What's new

What criteria did you base your main character choice on?

1. They must not be S tier.
2. They must not be male ninjas.
3. They must not be too popular or too overrused.
4. They have to look cool.
5. They must have personality.
6. They must have interesting special moves.
7. Having good footsies and decent low/overhead are a + but not a must have.

My mains: Stryker, Baraka and Mileena :)

edit: My favs have always been Nightwolf and Kano since UMK3. But I dropped them because they feel retarded easy mode in this game lol. Oh, and Reptile is the only ninja I like to use.

Not to popular and not to cheap.
Using Kabal, glad they are removing the infinite because it made him both cheap and popular :p

I think you should try Kano. Got come circle motion action which you probably are familiar with, good and now safe rushdown options. Very good zoneing game if you need to. Throwing knives Seagal Style

How's my volume?
My mains: Johnny Cage, Mileena, Jade, and Smoke. How I chose them:
Johnny: He was my main back in MK1 so he was a must have. I really like the rushdown aspect as well.
Mileena: She was my main back in MK2 so she was also required.
Jade: I had to have her as a main when I saw her X-Ray... yeah.
Smoke: He looked easy to use so I chose him to take some of the burden of learning a complex character, and I really like the hair. (you could say I could have just stuck to 3 mains then, but I wanted more options (counter-picking and all)).

I'm eventually going to add Shang to the team but that'll be a long time from now. Once I get a good understanding of everyone so I can take advantage of Soul Steal against any opponent (the damage boost is great incentive).

So all in all my criterias were shallow and nostalgia-fueled and I'll stick by it forever.

I have rerollitis. I will pick someone, love them to death and a week later after I learned all the combos and whatnot, will find a weakness in said character and switch off. After a while I'll have gone through 4-6 characters. Then I narrow it down between who is best, and who is most fun.

Then I make my main whoever is most fun, since I have a greater chance of sticking to it even when I lose as expected. The other toon is my crutch second :p

To pick them out for a game I usually play story mode, and then conveniently challenge tower was there to force me to play all of them.

I'm already predisposed to Sub-Zero and Smoke simply because of their coolness factor and personality. And then Cage to me was just a stuck-up jerk in the story, and it makes victories so much sweeter when I win with him. :p
For playstyle, it is usually hit hard and fast with my characters, and even though Sub-Zero is a zoning character (kind-of) I can still bring the pain when I have an opening. Smoke has various combo starters which catch people off-guard and his zoning/anti-zoning tools are amazing, in some combos, I bring characters full screen away, back toward me and then send them away again. Cage is very involved, as in if you lay off his pressure, a good player will take advantage and will kill you; I play as him because I like being more involved in the fighting game rather than waiting it out.

Hope this helps. :)

I like midscreen zoning, speed, rushdown, flashy juggles, and non popular characters, cool costumes, juggles. I don't like cheap characters or picking based of tiers ie Raiden, Kung lao etc.

Jade, Liu Kang, Smoke, Kitana are my mains. Jade I like to sit mid range or get in close and mix up some combos easy juggles. If I get rushed down I start wake up ex glow and catching people off guard. Liu Kang I like his combo mix ups once he is in close there is no excuse for not getting a 30+% damage combo, easy to force someone into the corner. Smoke, shake, teleport punch, low throw leads to otg, destroys people who want to sit and full screen zone or teleport all day. Kitana is high damage character without even getting in close, builds meter fast with fans, controls air space, a lot of unbreakerable combos due to fans and fan lifts.

I picked up Smoke and Kabal as my mains in this one. I was always a fan of the male ninjas as a kid (ninjas, always cool), and when I played on UMK3, I loved playing both Robo Smoke and Human Smoke. As for Kabal, I'm not sure why I picked him.

So, pure aesthetics apparently guided my choices, and the gameplay with both has paid off well.

My mains need to fulfil 3 different things:

1. They have to look cool.
2. They need to have a cool look and useful combos and special moves.
3. They need to have different playstyles.

So my mains are: Jade, Sindel and Sonya.

Jade:
I like her oriental appearance and her staff reminds me of Star Wars somehow. :)
She is a cross between Sonya and Sindel, she is able to rushdown a bit with Boomerang reset combos and she can also zone with low, high and air Boomerangs or keep the distance with the Staff Grab and Shadow Kicks. Many of her moves are slow, so she is best at mid range. But her best move by far is Shadow Glow. She is like Zangief then for a few seconds, immune to hit stun. :D

Sindel:
Her gothic look is cool and she is kinda beautiful. :)
She is a heavy zoner, low, high and air fireballs. Hair Whip and Step Up overhead moves help greatly to keep the enemy at bay.
She is a really good choice when I have problems against characters like Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero is really good against rushdown characters like Sonya, he can easily protect himself with ice clones and lame it out.
But Sindel can be really good against characters like that. Especially her low fireball is perfect against Sub.
She has the weakest combos out of my three main characters, but she is the best keep away character.

Sonya:
And finally Sonya, the rushdown military chick. :p
She relies on big combos and tactics to keep the enemy in the corner.
It's a nice variety to the other characters.
She is the "in your face" character. :)
And I really like her second outfit.

@ Organelle.

If you enjoy playing as Akuma in SF or Marvel then I think you should try out Smoke. He has no air fireballs like Akuma, but he has many similarities like the teleport.

Dulllyanna

You're going to shoot guns at me?
Stupid, easy, and/or fun characters: Kano, Smoke and Noob so far. Also fuck choosing characters based on popularity or lack thereof.

For me, it's based on who's cool and if they have the potential to play in a way that works for me. I prefer to try characters and find my own playstyle with them over just imitating others.

I think of Kitana as my main, i tried her, realized that she had the tools to play from any distance and that she has great combo potential (cool ones too). Other characters i use or am willing to use though i may suck with them are the top row characters on the select screen and i guess Sonya is my "main alt", i see alot of potential in her offense, having good juggles, a good reset and good options after the reset. I also like Sonyas pornstar/campleader outfit though i can barely stand her regular one.

@Dullyanna Wow.. Is your sig an actual quote?

Since UMK3 I used to love cyrax and noob. Somehow I tried both and I didnt really enjoyed playing with noob but cyrax just felt right and I am quite nasty with him. I also want to learn ermac cause I got bored with cyrax.

Altsa

My mains are Sektor, Kitana and Quan Chi.

I like characters with high damage mid-screen combo potential without repeating the same string over and over again in a combo. I also dont like using the most popular characters. Also nice x-rays and fatalities are bonus.

We have the same disease my brother lol. But I started with Sub and always did, since MK1. Love Kung Lao too, BEFORE he was godlike, now with the hotfix I like him even more because I think this is about where he should've been in the first place. DECENT damage with huge safety, best AA and good tools. His damage is good for how ungodly safe he is...for the most part. They nerfed Sub's damage so I had to move him to the "sub" spot, no pun intended (see sig lol), and have picked up Lao as my main. Besides...His hat is friggin' sweet! (Wish I had one.)

"Online is your forte!" - A Wise Man, 2015.
The reason I start to play any character is exclusively because of their gameplay. I want to play a character that makes me feel free. A character that makes me able to use any strategy I want. Characters that forces ME to adapt to THEIR gameplay style are the ones I hate the most (I'm talking about you Zangief, Sheeva and Juggernaut). If I wanted to ride a huge, retarded, slow and stupid tank, I'd join the army. LOL

I like to play the pressure game. I keep myself always close to the opponent, even when they are down. It sometimes makes me fail badly, but that's just how I play. Every strategy has its flaws, right? :p

That being said, the character that comes closer to my style of playing is Sonya. She's very fast, has a lot of safe moves and has some great combos. A REALLY like how she fights. "Pressure" should be her alias. xD
Johnny Cage has also surprised me, and is 2nd on command. But the greatest problem is that once far, I have some hard times getting close to the opponent.

I must say also that I don't may always the same character in MK games. Everything depends on it's speed. My main in MKA is Liu Kang, while in MKvsDCU is Sonya, and was such a surprise to me that she came even better in this new game!

RWDY Nori

Where is crossplay?
Raiden reminded me of those guys in wicker hats from the movie Big Trouble in Little China
That's actually where the creators got the idea from, they admitted it:)

I love zoning chars that can get people off them if need be. For MK, I have always liked Shang ever since MK2

speed zoning damage options ala reptile
I wish I had the classic reptile costume, haha. His defaults are so lame imho.

Not to popular and not to cheap.

Yeah right now Kano is looking like he is a legit contender for being my main, along with Shang Tsung and Reptile from what folks are saying.

Haha, that sounds exactly like what I am going through right now. Which is why I resorted to joining TYM just to see if you guys had some insight as to who I may enjoy most based on my character choices in other games ;D. The decision was getting too hard on my own.

Sure did. Your description actually made smoke sound appealing. Sub is typically a zoner, and I guess you don't play him that way. But smoke I could never really get a read on and you made him sound like a zoner/mix up which I tend to like. So I will have to give him another try too.

@ Organelle.

Yeah, he does sound similar after reading subzerosmokerai's post as well. Looks like the narrowed down roster is going to be kano, shang tsung, reptile (if I can find an alternate costume dlc code), and smoke.

Edit: Sorry for all the edits, that is the only way I have figured out to string multiple quotes so far ...

But I wanted to say thanks for all the help so far guys.

I got a lot of backing on kano, shang, reptile, and smoke so far ...

I was wondering what some of your thoughts on noob, ermac, cyrax, sektor, and scorpion. Personally, noob seems intriguing to me. He reminds me of ryu for some reason. I may have to add him to the narrowed down list too. Any more feedback I can get would be awesome though. This has helped me trim about 10 characters, so I am feeling better about being close to picking a main, haha.

I honestly only picked Kano at first because I like to play Blanka in SF2. He really doesn't play much like Blanka though.

how i picked my main:

which character is the most like guile?

so i use kano in mk9.

by coincidence, i used kano in mk1 the very first time i played the game back in the day.

I would say Shang Tsung, Ermac or Reptile for you... based on your comments.
I feel similarly now after reading everyones comments, but I am not sure why ermac is getting so many more votes then noob. Noob seems kind of like a loose mk ryu.

MKF30

Fujin and Ermac for MK 11
Aside from being badass, I choose my characters based on great turtling and zoning, ability to play mind games and coolness

Which is why I use Ermac(one of the best turtlers in the game and range fighter), Scorp(great overall game far, close mid etc), Smoke(great zoning game) and Sektor(is just fun to use)

How does noob stack up against ermac?

DaiHuu

Nightwolf Mourner
Male character with long hair- No joke
I grew up on Inuyasha as a little boy, so that grew to who I play today. I use to sub Shang tsung, and my full time main is Nightwolf
In other games I played:
Hazama
Zangief (I liked the grappling style)
Adon
Wolf (Virtual fighter)
Yun
Remy
