Playing variationless?

I was messing around in practice mode or the "Lab" as ppl call it and when you go to the practice options screen you have the option to choose variation and you can choose NONE and then it restarts you have no variation in practice mode. It probably have been discovered or been mentioned, but I wonder why they added that?

It's helpful if you intend to learn more than one variation, in that it gives you a general feel of the character's universal moves, and then once you've got to grips with that, you can begin looking into the differences between variations. It's all about those stepping stones, you know?
