The 48 metascore movie? One of the worst videogame movies I’ve seen. Particularly being a fan of the franchise. I respect your opinion, tho.
They're all bad though. There is no video game movie out there that's actually good. Here's a list that seems quite complete. The only ones worth watching for basic entertainment (in my opinion) are Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider (2018), and some of the Resident Evil ones.

Lol that reboot Lara Croft is terrible in the games...
The reboot game series is critically acclaimed for a reason. Shame you're not liking it.

umm, but didn't Sonic actually have a decent critical reception? hell it's even mentioned in that list you posted (didn't watch it so I can't comment on the film's quality myself)
Also the SF2 animated OVA now that we mention it, that got a pretty decent reception from both audiences and critics.

It may have. I didn't bother with the Sonic the Hedgehog film myself, as it didn't look appealing to me.

Sonic was actually pretty good for a video game movie :)

I think it satisfied its target audience/ages well.

Can anyone tell me how can this movie be successful if its box office takes such a huge hit due to covid ?
It’s success will be determined by a combination of its domestic box office, views on HBOMAX, and overseas performance.
The studio will have to use these numbers, plus it’s audience/critical engagement, to determine if it meets whatever criteria they deem appropriately as “profitable.”

Critically it was mostly panned. Most of the critics who enjoyed it seemed to either go in with really low expectations, or qualify their grade "for a video game movie". It made good money at the box office though.

Sonic was awesome, it ticked off enough boxes to be one of the best game adaptations ever. Let’s not kid ourselves though, Jim Carrey carries that movie. This is why I’m optimistic about MK11, it has some damn fine actors!

Damn fine actors? Most of them were chosen cause they can fight - but probably can’t act. And they are mostly Z list actors. Poor Sonya, the girl who is playing her was in that disastrous Megalodon shark movie... there is no hope for this movie.

Yeah you’re tripping, keep that negative energy to yourself. Objectively speaking you’re just wrong.

It’s pretty inevitable that it’s going to be bad or barely mediocre at the very best. The guy that was attached to the first movie and essentially the reason why Annihilation is... well Annihilation is Larry Kasanoff who’s also behind this new one in some production role.

No it’s not. There’s B and even some A list actors, time, a decent budget - both which Annihilation didn’t have - and Russo said he didn’t want to just throw cameos in there but to have more fleshed out characters. Just because there’s one guy involved from Annihilation doesn’t mean anything.

I have low expectations for this film, but of course I'll give it a try for sure because I always try not to judge a film before watching it.

Greg Russo will also write the Resident Evil reboot so the MK film will give me the first impressions on how he handled the script. I have zero problem with the MK film being his first script (If I recall correctly he said it was his first big project), but this can be a good or a bad thing. But honestly for Resident Evil it can only be better than the Anderson version... I hope lol

To be honest the MK lore is a mess right now, especially after MK11 story and Aftermath. The best possible thing to do is to ignore the recent MK stories and keep things simple.

I didn’t even know about RE but this makes even more positive. He’s going back to the source material and making it closer to what happened in the games. The first RE trilogy or cycle was god awful, did not enjoy it one bit. It’s also a good sign for the gore and bloody aspect of MK, which Russo claimed will be there. Gives more credence to my theory than the idea of this going the DC / Marvel family film route.

I think Russo has definitely kept it simple and close to the source material, yet also willing to not include staple characters and include more obscure ones / not involved in the original story. That is good, since it will be more creative than the og movie and definitely different. We’ll see how different and if it works. MK fans will never be pleased though, that’s for sure.

Pretty sure the guy directing this has directed nothing but Australian commercials in the past, lol. We’ll see how it goes, but my hopes aren’t very high.
Just remember, both Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick got their start directing Australian television commercials.
