Drawing the Line on Being Cheap

WayoftheFist

Cold day in hell...
If I play bad players I still go all out. Even if they're friends just playing casually. My view on it is if they want to just have fun, and by fun they mean winning without having to be good at the game, then don't play me. The best someone will get out of me as far as going easy and playing less "cheap" would be using one of my really crappy alts just for my own entertainment.

"Cheap" is anything that satisfies the following:
1) Isn't universal to the entire cast
2) Is much easier to execute or implement than it is to counter

Yes, cheap does exist. Things can totally be cheap even in competitive play. Doesn't mean it should be banned though.
This is the best post in here.
People who say cheap doesn't exist are, honestly, dumb. It does exist, in and out of competitive play, and always will.

... and by fun they mean winning without having to be good at the game
It's not about winning when playing casually with friends who don't know how to play. It's just about going easy on them so they don't grow to hate you, hate the game, and so that they may begin to learn how the game works. Imagine going up against Tom Brady the first time you play, and only playing against him. You wouldn't get better at the game that way unless you had a seriously gifted mind. Just be careful when playing newbies. You should enjoy fun more than winning in casual play. If you don't, then that's just who you are, and as long as you're honest and respectful about it, there's nothing you need to change about yourself. :)

Also, your signature made me laugh :p

Perhaps cheap can exist in competitive play, BUT it's not a bad thing. You can certainly be cheap because you and your opponent have a right, but it's your job to get around your opponents cheapness.
Yeah, cheap tactics heavily influence competitive play, especially early on. A metagame will develop off the cheapest tactics while everyone puts in energy trying to find the best counters to those tactics. And then the level of play increases overall.

haha the credit for that sig belongs to Lt. Box. If someone actually wanted to play the game seriously I'll show them anything they want to know that I am capable of. But if we're talking drunken games at a friends house... I'm making lots of babies and laughing about it. I'm just really not the type to sit there and lose or even come close to losing if I'm capable of winning a match. Even casually. It's just my nature. Now if someone wants training or to run a MU that's totally different.

MK is cheeep! I think you can buy it for $10 now ;)

To quote Sirlin's epic book on being a competative gamer:

Doing one move or sequence over and over and over is a tactic close to my heart that often elicits the call of the scrub. This goes right to the heart of the matter: why can the scrub not defeat something so obvious and telegraphed as a single move done over and over? Is he such a poor player that he can’t counter that move? And if the move is, for whatever reason, extremely difficult to counter, then wouldn’t I be a fool for not using that move? The first step in becoming a top player is the realization that playing to win means doing whatever most increases your chances of winning. That is true by definition of playing to win. The game knows no rules of “honor” or of “cheapness.” The game only knows winning and losing.

This is from the chapter called "What is a Scrub?"

Cheap is a word used by those who can't win or succeed

It's purely a losers mentality
/thread.

Victory at all costs. Although the way some people go about it online is just distastefully disrespectful from a competitive standpoint.

If I could execute with Kabal, I'd be maining him right now.
But I know my limits, so I settle for 80% resets, Rune Traps, and JK-Fan shenanigans.

Don't try to draw the line. That's impossible. Only try to realize the truth....there is no cheap.
Thank you for bringing me laughter on this horrid day <3.

Cheap is a dollar store discount.

Using a glitch is cheap, or something in the game by mistake, but I don't think the latter is something that is really in MK9. I do some competative shooters and stuff, and occasionally you'll get accidents in those games.

I always personally defined cheap as something that is really easy to execute but extremely hard to counter or can't be countered at all. With that being said there's VERY few things in mk9 that cannot be countered.

The only character I could think of from that viewpoint is cage.

The only thing i can think of is Cyrax's resets. You could say that Breaker would be a counter but cyrax has anti breaker resets so there is really no true counter besides not getting hit lol

From here on i only accept challenges from people who put in the NO COMBO's code, yeah thats right going all the way back to the stone age of MK, uppercuts bein the strongest shit you can do! Take that u Spammers!!! O:<<

Cyrax combos and resets were pretty easy to get down in a short amount of time for me but it would still take me much much more practice to be able to do it in an actual match.I think cage is easier to use than Cyrax. And I too believe that Cyrax resets are bullshit.

Lol. He was some guy who proclaimed himself to be the "spamking." Had the LAGGIEST connection you have EVER played on. He would pick Kano and challenge people to No Combo code matches all the time and sit back there and throw knives. Fucking hilarious XD
interesting o3o, i must try this!!!! O: also, don't forget to xray ;D

To be competitive, learn this you must.

There is no lame, there is strategy.
There is no spam, there are tactics.
There is no broken, there is skill.
There is no unfair, there is playing to win.
There is no cheap, there is salt.
