Hands-On Deconstruction of The New Killer Instinct by Maximilian

Immediately following the wave of excitement over Killer Instinct's announcement at E3, a number of players and media outlets have been able to spend time with the game and gather their impressions. Veteran fighting games personality Maximilian has put together what is probably the most complete and detailed description of the game and it's mechanics to date. In his new video, he talks about everything from the feel and pacing of gameplay, to similarities to other fighting games, the combo system, breakers, linkers, ultras, usage of meter, and more.

Take a listen as he breaks down the game bit by bit and describes the opinions and experiences of everyone who had a chance to play:

Killer Instict is being made availble to the general public to demo, via custom cabinets that are making their way around the southern California area. If you're able to go try the game, make sure to post here and share your experiences with everyone else!

Never played the originals but this does look like a hype fighting game.

It may not be the popular choice; it may be considered the stupid choice to some/many people; but KI is the only game I wanted from this years E3, so regardless I'm in with the X1...probably day 1.

This thread has an overwhelming number of Likes.
I don't think that now is the time, where people are active in 'Mericaaaaa!
But not that it matters. I dont care about. I just find it weird, since you're doing yourself more work by creating a new thread, posting everything in there, closing the other one, pushing it to the Netherrealm ... I don't understand the mods on this board at all :-7

Nice breakdown. Hearing Maximilian talk about it managed to make me hype about the game just when I declared it dead. There might still be hope! I certainly would love to see this game succeed and become an amazing competitive fighter.

Welp. Time to make friends with some random Xbox fanboys / NLF douches. They are the only ones that might buy an Xbox One at this point. I want to try this game out but there is no way in hell I am paying 500 moneys for that POS console.

I like CrimsonShadow's attempt to get more likes, and I also like you calling him out on it.

Of note, the fact that this is Free to Play should be celebrated heavily by the FGC. One of the main issues that makes developers not really support a game's tourney scene is that there's little benefit to the developer. Once a game is released, supporting tourneys does little to increase sales after a short while.

By making it FTP, ala league of legends, this changes. Suddenly tourneys can be used to promote sales in characters, and tourneys where non-Jago characters win will be auto advertisements for those characters (This may lead to Jago being not great tier btw). This also incentives more and more new characters or re-balances as the game goes along, because a re-balance could incentive people to buy certain characters who were previously low tier and ignored.

I like this way of thinking. Still in the end its about more money when succesfull but its eventually positive for us if its succesfull/good.

Do you personally consider a fighting game with only one character as F2P?
I don't, since the character variety has to be there, even though having only one character would automatically turn it into the most balanced fighter :-|
However, Killer Instinct is not free to play. The shit you download will be a demo and how many demos do you see in tournaments? You'll have to buy the characters to actually have fun, like you maybe would have it with League Of Legends.
But then spawns the question: Why wasn't it the full package from the very first beginning and so on? How much will it cost, if you buy everything separately that you can buy?

The concept of "FTP" has nothing to do with it being "free." Free is a misnomer. But the price is irrelevant - what is relevant is that because of the pricing scheme, a developer has incentive, like LOL, to continue supporting the game's scene for a much longer duration than they do with a game in which they sell you 95% of things (except for some DLC) at once.

It's a fighting game ... It's Killer Instinct ...
It's in it's pre alpha and already has 3 characters announced, yet you'll get only one at the beginning.

I agree with you overall on the F2p idea, but that does not apply for Killer Instinct.
Tekken is doing something similar, but they're offering 4 characters, yet their approach sucks as well and they're doing it more to get people interested in Tekken Trance Tournament 2, which can be purchased.

When it comes to Killer Instinct, it's just a weird business model.
Not only is Killer Instinct a very old franchise, that has a specific kind of following and will potentially not appeal to the current generation of gamer at all, they make it even worse by brining in an inexperienced developer, who has a bad track record of movie licensed games and at the top of that they're making it even more unappealing to the mass market, by offering you only one character.
Maybe they think that's a great idea, because with the game being free the gamers can check it out and if they like what they see, they could buy the rest of the game, but that's still stupid, because the right way to do that would have been a demo.
What we have now is a lackluster game with the biggest amount of DAY 1 DLC we ever had.

I like that you like this way of thinking.

Personally, I hate it. F2P is really bad for competition. How are tourneys supposed to run this game?
how do they run current games? You have copies of the game and all the DLC. Same deal. (If the developers are nice, they might even provide free codes for tournies to use to get full access to promote the game)

I agree KI is likely to bomb simply because it doesn't have a casual fanbase ala SF or MK. But it was FRONT STAGE ON MICROSOFT's E3 show1 That suggests that they don't see it as a niche game, but more of one that can be overall a big success.

That's not how big companies think. No matter how much shit you see from Microsoft nowdays, they still have some smart people on their team, who know what's up.
These smart people know that Killer Instinct is simply not a franchise that will make you a ton of money, no matter how much effort you invest into it. It's simply way too specific as a franchise and the amount of vocal people (who make you believe that everyone wants the game) don't make a difference.

Their money goes into stuff, from which they expect the best results and WB / DC are a great example as well. Take a look at the current 4 DLC characters ... Who wanted Batgirl, Scorpion and Zod? No one, but WB / DC think that with these three characters they can cross-promote the biggest amount of other potential cash-cows and therefore they give you that, even though you had people here and on Twitter screaming for Martian Manhunter. You think that's everyone wanting Martian Manhunter, but in the end of the day Scorpion makes them more money and hell, maybe Zod will make them more money as well.
JUST because of the movie. Never underestimate the casual fanbase and the casual fanbase does not care about Killer Instinct.
