I Need Help. MKX Noob PS4 (First Ever Fighting Game)

Hi everyone. I'm new to this site, made an account today as I've been looking everywhere for tips/help with MKX and this seems like the best option. To start off with this is my first ever fighting game (apart from MK 1&2 when I was a kid but hardly remember them) and I just can't seem to get to grips with what I'm doing. I wouldn't say I'm a complete 100% noob as I have completed the story mode and won a few fights online but fighting online was just doing moves (no combos), whenever I face someone good they just tear me apart with combo's and I can't seem to block or stop them. I have been corner raped by predator where he just kept bouncing me off the ground before I could even get back up :S plus I have faced a meliena that just kept jumping on my face from far away and I couldn't stop it. I can only seem to use Liu Kang, it's the only character I feel comfortable with and the only moves I know are the basics like fireball, the flying kick, the multiple flying kicks/punches. Every other character feels slow plus none of my combos ever work. I have tried to do a simple Liu Kang combo in training multiple times that involves (PS4) F OO then FBF O to do the 3 standing kicks that combos into the multiple kicks to the chest but no matter how I do it I can never chain moves together. I can go fast/really fast, time it so when last kick is about to hit do it then etc etc but nothing seems to work. I'll even show people me doing the combo in practise with button inputs so u can see I am doing it right and can do it fast enough etc. Even read up about release checking and turned it off but nothing works. If someone could help/give me tips/train me at this game I would really appreciate it a lot. All I want is to learn the basics of doing combos etc but just can't seem to do anything plus I can only play good (good to me) with Liu Kang lol. I'm in EU, my PS4 game tag is: Gary_LFC_08. Thanks

Edit: Just saw that you were EU, sorry I can't help you due to region lock.

Start small with memorizing strings making them second nature. "Auto-pilot" you need to train your brain to react fast enough to use the correct strings to punish, start combos, etc. Step out of your comfort zone. Try a different character. I would go into training mode and get busy trying to understand the frame data so you can properly understand what punishes what for which characters. Try to put together some combo's that don't require meter as well so you can start to get a feel for when to use it. I really am not an expert. I've just played quite a few fighting games. Once I was invested in fighters I found other games lackluster. Just my opinion. There are plenty of people on TYM that can help you much better that I can. As with most fighters though, you are going to get out what you put in.

I'm willing to learn and put the time and effort in as I like the game and want to get into a fighting game but I'm just bad at it. I've tried reading up a lot on frame rates etc to try and understand the game better but like I said I'm struggling to even do 1 combo. I don't get how u chain/string moves together into a combo. Is it timed? Do u just do all the moves really fast? I just don't know, tried all different ways in training to do a simple Liu Kang combo but just keep failing no matter how fast I go or how I time it and can't seem to find any help on the internet for beginners about doing combos/when to time them or how fast to go etc.

Sounds like you are having problems with the cancel window. Find out which moves, strings are cancelable into specials and give it a try the window is a bit hard to get used to however once you do you should progress much faster.

For your blocking problem you'll have to learn which moves hit low and which hit overhead. Block high for overhead and low for low. All jump attacks hit overhead.

For combos dont wait for liu to finish the standing kicks before you input fbf o. Instead do it all as one continuous stream and it should all come out. Most combos can be done this way because certain strings can be 'cancelled' into special moves.

A good thing to know when using this site is the legend people use when describing moves/combos. Sooo...

1 = square
2 = triangle
3 = X
4 = circle

So the combo you're trying to do would be written as f44, fbf4

Although an easier combo to start with might be 113, b34, bf2
Just keep in mind that 113 bounces them off the ground so in this instance you DO have to wait a bit for them to fall before you input b34 bf2.

If you're trying to get the basics of combos down, I wouldn't say Liu Kang is the best choice for practice. Try executing some Scorpion or Kung Jin combos first, then go back to Liu. You don't have to play or Scorpion or Jin, just practice a couple of their combos. I can guarantee you'll get a basic knowledge of combos and have an easier time executing some of Liu Kang's combos if you do.

Does every combo require a cancel? See I'm really new to this and I might sound like a noob but is cancelling when u don't press the last button for a move and input the next move or do u have to cancel by pressing the d-pad side button twice? I tried following a simple youtube video for Liu Kangs combo with input instructions but just can't do it. It just shows 3 move inputs to do and doesn't say nothing about cancelling or anything and I've seen the inputs in training and done exactly the same but it doesn't combo. I can do all the moves easily on there own but once I try a combo it's like the game doesn't react to my inputs

Thanks, I'll try seeing if I can do combos with other characters first and take it from there

For the F44, FBF4 combo I have tried doing it really fast as one, tried timing etc but nothing seems to work. It's like the game doesn't react to my inputs even tho I am doing them perfect and really fast

Ive been playing liu since the game launched and i will say that fbf4 can be still be tricky to do quickly in a combo. Make sure you are only doing f44 and not f444 because that string can not be cancelled into a special move. If the jump kick comes out than you need to be careful how many times youre hitting 4.

As i said though fbf4 can be tricky so you might want to try f44, bf3 or f44 db2 first. Any of his specials (in dragons fire) can be cancelled into so give them all a try.

Cancelling sounds more complicated than it is. It just means that when you do a combo string normally it has certain recovery frames afterwards (like the lius leg going back to a standing position after kicking) but doing a special move immediately after inputting the string ' cancels' that part of the animation and instead replaces it with the special move.

Now first off, don't expect to be good immediately, it takes a VERY long time to get good at a fighting game, hell it took me 3 iterations of nether realm games to get to a point where I can put up a fight at tournaments, but of course I still lose some I have much to learn. If you are not in for the long term commitment, quit the game now.

My best devise is to keep learning. Go online and whenever you encounter something that your struggling with go into practice mode and learn how to beat it. And you should learn basic things like how to read frame data and terminology.

I'm know i'm only doing f44 & hitting circle twice as i've practiced a few times in training & watched my inputs & I don't do the 3rd kick to knock opponent down but still no joy :( I'm just going to try the simple combo's with other characters & see if I can do any combo's at all because I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what it is I'm doing wrong. Thanks for explanation of cancelling, I get what u mean now since u said about Liu's leg going back but even when I do the f44 then fbf4 really fast before the f44 move is finished, the inputs come up in training but Liu just stands there after f44 like the game isn't responding to the next input of fbf4. I just don't get it lol

Also if it's not already off turn off release check in the controller options. It makes it harder to do certain inputs.

I know it will take time & i'm willing to learn, I was thinking about selling the game because I couldn't get used to it but I kept practicing after the story mode & found I liked Liu Kang. I'm still a noob but know most of Liu Kangs moves so I can put up a fight against an average player but I just can't combo yet. It's my first fighting game so it will peobably take me a very long time to get to a decent level but hopefully u guys from the site can help me learn quicker as i'm in it for the long run

The learning curve for FG is pretty steep, trust me we have all been there.
A few advices:
1) I don't think LK is a very good character to start with (weird execution specials high exucution required to use some of his most important tools like air fireballs), I always suggest CT Kano in that regard: when you can play Kano well you've learned the basics of the game.

2) Learn the basics: I think this guide made by a member of this site is very well done so I'll link it:

3) Since this is your first FG Improve your execution: playing with others will not be of much use if your execution is too low. You have to be at least able to do specials consistently (don't mash your D-pad even if sometimes it will work, check that all your imputs are clean), learn how to special cancel, get used to the run mechanic and lastly learn some basic combos.

4) Watch good players play and undertand what they are doing.

5) Play with someone better than you, if you only play with someone who can't play you'll get a lot of bad habits.

Also if it's not already off turn off release check in the controller options. It makes it harder to do certain inputs.
I already turned release check off the other day after reading about it but it still feels the same to me, probably because i'm new to MK & haven't really got to grips with it yet. I appreciate all the feedback tho, trying to read up on stuff as much as possible & learn new things/tips etc from u guys

When you get to the stage where you need to learn some easy beginner combos that do impressive damage to a new player and most likely to your friends if you have any that play tha game. They're quick easy tutorials that can get you on the road to comboing I also have a tutorial on running in combos as well as how to punish something when it's whiffed or blocked:

I take requests for any characters or concepts so please if you must - just ask :)

Focus on getting some combos down before you learn advanced fighting game concepts, that's what I did.

Timing is strict for certain combos in this game, look for certain cues that indicate when to press your next button, for example if a character does a kick press when their foot goes back to the ground etc.

Also Liu Kang's FBF 4 is extremely hard to combo into, check the Liu Kang combo thread to try to get some easier ones down

Liu Kang just feels the most comfortable player to use for me but i'm going to try messing around with other characters. I'll give Kano a try as i've never thought about using him. I never mash the buttons even if i'm getting my ass kicked because I want to learn the game properly, I have choked a couple of times tho in a online match where i just don't know what to do & do random moves from panicking lol. I watch quite a few streams off good players on ps4 too but I haven't got no one to play with as I mostly play fifa & other games with friends so need to try & find someone I can train with. I'll check out the video too, thanks for all the help I really appreciate it
