I feel like most of this thread is comprised of people leaning extremely one way, and on the flip side people leaning the extreme opposite.

I don't think anyone really expects every woman in the game to be a walking sex symbol lol. And although I'm glad they aren't represented the way they were in MK9, in my humble opinion that doesn't really mean shit, I find them to be a bit too conservative. Skulls exploding and bloody brains flying out in slow motion all over the place is fine, but a hint of cleavage? No can do partner. I mean, you literally see more skin just going to your local mall or grocery store lol.

Again, just my humble opinion. Will still play the game for the next 4 years+ and enjoy it.

Modern Hollywood blockbusters rely on generic cute actors because they have nothing else to support them.

As a woman and a feminist, I often butted heads with those women who want sexualized characters. It is my understanding that they see them as a power fantasy, fantasizing to be as beautiful and sexy as them.
Except that is NOT my perception, an a lot of women's perception, of a power fantasy. You probably perceive the sexualized characters as empoweringly perfect, but I perceive them as demeaned.

The solution is the choice. You wanna play as a bikini babe, fine by me. But let me play as D'vorah or as middleaged Sonya.
Either is fine and neither is demeaning because women can be just as awesome and badass if they're average looking like most people on this planet and on the flip side, looking sexy doesn't take away the fact that they are strong and can do badass things. If you think women showing off their body is demeaning then you have major double standards about beauty. If you think a monster female character gives women a better image when it's in fact way more unrealistic than a fit or muscular woman, then I really don't know what to say to you because that makes no sense.

You know, as you just wrote, a woman can be a good empowering character wether she's sexy, average, or a literal beast.

The problem I have is that 99,9% of the female characters are the sexy kind.

I noticed I find myself playing the sexy female character in games that give me the CHOICE in a varied female cast, but I absolutely refuse to play the sexy female character in a game that insists on giving me only that option.

I'm in a city relatively close to DC, so I guess there's that.
I live in a small town in Canada and let me tell you, summer will make usually conservatively dressed women become liberal with their clothing choice. Makes sense too, when it's grey and cold for more than half the year you want to soak up some sun.

That's your choice, I'm not going to argue that.

NRS have definitely gone SJW, and it’s a shame that so many of the admins on forums like this are supporting them, using downright silly descriptors like “bra and panties” and “lingerie.”

MK has had a consistent design philosophy over the last twenty-five years in regard to its female Outworlders; exotic, fantasy-based, sexualised. The males too have largely followed this dress code. After MK9 dialled this up to 11 with mixed results, the pendulum has swung completely the other way. NRS has destroyed their own consistency and now the females are mostly covered whilst the males are buff and shirtless.

Social Justice is a real thing, and it’s destructive whilst bringing out the worst in its followers. Many, MANY places on the internet downright slate people criticising SJW-influenced work (as always, customers complain about a company, fanboys complain about actual people) and this will probably be my last MK after following the series since the very first one in the arcades.

I know this thread is old, but I just wanted to mention that I don't understand how NRS can try to make more practical outfits, yet still keep these heels (kitten heels?) on some female characters. They've never looked good, and I just wish they'd go and stay gone. They're just ugly and impractical, in my opinion. I'd take a super skimpy outfit without heels over this any day of the week.

I agree heels make no sense in a fighting game.

I am really glad that since MKX they took this route of making female fighters look like actual warriors instead of hookers.

Any individual whining about boobs and naked women not being in deserves to be laughed at, let alone not be catered to.

It eventually destroys the IP it’s shackled to.

There’s a reason “Go woke go broke” is a thing.
Although I would agree with other games, companies we've seen get wrecked from this fact, the reality is NRS isn't shilling for feminists and I'm pretty sure they are like Japanese game devs and don't give two shits about the PC culture.

I mean, the problem is when game developers take a political stance, but NRS never did that so I'm not sure why people are even arguing about this crap.

I just want to kick ass with Cassie, I really could care less how big her bewbs are or how skimpy her costumes are.

No, they haven't, they have not taken a political stance and they never will because they're smart. Politics ruin everything, games, movies, and friendships. So please, let's not force them to do so.

Some characters are ok being a bit more sexy or showing skin imo like Mileena. That makes sense with her personality. But characters like Sonya or Jade who are military/generals does not make sense. Its all about balance lol
Amen to that!

Funny how ALL of the most best-selling videogames of all time have not a skimpy woman in sight.

Don't know about that, GTA is like the 3rd on that list lmao, not to mention Skyrim. I love that FIFA 18 is on there tho that's awesome.

What about Lara Croft? She is one of my fave strong female icons and one of the most famous, and she wears shorts and a tank top and is usually idealized.

I haven't played the newer games so maybe this has changed, but she seems more like a male fantasy than a strong female character to me. At least in the early games.

Even as a young girl I looked up to her because of how strong she was, I didn't even notice the 'sexualized' aspect because I was a kid. No kid notices that stuff, at least in the times I grew up in and maybe the era had a lot to do with it.

In newer games, Laura's more realistic sure, she's still beautiful, but they finally gave her muscles that matches all the crazy stuff she does so that I'm happy about. I love muscular women.

In the original games, Lara Croft was designed with huge boobs.

In the new reboot, Lara Croft constantly moans suggestively and there's a near-rape scene and the devs claimed they want the player to "protect her" (as opposed to the player being her).

That's definitely more sexy fantasy than power fantasy to me.

Neither GTA nor Skyrim are about hot babes. You'll be very hard pressed find any marketing AT ALL promoting those games as games in which there's hot babes.

Sure, GTA has some prostitutes and some vaguely sexy promotional material. But we all know the game is absolutely not about sexy ladies and there isn't a relevant presence of sexy ladies.

As for Lara Croft, I find her sexualized - but I can understand why she could be perceived as empowering. Originally she was both things.
