I've been at an empass for weeks about my MKDA favorite/trump card tertiary.

Some people of high standing believe him to be broken. Overpowered. A monster.

Others see him from a numerical/data-based standpoint and say he can't stand with the highest tiers.

Of all the members of the cast, I don't think there's a character that draws as fine a parallel line in opinions between top or terrible tier as Quan Chi.
And so, I bring the question to you, friends, so that we may settle this issue, once and for all.

Discuss.

"Broken" doesn't necessarily mean top tier/overpowered...
Certainly not, but there seems to be a polarizing line in the sand as far as he's concerned between those who believe the Trance/Trap are over the top, and others who feel it's equal and balanced compared to some of the other "broken" aspects/strategies out there, especially since it hels cover up a lot of his shortcomings.

Broken. next question
But why, friend Toki...why? Does not Quan deserve the right to be a bumblebee?

(That made no sense to anyone but us -_-)

Rune trap breaks the rules of the game, but Quan is generally garbage without it so I don't care.

Quan is underpowered. He needs all of the following:
Faster moveset
Even Lower hitbox
Even faster uppercut
More damage on ex rune
Cooler win pose
More woolay

-The only move I'd ever want to change is to speed B3 1+2 up enough so it can't be interrupted.
-He would be flat as his own grey, Netherrealmian ass.
-He'd officially be in Quick Uppercut Recovery mode all the time.
-I would be struck down violently by anyone I ever defeated with him.
-There is NO win pose in MK cooler than Quan's, with the slight exception of Stryker.
-There is never such a thing as too much Woolay.

Haaave you met Sektor?
I don't play him, but I play against him a lot, and it's so 50-50. Quan Chi has the tools to blow ppl up, i think it's just not utilized to it's fullest. His string are a bit of a slow, but his trance is a great move and his boosts must have some use, though i never saw anyone use it. Rune thingys are good footsie tools or at least i think they could be. His rune trap is broken as hell but he needs it. If you use this at it's best it must be damn powerful.

You will serve me in The Netherrealm
I would give up the rune trap in a heartbeat for faster normals and a safe teleport, even if I have to spend meter to make it safe. Seriously. He's a great "character," and he can win at high level, but will we ever see him at MLG? I think not.

Quan is indeed a good character. I feel as though he is slept on greatly outside of dedicated mains.
He makes good pocket character because of rune trap. Haven't seen him played in a long time

Rune trap saves him. But that all he really has, and unlike Cyrax. He needs it. But I play Kung lao, i don't have problems of being underpowered :)

sorry had to comment.

Quan is far from broken. A broken character often has lots of favorable MU's. quans slow normals and reliance on unsafe moves put him somewhere in the mid tier range. The rune trap itself is not broken, it is just unlike anything in the game. without proper quan experience you cannot hope to prepare for him. what he does have going for him is 60-80% comeback potential, meter dependant of course.

And this is why your signature suits you.
Thank you, Dink.

Quan Chi: the only character in MK9 with an X-Factor.

So Quan Chi can do a combo, that granted takes a lot of life, but requires THREE BARS. Cyrax can do more on one bar. You have to remember, if you see a QC building up meter than he clearly doesn't want to use it for breakers or ex moves, so take advantage.

People only hate the Rune Trap because it's unblockabkle. There are far worst things in the game like Smoke, Jax and Cyrax reset, one bar, MORE DAMAGE.

All in all, most character could get damage near to Quan Chi if they could do a combo that allows three ex moves to be used in it.

Even Kano has a 56% corner combo that requires 3 bars. Is Kano broken now? I think i've seen a Reptile midscreen combo, three bars, well over 50% damage.

Also Quan has 40%+ combos without the need of meter. If you're lucky enough to activate a red boost, you can do even more damage. Quan Chi is not broken, infact he has to take large risks to get the damage output he needs, so no...he's not broken, he guesses wrong, he gets blown up.

The full 3-Bar Rune Trap isn't where it's at anymore.
Mixing up string BETWEEN the 212 EX Runes and maximizing damage is where it's at.
There's no one in this game who has to sacrifice more Meter to get his job done than Quan.
(Except Jade.)

Given the rest of his average-to-below-par tools, I think that's fair.

I do think Quan is quite meter dependent. I found a bit of a gimmicky way to get a boost in the match but it requires one bar. If I dont get punished for it, i then have to get in without being hit or I lose the boost. People forget they can breaker out of his Rune trap as well.

The problem lies with characters below him that dont have good tools like Quan. He'll never be up there with Kabal, but, he has tools that will give most the cast cause to be worried.
