Tekken 8 Post-Release Discussion Thread

It could make sense that you'd want to save bigger guests for later in the games life to keep the hype going. Tekken 8 is still going strong right now.

I was just in Japan for a few weeks, and FF stuff is everywhere, convenience store isles, billboards etc so idk I'm guessing they're more stoked about this. Like if they added a C tier Marvel/DC character to the roster people in Japan and Korea would be left scratching their heads (like us with Clive) but people here would probably be pretty hype. They're just playing to the audience that they are more familiar with, and that may well be larger.

Or next DLC character is Lightning from FF13.

Clive looks fairly braindead. Can't imagine this character surviving a couple patches.

Damage and wall carry HAVE to go. His kit also seems over tuned but we'll see.

Yea tbh after this weekend I might have to take a bit of a break until the Clive usage dies down and/or he gets nerfed. But even if he is nerfed I just don't want to play against this character. Not fun to play against even if you win. His design is pretty much everything I feared it would be combined and it's legitimately making me lose interest.

Its about to be alot worse now that he's released for non pass holders. I've just been doing quick match for the past couple of days so i've only ran into a handful, can't imagine what ranked looked like, and will look like for the coming weeks.

remains to be seen. He's at very least annoying/difficult to fight against, and gets way too much damage and wall carry off his hits.

imagine putting mk11 skarlet reach in a tekken game
Damn that sounds very annoying

Yeah will see how things play put but yeah, not suprising that a guest chracter in tekken turns out busted as fuck, its their MO.

There's a few things he has that are just stupid, like for example on the Coliseum stage this guy can literally wall Carry from start position to the wall. Utterly ridiculous. From range 3 he has moves that can hit you, and of course safe mid long range homing moves. Lots of stupidity. How "good" he'll be the jury is still out, but he obviously won't be bad, and is just an annoying unenjoyable experience to fight against. Almost feels intentionally stupid to double down on their decision to include him.

Yeah thats worst case scenarion, when you dislike the charscter itself and then on top of that the character is a nightmare to deal with lol. The wall carry sounds absolutely absurd like wtf.

I like Tekken 8
Funny enough I use both pad and stick depending on the character I'm playing. Like Xiaoyu or Lidia I use pad, but Steve or Leo I prefer stick. I use a Victrix Pro PS5 pad when I use pad, it's really good. I'm not too crazy about the PS5 system controller but like anything else I'm sure it works fine after using it enough.

This i think will come the more you practice/play. Law's Slide or Lee Slide types of moves are a good example of something that feels easier when you're in practice mode but when you're in the full match speed you'll probably bobble it a few dozen games before it starts to become easy enough to do in your sleep lol. With MK/Inj there aren't moves in that pattern so it'll just be building the muscle memory then you'll never drop it again.

There are some amazing movement practice drills on YouTube. Tekken 8 has simplified movement a lot to make it easier for newer players to enter. Now the KBD isn't really required like it used to be, you can be solid pretty much by having a really fast backdash/Sidestep game now. Like double backdash (or forward) with sidestep-block movement is all you need, KBD is just extra to flex now.

And I knew you would like it haha I called it. When it starts to all click together and you start reacting to things fast paced with punishes and hitting tech traps you set up it's like euphoria.

Nice, I can run some with you midweek, I've got a few characters I can run. Mainly skip Monday and Friday but I'm on the other days. AoN_SaltShaker if you're on PSN. If you're on Steam we can meet in a lobby and play while we get watched by some randoms in there lol. Lee is always a good character to get experience against.

And an added bonus is that we are probably the only two people alive who still play the character (I don't as much as I used to lol).
I’ve been busy but I’ll add you soon.

Decided to pick up a new character so I don't get annoyed playing ranked with my main while Clive is running around in his current state.

Landed on Leroy. Its very weird playing a character with so many good lows and no good mids, but I appreciate the change in gameplay. Also nice to play a more straight forward and low execution character. Yet another character I am surprised is played so little.

Leroy received many nerfs in Tekken 7's last major balance patch, and then he also received various nerfs from Tekken 7 to Tekken 8.

Moves like d/f+1, b+1, b+1+2, f,f+1+2 (current f+1+2), b+4, d/b+3,1+2 (current Hermit b+3,1+2), etc. are better in Tekken 7.

He did receive a couple of buffs and some new tools, but most Tekken 7 low and mid tier characters received a lot more.

As you accurately stated, Leroy has bad mid attacks. Your d/f+1 in Tekken 8 is like your jab and low jab in Mortal Kombat 1, and Leroy's d/f+1 is one of the worst in the game (i.e., -6 on block. no tracking, bad follow up attacks, etc.)

Most tier lists rank him low on the tier list, which is why he is rarely used.

Its an unfortune trend that all of the Tekken characters I find cool or fun are also low tier lol. Doesn't really matter to me though since I'm not super high level yet. It also forces me to learn the game since I can't abuse anything, so I'm ok with it.

Feels like more people follow tiers and flowchart strats in Tekken than compared to SF and MK so far. I've been seeing the same 5 or so characters constantly from low ranks to purple. Azucena is a good example, extremely cringe character design that was fairly busted at launch and over played, now that there have been a fair amount of nerfs to her, I think I've fought exactly one since I started playing again.

Where have the JP players gone in Street Fighter 6?

Why has there been a mysterious influx of Havik/Mavado players?

From my experience, players tier whore in all modern fighting games equally.

They see which characters win and then they pick those characters.

It definitely happens in every game, I'm just speaking from my personal experience that its seems more prevalent. Like I've probably played well over 200 matches between quick play and ranked since I started playing again and haven't seen half the roster at all.

I am not surprised, but I am certain you have already realized that the "beginner characters" like Alisa, Dragunov, and Clive, are generally used more frequently than the "execution characters" like Bryan, Heihachi, and Steve. Then there are also the "specialist characters" like Yoshimitsu and Xiaoyu who are rare. Some characters are simply unpopular like the bears, Leo, and Zafina. Finally, people hear on social media that characters like Azucena, Lee, and Raven are low tier, so they are not used very often.

For this reason, Tekken 8 can be very difficult as well as very frustrating to play. You fight a character like Clive every other game, and you eventually learn the match up when suddenly a wild Xiaoyu appears on the versus screen, and you have no idea what the hell is happening throughout the match. You will even see top players who play this game for money and who travel consistently drop certain punishes versus characters like bears and Zafina.

Starting to think the best way to learn is to play every character to a certain point, at least purple. I have a good idea of how the game is played now, I'm mostly just getting knowledge checked to death. Also throws, I can react to throw 100% but I just default to 1+2 because there's no way I'm going to be able to differentiate while also trying to figure out what attacks are being used against me.
