Drawing the Line on Being Cheap

It may have been said, but a lot of the time when commentators or competitive players say someone is playing "cheap", they don't mean it negatively. Same with playing "lame". To be honest, I think a lot of people take it too literally and seriously when someone calls their playstyle "lame/cheap".

I wish that was the case in my experience, but every time I hear a player or commentator using the word, they're saying it in a spiteful tone. Then again, like I said when I introduced myself to this place, I try to keep up with as many tournaments as I can which isn't very many. Could you post an example where the commentator uses the word nicely? You don't need to do it now, just whenever you get the time or stumble upon one. I'm in no rush :)

Yeah, take it as a compliment people! If you are playing cheap, you are difficult to beat.

The only character I could think of from that viewpoint is cage.
Cage is very difficult to fight if your footsies and poking/hitconfirms are not up to par, otherwise he isn't so tough that I would call him cheap. I mean he is hella good, but he certainly isn't stupid to fight against. Maybe if you are playing scorpion or something......

I never said they said it "nicely". I said it's not always negative.

In my opinion cheap is a goal i try to achieve in every game i play like for an example outside of fighting games i was paying call of duty and my friend told me that the famas was really cheap so i immediately tried it, for mortal kombat I'm trying to decide my current main between kabal, kenshi, and kung lao who are are top tier or "cheap" characters, that is my take on the matter

Cheap in the highest level of fighting game is the risk and reward system. If a move or a set up has a ridiculously high reward and little or no risk then it is "cheap". An example is cyrax set up after command grab, it is cheap because it provides a high reward: 80% damage or a reset. And even if you guess correct, there is no/little risk at all.

I think Aris has a pretty good outlook on all that, He uses the term cheap in his commentary but it always seems to be a positive reference to a tactic that player developed.

Am I the only one who immediately thought this thread was about spending money to get to tournaments. Lord knows I spend more than my fair share just to play MK with people who are good.
Play to win that is all. We are of the school of Cobra Kai here at Test Your Might.

Playing "lame" is legit strategy, and not a pejorative term. Cheap has negative connotations IMO. I can't say that there is too much in MK that I would consider cheap. Actually, I can't think of anything outside of glitches. Resets and traps all have counter measures.

If you are complaining about cheap play, then you are not good at this game. I'll lame out a a mediocre Johnny Cage with Mileena's air sais, and I'll chip him to death before he could ever reach me. But a good Cage will be in my face in seconds and then destroy me. I hate when people complain about cheap play. Learn the match-ups people!

That was a really dumb post.
I can beat a lot of people. A lot of very good people.
There are A LOT of things in this game that are cheap, broken, unfair, whatever.
Your mentality is bad and you should feel bad.

You can call shit cheap, and be a winner. Case in point, JWong and PL.

Cheap just means shit is dirty as all fuck to good players. It only really has a negative connotation amongst lesser-skilled players.

Please explain further. I don't see how you've countered my argument.

Yep, that's pretty much my Modus Operandi: lesser skilled player. I grew up with the word cheap being synonymous with unfair. Playing "dirty" or in other words, using whatever the game has made available to you as a tool to win is distinct from being cheap IMO. Play to win. Sling mud in your opponents eye. Still not what I'd consider cheap. Abusing lag tactics knowingly is cheap. Using the invincibility glitch is cheap. This kind of thing is unfair because there is no recourse for your opponent. No one I've played from TYM/MKU has ever done anything that made me say: "that was cheap". It's actually very hard to come by if you're playing legit people.

You said people who complain about cheap things aren't good.
I am good, and will bitch to hell and back about cheap things.

Your argument is now invalid and I can't believe you thought that in the first place.
