How do YOU learn?

Got talking about this with a few MK9 players, and I found the topic to be pretty interesting because you typically don't associate things like studying habits to games, so I just want to see how everyone learns.

Everybody learns differently, even when it comes to fighting games. Some people are auditory learners and they really rely more than most on sound queues, other are purely visual and need to be able to see whats going on in order to understand it, and some are neither; they just practice and practice until they eventually learn the premise of that game.

Personally, I'm a visual learner, even in real life I need to see what I'm learning. I think it's why I like MK9 so much, you can really see everything that is happening with ease. Everything from combo timing to counter poking to punishing, it's all very easy to see because the game is slower paced. If I go for a Smoke reset I associate the gravity scaling and position on the screen (the variables in hitting the Smoke reset) with a portion on Smoke's body so I know what to aim for. Other games like Marvel present a bigger issue for me, everything is so fast I honestly don't learn well. I can't learn combos to well because the combos are so fast it doesn't allow for me to see when I need to input something, combos in general are just harder to follow. I really don't listen to sound when playing unless it's music lol.

I know some people that really tune into the noise, of course seeing is still apart of their game, but they rely on sounds quite a bit. My old training buddy BigKaballs used sound quite a bit when NDC'ing with Kabal and another one of my old clan-mates said he relied on sound a lot when he played. Then other people are really neither, they just practice in repetition until they get it.

So my question is, how do YOU learn?

I get the crap kicked out of me, then I have somebody who uses the character better than me explain what I should be doing, then I can do it for a few minutes, then I turn stupid again and I resort back to scrub tactics and getting blown up. lol

In real life I'm probably a more visual learner, with a bit of kinesthetic tossed up there. I don't think I could learn anything just by hearing it, I'd just get confused

i bang my head on the wall until i crush my opponents hopes

I try to add strategy to every move I make, no matter how small. I decide what to do based on risk/reward and my opponent's habits and comfort lvl.

I'm a corporate trainer and instructional designer IRL so I can speak from professional experience and education. There are three primary ways of learning: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic (hands on.) Each person learns differently, but the vast majority learn through hands-on application. I myself fit into the hands-on learning dept.

Sometimes I can learn new tech online. I love tech but I suck at spotting opportunities to use it. Not sure if you call that footsies or fundamentals but I assume it must be learned through experience. Sometimes my brain trolls me vs a jumping opponent into thinking I can crouch to make my hitbox smaller, only to eat a full combo

Playing people who are better than I am, and spending a lot of time in training coming up with setups to see if they work. I am definitely more of a visual learner though.
