I'll say what I predict to be the involvement of each character in story mode..(A lot of stuff could be done off camera, in between time periods)
Mileena- Will be in charge of outworld for a very brief time after MK9 before Kotal Kahn kills her and takes the throne(Might not be playable)
Reiko- Another possibility of being in charge of outworld before Kotal Kahn(if he is, Mileena could either have a different role or just not be in)
Johnny Cage- Dies early in the timeline(not playable)
Sonya- A while after Johnny's death she is brutally killed by Kano
Cassie- Like his mother, hunts down Kano. She wants to avenge her mother
Kano- Kills Sonya, Cassie eventually gets revenge but does not kill him
Quan Chi- Serves Shinnok throughout the story, has a hidden plan that never sees the light because of his death by the hands of Scorpion
Scorpion-Lackey to Quan Chi throughout the storyline until near the end he discovers who really killed his clan and destroys Quan Chi
Shinnok- Although they said the big bad will be a surprise.. I'm going to have to go with him being it anyway.. So.. big bad take over the realms guy
Sektor- Murders his father and takes over the Lin Kuei shortly after the events of MK9, is later killed by Sub Zero
Sub Zero- A new sub zero from the group of Lin Kuei members that fled when the cyber initiative began kills Sektor and claims the title of Grandmaster late in the timeline
Kotal Kahn- Awakened by an unknown force, he slays Mileena/Reiko and takes the throne of outworld with the help of D'Vorah. He is more willing than Mileena/Reiko to ally with earthrealm against Shinnok's invasion, but has a plan of betrayal that ultimately leads to his demise
D'Vorah- Has a spiritual connection with Kotal Kahn and serves him.. for now
FerraTorr- Random weird lady on monster that jumps out at people to scare them, is beat into submission every time
Raiden-Still protector of earthrealm and leader of the earthrealm forces against Shinnok's invasion
Ermac- With Shao Kahn's death, he struggles to find his place, souls are switching in and out of control until he finally joins to fight against Shinnok's invasion as Jerrod
Liu Kang- Revived in a similar fashion to Sindel, he is under the influence of magic and has been manipulated to fight on Shinnok's side
Noob Saibot- Serves Shinnok and Quan Chi(Great character, but not everyone has a big role in the story*cough*Baraka)
Fujin- Helps earthrealm against Shinnok's invasion
