Is NRS Losing Quality?

Ok I was waiting for some form of confirmation that MK1’s life cycle was at an end before making this thread, and it seems like the Definite Edition is making it final.

What are your thoughts about NRS as a whole after the life cycle of MK1? Are you guys happy with the end result? What were the pros and cons, the strongest feature and the weakest feature? How do you feel about the roster and gameplay? Did you enjoy the storymode? Where would you rank MK1 compared to MK9, MKX, and MK11?

I’m asking because I’m really curious to see how others feel about this. This has probably been the most divisive MK I have seen so far in the NRS era. This has been a wild experience personally.

I just want the next game to be 1v1. Not Kameos 1v1, not assists or tag or whatever other gimmick but straight 1v1
Unfortunately, it seems that NRS has a hyperfixation with adding weird mechanics to every title that seem to exist solely to make the game feel "different". MKX was heavy on rushdown and mixups, MK11 went the opposite direction and gutted combos and mixups, plus added a horrible meter system that required almost no skill or resource management to use. Kameos are MK1's fixation. I'm sure the next MK game will have another one...

MK1 was overall a disappointment to me. It was such a downgrade from MK11 in a lot of ways (not necessarily talking gameplay). The presentation, replayability, (single player) content, DLC choices were all lacking and questionable. While I admit they improved the game and its in a much better place now than it was a year ago, I had much higher expectations for this game.

While I really wanted to see MK2 not be in the hands of WB/NRS, I don't think there's much hope for that so I'd be fine with them really taking their time with MK2 and it not releasing for the next three to four years so we can actually go back to a fun, quality MK game at launch again.

In some aspects specially related to the rushed launch of Mortal Kombat 1; the technical issues and incompleteness. This, however, is a publisher issue and less a developer issue (so WB Games).

I'm also not a fan of Kameo Partners, however that's not a quality issue in the slightest, and just because I don't like a design decision or direction of a game doesn't make it bad, it simply makes it not for me.

General production values for NetherRealm Studios games remains high.

Honestly NRS needs to take a break from Mortal Kombat.
Write an actual good story.
Branch into another type of games like single player games
Probably a new IP that it's not DC or MK Related

And after 2 years of break, ironing out MK, keep the game simple first, no kameos, no variations, just straight up klassic kombat.

I would love to direct one and deliver, but according to the sources, getting only WB hires to work on NRS

Hopefully the story goes in a better direction next time cause it felt all over the place in this game. They need to make Hanzo Scorpion again, in the first place, and actually dive deeper in the story that was told in deception. Decent game overall, had the potential, but too many things were missing at launch.

Not the best launch, but the end result of MK1 is the second-best game we’ve had in the modern MK era.

Heavily neutral-focused, with a lot of room in the meta for dirt and creativity, a great roster, probably the most balanced MK game, and some of the best character designs we’ve had since MK9.

Quality wise I thought MK1 was great, really loved the visuals. Movement of the characters felt great, Kombos looked good, and while I don't personally care for the Assist/Kameo type of games, I think the system they used worked. For a modern FGC title they had pretty good character variety and solid kameo variety, and it gave players a lot more to lab and figure out.

Overall really happy with the end result. The only big cons for me was being a bit too slow to address things at launch and other times in regards to character balance, and I thought the story was pretty weak. I also thought Invasion, while a neat idea, could have been done better.

As far as ranking games, I'd probably go:

  1. MK1
  2. MK11
  3. MKX
  4. MK9

Actually, the launch was very good, it was only exggrauted.

LOL, you directing MK would only lead to it's doom. MK1 story is PHENOMENAL, and there's no need for a break. And they are not gonna stop with gameplay-based customization systems. If they didn't do it for MK1, which was a reboot just like MK9, they are not gonna do it anytime soon.

As a long time fan of Mortal Kombat, I can honestly ang genuinely say that MK1 is one of the best Mortal Kombat OF ALL TIME!

1) Best story mode in the history of all fighting games, hands THE FUCK down

2) Some of the best version of the characters ever done, especially Reptile

3) Kameos are amazing and even better than the Variation system,

4) Invasions is incredible and both that and Towers of Time have fixed the flaws that MK11 had in it's single player content (although it didn't have that many)

5) Tons of stuff to unlock in the game, and once again done better than MK11

6) Kombat League is the only Ranked mode in any fighting game that is actually done properly, making MK1 the only game that actually works both the single player and online departments

7) Graphics, voice acting and soundtrack are better than ever.

All in all, Mortal Kombat 1 is truly a PHENOMENAL game. And no one can deny that.

I like Tekken 8
Can someone clear things up for me? Didn’t Ed Boon say there will be many years of support? And this will be the longest supported game?

I think the MK Twitter/X account said the same thing.

i'm tired of the zero communication bullshit. "we are a live service and we support for years" but they dont actually support any sort of communication. Its fucking awful. WB doesn't give a shit and numerous heads at NRS don't give a shit either. fuck em

Dude, I'm as 1000% serious. MK1 is truly PHENOMNEAL, and the story is the greatest story ever done in the whole genre. I've even made a whole thread explaining why the story is that good, and so is the rest of the single player content. And if this is what Dominic Cianciolo can do on his own, well I wouldn't mind at all for him to keep making stories and on his own, because the way he wrote MK1 was brilliant.

If you want, here's my thread.

Well things change, a lot can happen in one year and 8 months.

I think if this were to be the final patch then the game wrapped up in a pretty decent state as a fighter. MK11 mismanaging its variations is its crowning flaw, imo, as they'd been fumbling the bag since before releasing the game.

I don't want them to quit MK but I definitely wish NRS wasn't stuck in such a shitty cycle and we could have a game supported as long as Capcom, Namco, and ASW support theirs.
