So first a bit of a story.
My first experiences with Mortal Kombat and fighting games in general came like many others in the arcade. I was never that experienced or interested in fighting games in general and I'd be the first to admit most of my strategy involving Street Fighter involved a lot of fireball spam at my younger brother until he grew enraged.
Cue some years later and my tastes evolved into a desire for more "masochistic" games. Things like X-Com, Dark Souls, Dwarf Fortress and some others. Though my main jams have always been shooters, especially Team Fortress 2.
So, one day I'm watching one of my favorite Dark Souls streamers on twitch when he gets his hands on MKX.
It wasn't the gut wrenching visuals or the "compelling" dialogue.
It was the sheer simple but complex process of getting good at fighting games. My experience before had always had me assume that fighting games were simple things that tested the accuracy of your button pressings but not a whole lot of thought went into them.
Boy was I ignorant.
The nice thing about that streamer was that he explained a lot about what he did understanding that his audience was mostly a Dark Souls crowd at first who don't understand terms like Hit Confirm or Footsies. So, before I even started I was learning. But, being a strictly PC gamer who could not fathom throwing down 400+ dollars on a machine that I couldn't work, play, and watch porn on all at once I had to stick to things my rig could handle. So, I flirted briefly with Skullgirls and its merciless and soul crushing community. Not strictly unfriendly mind, just that there were few if any new players to level up with and what was left were dedicated fans.
Then I got a rig that could handle MKX, and a connection to match.
It needs to be understood outside of some brief stints of competitive gaming in shooters (particular CS, AvP2, and TF2) I've never been interested in serious competitive play. Still not. My only real interest is mastering a skill, in this case proficiency in a particular fighting game that's been a part of my life for over 20 years.
So, I started by going through and messing about in training mode trying each character on for size. I settled on Kotal Kahn. He felt good in a manual sort of way. His combos and mixups were simple enough to execute and it wasn't too long before I managed to build a 38% 1 bar combo off of an F2.
If I stuck with Kotal I'd probably be okay with him right now. Instead I decided I really wanted to get some thigns unlocked and played through storymode.
That's when I discovered I really, really liked D'Vorah. She felt smooth, aggressive and I didn't struggle at all trying to do basic strings.
Some lab work to learn her venomous 50/50's and I took her online to see where I was. So far it's been great even in the cases of expected ass kickings from people with way better execution and reactions than me. Visible progress feels good even knowing that the journey is long and arduous.
Now I've two goals before me.
1. Get my execution down better so I can learn her basic bnb's.
2. Find some people I can level up and play with.
So here I am. If anyone is interested my steam id is BallisticSalsa and I'm in the US East Coast.
