This has nothing to do with people who are new to fighting games. This game looks bad and repetitive and you using the fact that people have been waiting for a re-boot as an excuse for them being hype is just ridiculous. I'm personally still going to try the game because I give every fighting game a shot, but right now the game looks like garbage. I hate when people introduce a new fighting game and all they talk about is combos and not the fundamentals behind getting the hit to do these combos.
You are aware that this is an alpha build; isn't it a little early to be deemed as garbage?
I'm not using the idea of a re-boot as a sole argument for hype, however, it is something that is attracting people to the game.
For example, you're are a huge fan of (insert game here) and there hasn't been a recent title for years. Tomorrow, developers announce that they are working on a new game that will be released soon. Would you be excited or not? Even after seeing a basic version of the game, would you notice the positive aspects as opposed to the negative ones (that could be improved) just because you're a fan? Double Helix is asking fans for their input so many things could be included / excluded so it's hard to pass judgement just yet.
A few years back when Capcom announced that they were releasing a new game (SF4) it caught peoples attention right off the bat. The official E3 trailer for SF4 didn't look that great (imho) but fans supported the series and it thrived spawning updated versions which have been staple at tournaments everywhere (same goes for MvC3 and MK9 but on a smaller scale). Why can't the same thing happen to Killer Instinct based on past experiences (of gamers / fans) and their enthusiasm for the upcoming game? It's been done before.
Finally, all fighting games require some level of fundamentals regardless of the title; If you watched the Killer Instinct live streams, they mentioned that the game will require fundamentals (counter-poke game, etc...) and not be a combo fest.
