Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition announced! End of the games cycle?

The Definitive Edition has been announced with everything already released + the new movie skins. This is a major signal that the cycle of the game is nearing it's end if hasn't reached it already. The only saving grace is Ed saying more on an X post and the "AND MORE" below. I don't think now was the time to be vague as this tells everyone the game is done and in it's definitive state. Did not expect that today! Price tag is $59.99

With respect to length of support, there's different metrics being measured here. Are we talking support in terms of new characters, stages, skins, Story Expansion? Or do balance patches count as well since, we'll, that's actually supporting the game.

Including balance patches, the list from longest supported to least goes:

  • Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate
  • Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns
  • Mortal Kombat XL
  • Mortal Kombat (2011)
If we're excluding balance patches and only including characters and skins and such, Mortal Kombat 11 was from Apr. 2019 to Nov. 2020, so that's 19 months. Mortal Kombat 1 was Sep. 2023 to May 2025 (movie skins), so that's 20 months.

Its cool having people like you actually fact-checking these things. In my head, MK9 was something that got looots of patches and probably 2.5 years of support. In reality, it was supported much, much less than that, but I was 17 years old when it launched and every patch got like major tier list shakeouts. Weird how memory can distort our impressions about time.

Thanks. Outside of my jokes (really, Kitana needs lots and lots and lots of buffs!!!), I try to keep things very ground and factual, and clearly separate my subjective opinion from objective fact.

For Mortal Kombat (2011), the game came out in April 2011, and I'm going strictly off memory here, but I recall that Freddy was released in August 2011. The Komplete Edition came early 2012 and there was only at best one more patch after that. The Vita version launched with the Vita which was March 2012, I think. So the game had support for under a year, as I recall. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong there.

For Mortal Kombat XL and up, I remember the bulk of the dates just because I'm weird like that.

Idk about these skins counting as support.
T-1000 was releases in march and thats pretty much where it all ends, with 2 mini patches after that.

A thing to note here also is that firstly mk9 and mkx, as well as injustice 1 released their dlc characters fast and much much closer one after the other for a particular komabt pack(character pack).

Mk11 started this super long drip feed style of release, which had characters release like 2 months from each other(after also the inital dealy post launch or after the previouse kombat pack).

This heavily inflates the "support" period but also the comparison of mk9 and mkx support periods being lower then mk11 and mk1 presented in this way is also not something that can be used to dismiss criticism about mk11 and mk1 support periods.

And thats because mk9 and mkx didnt promise years upon years of support, these games(including injustice 1) were their first ones as the newly acquierd studiod under wb and they are literally the ones that cemented the nrs cycle of releases in the first place.
People specifically crticised the short length of support of nrs games, so mk11 and mk1 were supposed to be the ones that dont get dropped less then 2 god damn years in like their previous titles... yet here we are, and not only that but they specifically said these games are going to be supported for many many many years.

Thats the issue and the fact that both these games still didnt reach even 2 years of support even with these drip feed, extended release periods is kinda funny, again especially when it was claimed they will have many many years.

Wait, I just realized: we didnt get fucking ROOMS before they ended support. :(
Thats pretty wild, you know what else we didnt get thats pretty basic and essential, easy to do? Customisation slots in a game with skins and gear customisation....

The all elusive practice mode while searching for online matches is also missing.

But hey you can buy mastery levels with dragon crystals( cough money cough), how awesome is that

@PrinceGoro We're seeing variance in this thread as to what people consider "support," which is why I listed varying comparisons.

For me personally, I consider support has ended when the game isn't getting any more content and balance updates in general. And for me, just because support ends, doesn't mean being able to play and enjoy a game ends.

Mortal Kombat (2011) and Mortal Kombat XL were also developed during a different period of gaming history. Development cycles were shorter overall, games were targeting 1080p at best with lesser visual quality, effects, complexity, etc.

During the 7th generation, typically we'd get a sequel to a game in a few years. Now, it usually takes half a decade or more. So having content release slower for Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1 doesn't surprise me. Even more so when pandemic delays and restrictions of the time are taken into account.

I agree it doesnt mean you cant play or enjoy the game, i more so have an issue with missing features that are up to standard of todays features in games( as well as other fighting games nrs competes with) that wont get fixed as support ended, as well as like i said promising something and then not delivering on it 2 times in a row now.
