not unlike KDZ's performance in that regard. People give Superman a lot of grief but it wasn't a random Superman player taking it. It was the best. And while he did have some tough matches against DJT he still edged out his competition.

The thing is I'm a huge fan of Denzell's after this weekend and I was actually pleasantly surprised with just how good of a player he is. I'm new to this community Injustice being the first FG I've actually picked up and now retroactively learning MK because I was pissed I missed it back when It launched, I was surprised to see he's such a big contender among the plethora of other well known names

If my opinion weighs any less because of that, that's fine by me. But I will not believe even for a second that it was only the character that won this Evo. Make of that what you will
