wifi vs hardlined router vs hardline modem?

Looking for networking professionals to weigh in here.

I have a standard modem and a wireless non-modem router. When I am playing online, I turn off the router, hard reset the modem then directly connect to it. For years I read that was the absolute best set up to have. You bypass all of the built in security of the router. I also read that no matter how you configure your router, other shared devices CAN have an effect on online play. When I am not playing I run the modem to the router to have home wifi.

It is pain having to switch everything over and not having access to home wifi when I am playing but I hardly ever have issues.

The main goal of this thread is to find out if there are alternative setups with the newest/best generation of modem/router devices that will allow wifi and to maintain the best possible online play experience.

I would love to see a networking guide developed by a professional. Help to educate this community THAT I CONSTANTLY SEE TYPING/WATCHING STREAM CHATS WHILE PLAYING THEIR MATCHES AND CONNECTING TO THEIR NEIGHBORS WIFI WHILE UPLOAD TORRENTS! STOP IT!!!

I really prefer a profession or a link to a professional discussion non the matter. Not that I don't trust TYMers on the matter... ohhh wait I don't.

Before I even start writing a guide for you, who is your internet service provider, and what is your speed rate? (Check with http://speedof.me/ )

I will repost when I get home. I actually have a business grade connection at home paid for by the hospital. Its 150 down and 100 up. No fiber optic available where I live yet. Speed test usually looks 130 down 70 up. I will post model numbers of modem and router.

Sneaking into this thread, @Mikemetroid since wiring my PS4 might be a bit difficult because of how my apartment is set-up, would plugging a 5ghz wifi bridge to my PS4 improve the connection any/be worth it at all?

Also what's considered bare minimum when it comes to latency/download/upload speed for playing online?

When you do that, I can try to give you a good setup. Your speed is more than enough for a stable gaming, it just seems like you may need help with port forwarding. Which I can help you with once I get your router model.

PS4 Wireless sucks. Period. Even with my internet (100/100) and the PS4 being in the same room as my router, I can see insane deduction in speeds via wi-fi.

This is because the PS4 doesn't support 5GHz(or "N" as in b/g/n). Meaning it won't cap anything above a theoretical rate of 54mbs. But because its on 2.4 ghz, it's unregulated and doesn't have a industry standard. Thus being a unreliable piece of shit.

Your device booster would see a difference on Xbox One consoles(They Support 5GHz), but not PS4 systems.

As for a minimum download/upload, in all honesty if you had 10mbs/5mbs and thats the ONLY device you use in your household, you'd be fine. But since Netflix streams HD movies and you have family members/roomates/other devices. Nothing under 50/50 is stable enough for a house full of technology.

I've noticed this as well. I have about 170 down and 30 up and when I do connection tests on my PS4 I'm lucky to get 30 down 5 up. I've heard however this PS Pro has an improved network card that can handle the max speeds but i haven't got confirmation of that. Might be worth it to buy just for that

I have my PS4 wired, but I'm still super curious about this phenomenon since my PS4 says it's generally getting 7-25/6 with one or two random 75/x on a 100 connection when my PC's get way better.

Wasn't sure if that is a PSN network thing or something, but then "speed tests" all seem to say different things. I just got download speeds of 27, 50, and 73 run back to back using different testers on the same wired system. I'm not sure how much stock place in speed tests. The google one used to say I was getting under ten when Speedtest.net would say 90, but is more generous than it was a few months back. (Not really seeing 90 anymore. Not sure what that's about.)

It's the network card altogether. It doesn't support the speeds.

Ran the test and my download said 25.53 mbps and upload was 6.16 mbps.

I have no idea if that's good or not and am curious to know. I play with wire, router/modem right next to my ps4.

Legit wanting to know.

This is a funny question because most people have a modem/router combo these days. However, many routers these days have QOS (quality of service) options to set up prioritization on devices. You could set a rule to prioritize your consoles connection over everything else in your home.

That being said, your up/down speeds don't have much to do with your connection when playing online. You should look at the PING instead.

I get like 7mbps down and around 16mbps up on my PS4. Naturally it varies, but I'm happy with it.

It's all so very confusing.

Upload is usually around 25-30. Dunno why its testing so low tonight.

I have never understood how to port forward.. I thought you needed a static ip?

Edit, test was run with a cellphone and an ipad both on Netflix streaming shows. I didnt realize my niece and GF were in the other room watching Netflix

Edit again, TWC\Spectrum is my provider
UBEE Model ddw36c is the Modem/Router hybrid. My service is rated as 300/30, but I can often get around 350/25-30.

My ps4 speed test says 17 up 2 down from twc in ny. I have my ps4 wired to a router and my modem is from twc. I was wonder if upgrading my modem and router would help? unfortunately I cant get a higher speed from my isp. Any ideas for improvement @Mikemetroid

If you can't get a higher speed than I don't really know what you can do. How many devices are using the network? Is it just your ps4? (probably not)

If i was playing an esl match that would be it, obviously my wife and kid use the internet and I also have an xbox. What I was asking would an upgrade in router or modem give a better experience for fighting games.

No. You need better speeds if you have a wife & a kid using the internet at the sametime with 17down and 2up.

I would like to add that if you have speeds above 100mb you need to make sure you are using a category 5e cable or higher. So no old shitty DSL Ethernet cables.
