Obviously we won't get any answers for a while, but there's no reason not to talk about it. Here's what we know so far. I will update with anything that gets revealed / proven that seems relevant.
Backstory:
-MK9 happened which means MK4-Armageddon did not.
-25 years have passed (While the story mode will encompass the 25 years, I'm assuming all the characters in game are "current" and not say, Scorpion from 15 years ago, or Sub Zero from 20 years ago.)
Unconfirmed Characters:
-Dead: Jax, Shang, Sindel, Nightwolf, Jade, Kitana, Liu Kang, Stryker, Kung Lao, RoboSub, Kabal, Smoke and Shao Kahn.
Noob:
-Last seen sucked into the soulnado (sometimes this kills, sometimes it doesn't)
Raiden:
-Last seen "tending the fallen" and "rebuilding the realm"
-Unlikely Shinnok would have ignored him.
Johnny Cage / Sonya
-Last seen with Raiden, but known to have gotten together.
-Possibly retired, or maybe just out of commision (abducted? killed?)
-Replaced by Cassie
Mileena: When Shao Kahn was first "killed" there was talk that the throne would be hers, she might rule Outworld.
Ermac, Reptile, Sheeva, Baraka, Cyrax, Sektor, Kano : Defeated, but not confirmed dead.
Shinnok / Quan Chi: Known to be plotting as of the end of MK9.
Rain, Skarlet, Kenshi, Freddy: Not factored in story mode, total wild cards.
Confirmed Old Characters:
Scorpion:
-Still angry at Sub Zero, so he still hasn't learned the truth or gotten his rest.
-Presumably he's working for / with Quan Chi then.
Sub Zero:
-Kuai (Cyber) was last seen shorting out on the church floor, Bi Han (Noob) was last seen flying into the Soulnado.
-Has previously discussed "their" innocence to Scorpion.
-Appears not to have aged, possible a third Sub Zero.
-Grandmaster variation / presence of medallion means possible leader of Lin Kuei
New Characters:
Ferra/Torr
-Possible backstory with D'vorah's people.
-Ferra can wound Torr with no repercussion, most likely Master / Slave relation than equal.
D'Vorah
-Possible royalty (Brood Mother / Swarm Queen variations)
-Her kind are "offended" by whatever Ferra/Torr is.
Kotal Khan
-Obvious Aztec (Earthrealm) influence
-Variations all point towards an actual God, possibly Elder.
-Hector referred to him as an Aztec God via Tweet.
Cassie Cage
-Child of Johnny/Sonya
-Spec Ops Variation suggests military training, Special Forces might have still come to pass.
