There's always going to be someone better no matter what you do, so I don't see how those 900-20 record guys bother you.
Agreed. I mean...how many people with that kind of record do you even run into? No need to be discouraged because of that.

I always told myself I'd stop playing something if I ever was below a .500 winning percentage. As long as I'm winning more than I'm losing, it's all good. Bottom line is asking yourself if you're having fun. And you currently have an 85% winning percentage. If you really want to improve, hit some of the better players up on here. I'm sure a few would be willing to give you games. That's really the only way to truly improve.

most people wont stick around and take there beating while trying to learn a game. I feel you. my community here played the hell out of injustice where everything was plus or safe and it was just hold bd to block. Now that MK is out and you have to RC or hold R2 people wont even look me in the eye when its time for MK casuals..... Just sit down and figure out who you want to play. Don't play the character because you hear he was good. Play em because you have fun with the character. that's the only way your going to have fun with the game and stick with it to learn it. If i get board with a game i pick up a secondary. You could try that. When you see thos crazy win/lose records all you should be telling yourself " Wow. that can be done!" not "im never going to catch up to this guy" Just stick with it. eventually you will be the person trapping people in the corner. Take a step back and see what you didn wrong. See what put you in the corner. Maybe go through every character in the game and get familiar with the move lists. You cant just learn your character in practice mode and go. The more beatings you take will just be more experience for you. Which is what it sound like you are looking for. A reason to get hype/fire about the game. Patches from NRS can be annoying but they can also get you hype too. (if its one you want lol) aka that Shinnok buff!

I agree that it's hard to up your game online. Just the other day I was fighting this really really good erron black. He beat me about 5 or 6 matches in a row. (Actually a very good connection) I kept rematching while slowly seeing his patterns and gaining knowledge myself. As soon as I beat him once...guess what? He quit and didn't want a rematch. I would have loved to kept going to see if I'd finally figured him out but he just left. I guess there's those online players who are really good but at the same time only love winning, and therefore don't plan on having a hard time playing against better players than them.

I don't want to give up the game. That was never an issue. The main point of the post that I was trying to accentuate was that I never saw myself getting so good at the game that I would be able to compete at a high level. I am good enough to go online and beat scrubs and noobs all day, but as soon as a really good player came along, I was done for. I'm totally willing to learn, but I am unsure as to the point of doing so because there's no reason to if I can't use the skills I've learned in an offline, competitive field.

Bottom line, I'm an old school gamer. I prefer the shoulder-to-shoulder, head-to-head live action, standing in front of an arcade machine, battling it out. Those times are long gone, unfortunately and that's where I was most comfortable. These new days of sitting on a couch with a headset, trash-talking anonymously over the internet is B.S. Times change, I guess....and that sucks.
AGREED. Sadly, those days are fairly dead. Equally sadly is that the NRS games have notoriously awful netplay, so you dont even get a "real" experience most of the time. KI, Skullgirls, TTT2 all have spectacular netplay. I'm in Philadelphia and regularly play Skullgirls with a friend in California, and I may as well be sitting on his couch. Truly impressive.

The biggest problem is that all of these kids CARE about their online record and think it means something. The best thing you can do is make friends with people here on TYM and only ever play private sessions with them. It's infinitely better.

After years of struggling, I've finally been able to admit to myself that I'll never be the competitive player I was back in college and period after. Wife, work and life in general now have robbed me of the hours I used to be able to sink into a game every day. Its tough, because the competitive fire to be good still burns hot inside me, but realistically I'll never achieve my potential again haha. Such is life. Plus, times are different. Long gone are the days where I could walk into University Pinball and the place was packed with people you knew any time of day, ready to play at the highest levels. It was like Cheers for gamers haha. Damn, I miss those days!

Anyways, from one old-schooler to another, I feel your pain. =)

Dude we play online, in a non competitive environment. The last thing I'd give a crap about is mine or anyone's record. I honestly think I'm a natural born genius at fighting games but I still lose more than my fair amount of games. Why? Because it's online and you can't outplay stupidity combined with Lag.

If you aren't willing or don't want to compete at tournament level, that's fine then don't bother. But don't cry about others being better than you if you don;t want to level up.

Great response! Very well said. Yes, the struggle is real. My machines are lonely with just myself to play them...

Don't think I'm crying about people being better than me, but I can understand how you could see it that way. I don't REALLY care about records either. I would love to compete at tourney levels but my point was whether or not it would be worth it for me to even bother trying since my ONLY option for good, competitive level games is online and you described it best yourself...

Online records don't mean anything. You're worried too much about it and it's getting in the way of your fun.

And by "don't mean anything" I don't mean, "winning doesn't matter", or "just play to have fun". Hell, even in the competitiv sense where one should do everything they can to win as much as possible: online wins/losses don't matter. Key word: online. I'm sorry if this kind of spits on your record that you are proud of, but it's just sadly the case given the state of MK online play.

Results in a game with 10 frames of lag in even decent connection are just not in any way indicative of skill at all.
So just don't let it bother you.

Also, I think it's a mistake to put your competition on a pedestal so to speak. It's ok to respect the skill of great players, but don't tell yourself that you can't be as good or better than the person who 'wiped the wall' with you. Other players may have accomplished more, or at this point in time, know more about the game and have a better understanding of it than you, but at the end of the day they're only human, they aren't special nor were they born with some sort of god-given talent, they simply pushed for their goal (whatever that goal may be) without wavering until they got to where they are.

I try not to let it bother me but when things like this happen, it's hard not to. I just played a really good Kenshi player in casuals. I got streaked 0-10. That was NOT fun. Got combo'd to death over and over and there was nothing I could do about. When I learned one of his patterns and started winning, he'd change it up and annihilate me again. I stayed with it for 10 matches but never even came close to a win. That's what I'm talking about. It just so frustrating. No one likes getting streaked and you can't tell me that it's fun for anyone. It's not a matter of my skill, it has to do with not being able to block the combos correctly. One will start low, I learn it and then they'll do one that starts high and it throws me off again. Ugh. Oh well. Maybe things will go better next time.

Lol, happens with me that too and some of them you can hear the constant tapping of the button on the results screen when you have just beat them.

Sometimes you just know when a player is gonna be an ass. 9 times out of 10, a win streak of a 150-10 is normally a troll, who for one, rage quits via pulling (without the quitality) or beats you and then instantly leaves (I know sometimes there are valid reasons for leaving) but you kinda just sense it when it's a rank whore trying to get wins to boost their stats and the last one is somebody who just poachers for new players all the time and avoids experienced players.

Least you stayed, but just bear with it and grind on and learn the patterns and matchups. I got bodied by a decent JC player 5-0 but then i switched to KL instead of SZ and it ended 3-2 to me and he didn't know KL that well.

Yeah the 50/50's in this game are brutal, one wrong guess can decide games, trying using armored moves to avoid the situation all together. Believe me, I'm also not a fan. But I'll tell you what when I first started playing Vanilla Marvel vs. Capcom 3 It was my 1st fighting game I started playing seriously. I came across someone online who was infinitely better than I was, I was frustrated through that whole set beyond imagination. Played him exactly 107 games in a row until I finally won a game, that was probably the best feeling I ever got playing a video game. Laugh all you want but trust me I thanked that guy afterwards because he literally leveled me up!

Now, Not everyone is like me, but I will always hit the rematch button until I get a win, and then even after doing so I'd hit it again just to see if I can do it twice.

Never forget The Great Ferra/Torr Scare!
I've lost all the interest with learning this game, when it first launched and i played at my friend house i got destroyed, the second week was the same thing, so i thought with myself maybe it was the character i picked (Ferra/Torr), so i tried jax, reptile, kano, erron black but ended choosing to play with kano (commando), on the third week i was already able to connect some of FerraTorr combos i learned here in TYM and reduced the amount of leg sweep i did with kano to only 6 before i managed to do the commando variation grapple, jumping to last week i came to realization (after 2 flawless defeats) that MKX type of game-play does not suit me, now i will keep playing in my friends house when we are all united with ferratorr and kano, but i will not invest time trying to learn any other characters like in mk9 that i could "play" with almost every one except a few others characters, this in your face corner locking type of game-play where every character (except the ones i liked and wanted to learn) have an overhead-low/ low,mid kombo strings is not for me, I've been reading a lot of threads here in test your might so i already know what people will say, "learn the match ups, go to lad, read the frame data, use armored moves". but i feel that no matter how much i try i will never be any good in this game so why should i bother getting good when sub zero can break every ferra torr armor move with his :l2 :(.....

Thank You Op for this thread now i feel better letting all this out! :D

Awesome. I'll usually keep hitting the rematch too, but at the end of the 10th match, he "quitality-ied" on me. I guess he got tired of kicking my ass and wanted better competition. I don't blame him.

Play the game because you love it. Go to tournaments because they are fun. Winning is great, but there is more to the game than just Ws and Ls.
@YourMKArcadeSource I totally agree with this. As an old-school arcade guy, I'm sure you already know this though. I've met so many cool people through fighting games. Several of my closest friends originally started at guys I'd just play Tekken 4 with. But the friendships have long since outlasted our competitive days. I still keep up with the scene, and go to tournaments just to play for fun, catch the high level play, and see old friends.

Also, my god, where do you live? Those cabinets are gorgeous.
