MK11 Next-Gen edition: I am SO torn ...

On the one hand, it's amazing what they're about to do with cross-play ... all the MK11 players will be able to challenge each other competitively and the online tournaments will have all the players from around fighting each other, not just the owners of a specific platform like those PS4 tournaments happening in the past few weeks.

But ... on the OTHER hand ... there is so much potential wasted in the Next-Gen versions of MK11. Things that could be done that probably WON'T be done because the game has to run on a PS4/X1/Switch at the same time - especially when we are considering online play.

For example:

1) Shang Tsung: With no loading times and memory issues to deter him, Shang could become the MK2 Shang Tsung once more - able to instantly morph into all characters, making him a lethal option at the hands of pro players who play more than one character, like Biohazard. He could become truly God-like. Only handicap would be to not have any variation moves and only keep the universal combo/special moves each character has.

2) 2v2 mode: One of the most beloved modes in MK9 could be back now that there are no memory issues and every single character can be instantly accessible. And as a plus, it could now be played online, not just local co-op.

3) 3-slot character assists can now be given to the player even if the CPU intends to use one in the ladders since there are no memory / loading issues.

4) Instant-loading could allow the character select screen to be fully customizable and show the icons of the character based on the gear/skin you've currently given them, instead of a fixed character portrait (allowing players to finally get rid of the revenant portraits).

5) More slots for custom character setups. Not just the five slots given for all. You could be able to have a hundred slots for each character and make infinite custom gear setups.

All this will probably won't happen because the PS4/X1/Switch version will now hold the game back.

So it's official ? Cross play is coming to ranked mode ? Also in koth mode ?
They didn't say for which mode, they just said cross-play will be available. We'll most likely find out this month or next month.

What a day. What a lovely day.
If MK12 is released on previous and last-gen, sure, it will be held back. MK11 though? No.

Outside of the load times the most noticeable difference in the PS5/XSX version will probably be some better lighting effects and higher resolution. The game was designed for PS4/XB1 and will remain that way.

It sounds like you’re expecting things that wouldn’t happen until the next game. MK11 is a last-gen title, so they definitely wouldn’t make drastic changes just to port it to PS5.

It has nothing to do with crossplay — they’re just not going to randomly redevelop a Year 2 title when that effort has to go into their next game instead.

So what’s happening exactly? You didn’t really say in the OP. Not really been in the loop, all I saw is new DLC characters dropping.

Owners of the game who get a next generation console get a free upgrade to the next gen's version. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series version of Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate feature 4k graphics, enhanced visual quality, reduced load times, as well as cross play in some modes.

But does mk really need ray tracing?

Yeah, it's really cool they're doing this.

The OP is expressing concern that if they would do an actual next gen version as opposed to an upgrade, they could add more features to the game, like tag. Since it's just an upgrade and backwards compatible with the current generation consoles though, that's not possible.

Of course, there's been no announcement that NetherRealm Studios is looking to add extra content like that.

At the end of the day, it more or less sounds like the next gen consoles will have features that are currently PC-only (4k, the enhanced visuals I expect to be native 60 FPS in all modes, etc.).

There is no excuses to not allow Shang Tsung to morph on next gen for single player. Excuse has always been hardware limitations and now they don’t have that. Try it on next gen and then go full blown on the next game

Having every high detail character with all of their animations, krushing blows and additional special move assets with no loading would probably be too much to ask for even from next gen.

No, it's not, considering how fast next gen consoles can load and dump assets from their memory.

Did you see how demon's souls loads an entire level in 2 seconds while its ps3 counterpart needed 12?

explain to me a good control scheme for shang to transform into 36 different characters.

Given the throughput of the next-gen SSD's and the fact that a character data file probably isn't much more than a few hundred mb's, it does seem it could be a possibility in theory.

How is it that the PS4 can't handle 2v2 when this is a fighting game with an environment that's basically just a background with no player controlled camera? The same PS4 that runs 150 player BRs and RDR2?

It is better this way

I don't know anything about programming or game development.
  • But Rockstar are better than NRS
  • MK11 runs at a rock solid 60 fps and RDRS runs at 30 with your PS4 sounding like a 747 taking off.
RDR2 and TLOU 2 are the best looking games on PS4 though and it's not even close.
