Why do people AFK in rooms?

What I don't understand is when people go afk when searching for a player match..

Due to living abroad it is crazy difficult for me to get matches... like 10-20 mins of waiting. I don't have the patience for that, so if I don't get something after a while I stop searching and go back to playing vs. CPU, but I can see other people just leaving it on... and on... and on...

Away from Keyboard. Or in this case, controller. Means the lights are on but no one is home
