Personally I can’t see any other way out of this narration other than the two timelines being “merged” somehow at the end (probably leading up to a Quan Chi / Onaga cliffhanger but hell I hope not).

In all seriousness, it never made sense to me that these assassins covered their faces yet wore bathing suits and bikinis. If the initial Eastern influence had been carried to logical design conclusion, Mileena and Kitana would have been more modestly dressed. I'm pleased to have this design aesthetic in recent games. Pandering to geeks who want women to have big boobs, porno outfits, and tiny waists is probably not the way to go in a more informed era of gaming.

Be careful of mischaracterising as “geeks” fans who enjoy looking at the female form (it’s perfectly natural, after all) and appreciate the design consistency over a 25 year period. It doesn’t matter that the females covered their faces in MKII but wore bikinis; that’s the cultural aesthetic NRS established for the Outworld, by definition an alien world. For men and women, undress is frequently the order of the day.

I never saw Kotal as a jobber to begin with, he did lose to Kung Jin and the Lin Kuei, but Jin was trained by the same people as Liu and Lao, he was probably the same age as them when they were beating really powerful people. And the Lin Kuei is the Lin Kuei

Isn't Shao Kahn an immortal god like Raiden? Or isn't that at least heavily hinted at?
Kotal Kahn is an Outworlder from the race of Osh-Tekks. Doesn't sound to me as if Kotal Kahn could truly compete with Shao Kahn, if it came down to the wire.

The only way for Kotal Kahn to win, is to have his story chapter during his fight against Shao Kahn. I've said it time and time again: MK characters turn into invincible elder gods during their story chapters. All establishments and logic are thrown out of the window at that point.

Be careful of accepting aggressively sexualised depictions of women in video games. I see it as a real scourge of the gaming industry. Thankfully, things are improving.



The cultural aesthetic has been redesigned (and I think improved) by NRS by the very originators of the characters. 25 years is a good amount of time to evolve both design and ideas about how women are presented onscreen. From what we've seen so far, they're getting it right. It's reductive to have women in bikinis fighting in videogames. A bit trashy.

I've been thinking about this issue a lot, a month ago I would have disagreed, but now I agree. Having women fight in ridiculous skimpy costumes alongside men who look badass does make people not take the women seriously and as that's still sometimes an issue, tho not as widespread as before. I think moving away from silly costumes and making both men and women look badass is a very good idea. Especially for a game like MK.

He's not human, but he's not like Raiden. And nothing fits that idea of "mortal beast, but with immense power" more than a dragon.

I love how NetherRealms software gave Shao Kahn some beast-like features, finally showing he's not just a buff human in a loincloth.

Mortal Kombat nearly happened without a female character until someone suddenly realised. Hence the ICONIC Sonya. In MK1 she was every bit as tough as the male characters. Honestly, it was pioneering stuff. I'd rather have that than scantily clad 'babes' there to fulfill male gamer fantasies. Also, we play games to have fun and feel empowered. Women play the same games and deserve the same benefits. It's...surprising to me this is even a debate.

Shao Kahn isn't immortal. At least, I believe he had to renounce his godhood in order to become the emperor because the protector gods are not allowed to do things like rule over the people they are supposed to protect.

He's just super powerful because of all the magic he's learned.
