Spawn Came Out a Little Underwhelming

Immortal

Blind justice....
Right , have you even played him ? I was like you too . Hes good but only on paper .... but when you play with him you realize hes pretty bad lol
I was all over him first several days. V2 is very solid like i said. I just dont like his gameplay flow, he feels super clunky for me not what i wanted but everything i wrote about him is true and he is ATLEAST a solid character. Watch other people who don't mind how clunky he is - doing just fine with him. He is NOT a low tier character, no way.

I really wanted to make him work , im big fan of this character and i love how he looks in this game , best looking character with best gear and skins by far . But he sucks . I actually believe he may be low tier , not even mid . There is a reason no one plays him . Hes free to jumping and jumps are big part of this game . His normal sure have long reach but recovery on whiff is terrble . Overall his frame data needs buffs . v1 sucks and everyone agrees on it . v2 may have big dmg but so what ? its hard to open anyone up with hm and if you finally do he will prob have breaker . He gets zoned out by a lot of characters and hes projectile parry with cape sucks . v3 I dont know , not played it much but these pseudo mix ups from what ive seen are easy to escape and punish.Even if he lands something he doesnt get much from it .
Lol these posts.

He's not free to jumping, his S3 is his best AA and he gets 35% from it. D3 low profiles 80% of this game's jumpins at the exact range close-up where S3 doesn't work.

His S3 has godlike recovery on whiff and his B1 and 34 are punishable on whiff as they should be for normals with literally no hurtbox. You literally have a 50-50 strike/throw mixup after pokes, just like every other char, and you even have it AGAIN after you choose to strike and it doesn't work bc you're +2.

His backdash is the 2nd best in the game and whiff punishes 90% of the cast's pokes with backdash to B1 after half his strings. His projectile parry is a way for you to get 50% for 1 random projectile read, and you can even cancel it if you're wrong, literally fishing for half life with low risk.

The chars that outzone him only take 1 whiff to lose 41% of their life, his mb projectile at the latest possible cancel is impossible to react to, meaning that if you've dashed you get clipped and you can't tell if he actually did it.

I'm not even gonna mention unbreakables and breaker traps from his KB throw that do minimum 40 maximum 64% and how he gets free backthrows and corner control, as well as a 50-50 guessing game after he hits with a D1 in the corner between 41% strike and 40-64% throw.

If you want to open people up with this char, you don't know how to play him, he's the exact opposite of what you want.

Yeah, I've played him vs tournament lvl players.

Lmao, he's literally a better version of kitana and Kabal. If you think that's he's "slow"...try playing kitana and come back. He's not a mixup machine, he's a god like neutral machine that outspaces 80% of the cast.

Better than kitana 100%. His buttons are exactly what hers should be like. Now Kabal...I'd say 50/50 or they are tied.

If you have the patience to wield him, V3 Spawn can be an absolute nightmare.

He reminds me of MK9 Sub-Zero, except he enforces his space and range with his normals and the command grab chain instead of Ice Clone. Get life lead, force them to chase you and make mistakes jumping into stuff, swing your chain like Master Betty.

I've been waiting for Spawn since MKX, when talks about him just started to spread across the web.
I immediately jumped to him as soon as he came out. Previously I was playing mostly Noob Saibot. So this transition was... Well, it was a struggle for me, so I somewhat understand who finds it's hard to play as Spawn. I would stick to the point of the rest here, just give it more time, don't worry about losses, it will come around.

What people said here in my opinion is true, he is strog in neutral, you have to come somewhat a little bit different game style, be more footsie focused, have patience. I find his V2 by default very good variation. Mind you he has very strong mixup after restand, you go either f413 or throw, if you land f4 first frame after restand recovery. And consider that after nice whiff punishing with a normal cancelled to the shoulder charge. His normal buttons, 34 especially are great, very good to punish 80% of getup attacks, every time for forward rolls. Corner will be scary if you stand on the tip of 3. It's high, but will catch jump outs easily, followed by shoulder charge. This is just great.

His d1 is mad. +15 on hit, then go for 11 or f413 to confirm block or hit (f413 is safe from punishment, f413 fireball can be risky, f413 and cape parry cancel might take by surprise to go for neutral).

Sometimes it's very hard to open up the most patient players, but this is where V3 comes in. You have mixups changed for damage, but little by little you'll get there, he has tools to mess up brains.

tl;dr - he is a solid character, requires some time to adapt to his game style, not very fun to play in beginning, but it will later.

I main Spawn and I agree with Immortal. You people are playing him and the game wrong. A character isn't bad just because you don't know how to play footsies. Spawn is a good character. Learn how to confirm pokes and play footsies and you'll see success.

There is a reason no one plays him. The reason is because people don't want to actually play a hit and run, whiff punishing style of a character. The people that do play Spawn understands how his playstyle works and we do it well. He is not free to jump in on. He has good anti-airs. Recovery on whiff should be terrible on every character in a footsie based game. Stop making mistakes if that is the problem. This game gives you change after chance when you make mistakes and you may be used to that. In V2 if they do break away then they are left laying on the ground with no wake-up options and you have really great OKI then. I've discussed this in my post on why V2 doesn't need the armor break move. So it's either you take a crap ton of damage or you get to lay on the ground and guess a strike/throw mix-up. This brings me to another point. You don't have any wake-up defensive options against Spawn which is a HUGE advantage in this game. you don't have to deal with the scrubby game mechanic of having to guess when you punish your opponent. Let them break away, so what. You still get offensive pressure and they lose their meter. Zoning in this game sucks. He can very easily get in on zoning. He does not by any means get zoned out by anyone in the cast. Patients is a virtue. That saying is so true and should very much be applied to Spawn. The point of Spawn is to not "mix" someone up. At least not with Overheads and Lows. The point is to play and hit and run play style. Capitalize on the opponents mistakes. Out smart and out play them. You have to put in some work. Just because you have to work a bit to get some wins doesn't mean a character is bad. You have to use your brain which is a huge reason why I think Spawn is a very rewarding character to play. Play him for a month. 20 games a day for a solid 30 days. Give him some time. Adapt to a different play style and then come back and give your opinion. He is around A tier in my opinion. By now means is he low tier or mid tier.

There are some characters in this game that literally can NOT do anything against spawn's 34, nothing. Just hold it take it and let Spawn do whatever he wants.

Spawn is a really good character, any character with long range weapon normals in this game is good. Spawn's mid goes nearly half screen, his short hop attack goes nearly half screen, he's got sickening movement (DLC boyz), sickening hit adv on his pokes (DLC boyz), plus frames, and some of the best freaking damage for 1 bar in the game, if not THE best damage. 380dmg for one bar? that's dumb imo

Spawn is super solid if you take advantage of the tools he has. He has the best dmg in the game, probably the best checks in the game and his movement in general is top tier. If people want to open up their opponents, then Spawn is not the character they should play. He is a whiff punisher who will DESTROY you if you are not careful with your spacing.

I bought spawn recently and with minimal knowledge of the char im riding to Elder God with him

hes a super solid character overall

exploits mistakes hard
d1 on hit into 11 destroys neutral duckers who are looking for a grab
corner throw mindgame
insanely good projectile that can be delayed
f4 is an okayish low stagger
he has advancing mids even tho a little bit on the slower side
has insane wavedash
also he can punish alot of shit without having to do a microdash (for example, Liu kangs fatal blow)
