I see that my conversation has now taken up multiple pages, so this will be my last input on the matter to allow other issues brought up and focused on, as my focus and interests are admittedly rather singular.

Since it seems to me that this is the most viewed thread we've had on the site in at least a couple years I'd like a couple things known:

A) Anyone who has a question in relation to firearms or legislation can feel free to reach out to me anytime. I have extensive experience and if I can't answer it personally I'll direct you to the proper resources.
B) I recommend EVERYONE take a CHL or LTC class regardless of intent to carry or even own a firearm. With this will come a good understanding of your respective state's current laws as well as many generally helpful concepts such as situational awareness.
C) I respect everyone whose conversed with me on the subject, and am always willing to have further discussion. Furthermore, I hope everyone here has been well in the face of Covid and give my thoughts to anyone impacted by the storms hitting us on the Gulf.

The opinions I've voiced in this thread are my own and not necessarily reflective of establishments in which I've conducted pawnbroker and FFL services.

Now back to lurking....
You are a gentleman, and this is respectable..

I won. You lost. You know it.
Of course you don't care about optics; because you know you've lost the argument, and it has nothing to do with everyone else's ideology.
I fail to understand why the two of you have to convince yourselves that you won the argument in a thread in which 90% of people agree with everything you post.

I am a democratic socialist. Proud of it. Never said I wasn't.
What a surprise! I would have never guessed.

Also, I do not reply to every socialist talking point because doing so would be a full-time job. I try to acknowledge everyone's post by addressing the primary argument in a concisely.

  1. You dismiss Black Lives Matter as Marxist, thereby implying they are illegitimate, simply because a couple of its founders identify with it. Yet, you completely ignore the thousands of other people, most of whom are not Marxists, who molded the message into an idea that African Americans are disproportionately abused and mistreated in this country, always have been, and that something needs to be done about it.
I dismiss Marxism, which, by the way, certain individuals have defended in this thread, in the same manner that I dismiss White nationalism. People ought to dismiss the extremes of the political spectrum. If a conservative movement were linked to White nationalists, even if the cause of the movement were somehow benign, people like you would dismiss the movement immediately and rightfully so. You give the Marxist Black Lives Matter co-founders a pass because you largely agree with their radical positions.

Feel like there needs to be an added context that those with Marxist-based politics have nowhere even close to the amount of political power that white nationalists have and are at no point going to be a majority in any way. A consistent effort from the US political mainstream since the 1950's has done so much to demonize the very concept of left-based politics and chase them out of power that the idea that it is still this bogeyman to gullible goofs like Dave is laughable.

I don't have to convince myself of anything. I keep giving you the means to take the momentum, win the debate, and explain to me why it is you're so determined to make literally everything about identity and labels while at the same time condemning me with misplaced identity and labels, and you keep going in circles and repeatedly slamming the liberal button no matter how many times and how many ways I disassociate myself. It wouldn't matter to me if there was no one in this particular branch of the debate but you and me; I would still be in the lead.
Hell, if you really ever wanted to hash it out, @CrimsonShadow or someone could host a debate and we could have it there. Away from the boards and everyone else and all the other opinions that delude the facts, with actual voices and words and tones and the like. Any time. I would welcome the opportunity to have an actual intellectual conversation with you about all of this. Because it isn't lost upon me how where you came from and got away from has shaped your world view and beliefs, just like the old life I got away from shapes mine. Doubt it will ever happen, but it would be fire, and better than any debate we'll see come out Washington any time soon.

I LOVE this idea of an actual TYM debate more than I care to admit. Give a way more human insight into the perspectives being given than is possible in text alone.

look at bernie. he can say as many true things as he wants, but as soon as someone shouts "communist", hes done.

So teenager shoots 3 people and walks pass cops armed with an assault rifle. This is surreal to me, if you told me this a few days ago I would have said that shit only happens in movies or shitty power fantasy daydreams.

Historically, you are correct yet not most recently. I will quote Wikipedia as the authors proffer more data than I ever could.

"According to Gallup, socialism has gained popularity within the Democratic Party. As of 2018, 57% of Democratic-leaning respondents viewed socialism positively as opposed to 53% in 2016. The perception of capitalism among Democratic-leaning voters has also seen a decline since the 2016 presidential election from 56% to 47%. 16% of Republican-leaning voters and 37% of American adults overall had a positive view of socialism in the 2018 poll, compared with 71% and 56% holding a positive view of capitalism, respectively. A 2019 Harris Poll found that socialism is more popular with women than men, with 55% of women between the ages of 18 and 54 preferring to live in a socialist society. A majority of men surveyed in the poll chose capitalism over socialism. A 2019 YouGov poll showed that 70% of millennials would vote for a socialist presidential candidate, and more than 30% think highly of communism.

On April 2, 2019, four members of the DSA won run-off elections in Chicago while two others retained or won their seat in the February election, bringing the total number to six socialists on the council. Socialists control twelve percent of Chicago's city council power which Jacobin managing editor Micah Uetricht states in The Guardian that it is further evidence of a "socialist surge" in the United States and "the largest socialist electoral victory in modern American history
."

In other words, socialism has been gradually growing in popularity in America, particularly among Democratic-leaning voters, millennials, and women. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is arguably the best representation of this growth.

Do I believe the Fox News narrative that socialists are masquerading as tyrants in an attempt to supplant democracy and abolish the Constitution? Of course not. I lived in socialist countries one third of my life. I think politicians like AOC and Bernie Sanders genuinely want what is best for Americans. The problem, in my opinion, is that their utopian policies would prove to be nonfunctional in America. Besides, there already is a system in place that has raised millions of people out of poverty. The system is called capitalism, which does need improvements and adjustments as the human experience continues to be, but it does not need to be disintegrated. This fundamental difference is what separates you and the other socialists from me.

When voter perception translates into substantive action I'd like to know. When both political parties' highest echelons of power are squarely against a concept, it's hard to imagine voter polls meaning much

If it was fun topics like gaming I'd be down but anything serious, nobody on here for the most part could handle a serious debate without it quickly devolving in to ad hom, well poisoning, and straw man.

I suppose it would come down to the format, as in theory that could be solved by having a half-decent moderator. The structure of the discussion would need to be semi-formal in order for that to work. Also, I feel like anyone here who would actually take the time out of their day to participate in such a thing would naturally be less inclined to be so counter-productive as well.

Yeah I definitely don't think that haha, if it's something they're very opinionated on.... well look at this thread.

More video game centric stuff like what the site is actually for, NRS games, their characters, players, the FGC and fighting games in general, other genres of gaming, or even other stuff I think would be better.

You guys should really be focusing on the 2024 election because democrats are leaving their party in droves to vote for Trump. Turns out most americans don't believe in rioting, looting, and kneeling during the national anthem when all they want to do is watch their sports without all the political nonsense.

I think the only way Biden can win is if the demon-crat party steals the election or if they follow Hillary Clinton's advice and don't concede the election under any circumstances, you know, similar to what she accused Trump of doing, but now she sees no problem with it. Hypocrite much?? Come on Blair, lets go. These people can't handle sanity and truth.

Thanks for conceding man! I really appreciate it!

The very fact that you state simple historical realities as liberal bias tells me, and everyone else here, all I need to know. Reality has a liberal bias, I know. Sucks doesn't it?

I am a democratic socialist. Proud of it. Never said I wasn't. However, there are plenty things of that I think the government should stay out of and not intervene. For instance, I do not think there should be a National Endowment for the Arts. Art is a personal thing and when a government starts sponsoring art, it can easily lead to propaganda. The only issues I readily admit to being a hardcore leftist on are environmental issues because those issues are global and governments are the only things that can reasonably do something to manage those issues.

I was criticizing your use of such terms as liberal and socialism as perjoratives and snarl words and attaching them to ideas as means to dismiss them as somehow untrue. The really sad thing here is that you impy amoral actors such as the Koch Brothers, Rupert Murdoch, Tucker Carlson, et al., are simply conservatives and not the fascists, racists, and oligarchs that they actually are. There is nothing conservative about them. They are a bunch of dangerous reactionaries. Reasonable conservatives are an endangered species in the United States.

Let's review real quick.

  1. You ask for instances of American sports being as political as they are now. I give them to you.
  2. You move the goalposts and change the terms of the question by then asking when have games been canceled.
  3. You then procede to ignore the sports topic entirely without engaging in any of the examples I gave.
  4. You constantly do the same things with Boxy and ItsYaBoi asking you to provide demagogues on the left as dangerous and racist as those on the right. You ignore them and can't do it.
  5. You equate socialism and communism as thought they are the same things. I call you out on it as False Equivalance. You ignore it.
  6. You imply Bernie and AOC are out of the mainstream when, if you polled most of their positions, the majority of Americans and people around the world agree with them. I show you how the Overton Window has shifted so far to the right in the US over the past few decades that it may seem to you that they are far left but in historical context they are not. You ignore that too. You then imply that Bernie and AOC are demagogues on the same level as Trump and Carlson which absolutely ridiculous. I admitted that Omar has said some bad things. I am not a huge fan of hers because of it. But, she is still light years better than reactionaries like James Inhofe and Ted Cruz.
  7. You call me and others liberals and, through the tone of your words, imply that it is an insult. You have been doing it since the beginning of this thread.
  8. You equate Democratic Socialism and Identity Politics. Another False Equivalence. I hate Identity Politics. It does not bring people together. However, if you think that addressing the struggles of African Americans, Latinos, and First Nation peoples in this country throughout its history is Identity Politics, you truly are a lost cause. By the way, Tucker Carlson is the king of Identity Politics for whites in this country. It is just simply racism in a suit.
  9. I never said government is the solution to everything. It isn't. I take it on a case by case basis.
  10. Being a Democratic Socialist means that we all vote, all citizens together, on issues, particularly economic ones, and decide if, how, and where taxes and wealth should be distributed and used. We don't have that in the United States. Never did. The Founders made sure of that when the Constitution was written. Another word for Democratic Socialism is Democracy, which is always a threat to any power system
  12. Some of your previous posts seem to imply that economics is a true science. It isn't. It is a major mistake that many people, particularly right-wing pundits, consistently make. Economics is a social science and a rather poor one to boot. It is not a true science like Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. It does not have solid standards of evidence or proof. In fact, it is all too often used by political actors, particularly capitalist fundamentalists like the Austrian School cult and jackasses who take Ayn Rand seriously, as though it was the true science it is not. Other social sciences such as Archaeology and History at least have standards of proof they need to follow.
  13. Lastly, I am not a historian. Never said I was. I am STUDYING history. I don't have a PhD and decades of research under my belt to justify calling myself one. I may be one one day. However, compared to you, I am an incarnation of Herodotus.
I don't feel the need to engage with you any further. It is a waste of time. I won. You lost. You know it.

@Lt. Boxy Angelman and @ItsYaBoi. This one is a lost cause. I wouldn't bother anymore.

The power of the pangolin cannot be stopped!

PS - Everybody please look up plight of all of the Pangolin species in the world. They are most illegally trafficked mammals in the world right now. They are going extinct. If you can, please give a little money to help save them. Finally, call out the Chinese government and put pressure on them to do something about it in any way you can. The Coronavirus outbreak is probably connected to the consumption of Pangolin and/or Bat meat.

Pangolins are gentle and cool little animals that could use some love.
Great post and I want to second supporting Pangolins. Such unique and beautiful creatures. We should care more for animals in general tbh, but I’m veering somewhat off topic now.

You still don't seem to understand the difference between Social Democracy and pure Socialism. What anyone is calling 'socialism' or 'marxism' in 2020 isn't the same as what you experienced in Eastern Europe. It's not that hard to understand.

These people are echoing the policies that have led to many of the nations with the highest quality of life on earth (social democracy), not the ones that led to fascist dictators and communism. If you took a minute to look at the tenets of what they're advocating for, rather than being distracted by trying to reduce their entire policy into a single word, you would understand this.

You're not going to be successful in gaslighting people into believing that any policy that includes any aspect of socialism, without entirely being based around socialist leadership, is evil in the present day. We already know these policies work because they're working in nations where people are the happiest overall.

“Marxist” is just a provocative buzzword that has little relevance to the actual social/political positions that most American liberals hold.
At this point, it is used to describe any conservative-contrary viewpoint.
Simply a fad-word, which everyone has a different definition of to suit their argumentative need at the time.
Similar to “narcissist”, or “supportive husband”.
Or “female orgasm”.
