On the one hand, it's amazing what they're about to do with cross-play ... all the MK11 players will be able to challenge each other competitively and the online tournaments will have all the players from around fighting each other, not just the owners of a specific platform like those PS4 tournaments happening in the past few weeks.
But ... on the OTHER hand ... there is so much potential wasted in the Next-Gen versions of MK11. Things that could be done that probably WON'T be done because the game has to run on a PS4/X1/Switch at the same time - especially when we are considering online play.
For example:
1) Shang Tsung: With no loading times and memory issues to deter him, Shang could become the MK2 Shang Tsung once more - able to instantly morph into all characters, making him a lethal option at the hands of pro players who play more than one character, like Biohazard. He could become truly God-like. Only handicap would be to not have any variation moves and only keep the universal combo/special moves each character has.
2) 2v2 mode: One of the most beloved modes in MK9 could be back now that there are no memory issues and every single character can be instantly accessible. And as a plus, it could now be played online, not just local co-op.
3) 3-slot character assists can now be given to the player even if the CPU intends to use one in the ladders since there are no memory / loading issues.
4) Instant-loading could allow the character select screen to be fully customizable and show the icons of the character based on the gear/skin you've currently given them, instead of a fixed character portrait (allowing players to finally get rid of the revenant portraits).
5) More slots for custom character setups. Not just the five slots given for all. You could be able to have a hundred slots for each character and make infinite custom gear setups.
All this will probably won't happen because the PS4/X1/Switch version will now hold the game back.
