Smash Brothers Scene Documentary - "The Smash Brothers"

When I was part of the Smash community (2004-2007) I had no idea there was such thing as an FGC. I seriously thought that Smash was the only fighting game that was competitive at that level. None of us at the time gave a shit about any other game. It's still like like that today for the most part.

Also, 100% of the tournaments aside from MLG were all community driven. A max venue fee of maybe $10, and a $20 entrance. More of the money would go towards the winners, combine that with the community tradition of offering housing (a surprising amount of people usually offered) to those traveling and you basically have a very economically efficient way of making sure people can come and compete. Obviously, not all of those things are as practical as they once were, but there are definitely things that our community can learn from them. First is organizing our own NRS majors, which is something I can hopefully do later this year.
When I first heard about the idea of an NRS focused major and/or event, I originally thought it was a good, albeit unnecessary, idea.....but after hearing things like this I've been swung. This scene *needs* one. I don't mean to insinuate that there's some vast Capcom conspiracy to keep other fighting games down. I seriously doubt they think about it like that, and most of them seem like they do what they can to support all scenes in the FGC, but how can we ever be their equals when the best we can ever seem to hope for is to ride on their coat tails just hopping to be a featured side game at one of their majors?

Our community doesn't have a Ken. He won like 14 MLG's and placed 2nd in 2. That is absolutely ridiculous

The less of a player dominance there is in a game, the better the competition is. but in MK9, we DID have a REO. Who had a streak of Top 3s until EVO 2012, where he got 9th and more.

I write too much.
Did the house situation ever lead to problems? When I heard about that, the first thing I said is "that's a lot of trust". You wish everyone would be good people, but it's not always the case.
There were occasionally small issues, but honestly due to how the community was set up, it was usually a tightly knit group of individuals and so most of us knew each other.
I know the friendships I made in the Smash community long outlasted the time I played it, and at least in OH everyone knew each other well.

Plus in terms of theft or whatever, with as many people around as there usually were, most of whom were friends with or knew the houseowner, it would be really hard to get away with stealing stuff.

I know I hosted a few tournaments/housed people without issues.

Honestly it was a pretty cool system. It was very different from the way traditional fighters run tournaments, but it did allow the community to become more tightly knit and friendly than just about any other out there.

Have seen very episode of this. Didn't want it to end. Thought the M2K/Mango/HungryBox years were going to get swept under but they're just as good as the early years. All the way up to EVO 2013. By far the best FGC related thing I've ever watched (although King of Chinatown has this awesome seedy realness to it as well)

It's pretty awesome how they went into detail with everyone's personalities and issues rather than just their playstyles and accomplishments. It's those details that help you understand a scene in ways that you wouldn't just looking at the match videos or the tournament results.

I didn't really expect to have emotional moments watching this, but I did. The feels
