Future of Top Mk Players

I've been thinking after NEC. Top players will be needing secondary characters even if they play top tier. Look at Cd Jr who made his comeback against detroit with one of the best smokes out there. And the recent matches of Pl who has both the best KL and raiden at the moment.

I think this would be the next step for the top players at the moment. what do you guys think? Matchups are really important in this game. and CD JR has proved how affective counterpicking can be.

Please discuss.

i will say right now top 5 to watch out for are detroit cdjr Pl slips and chris g

i can see evo finals being Pl vs Cdjr or detroit | Slips replacing one

Tom brady say he has new main with a lot of chars he uses he could be formidable counterpicker

final round will be a blast to view i vision those 5 fighthing for 1st there Tom may make top 3 and shake the world

cheers

Noob Saibot shall conquer all.

Aside from my useless hopes, having a backup character(s) is important.
I believe its also good to mix your strengths and weakness, and types of strengths.
EX: If you play as Ermac, learn Liu Kang
EX: If you play as Ermac, learn Subbzy

While Detroit eventually beat CDjr at NEC, CDjr put up a good fight with what looked like a Smoke comeback. It is interesting to think about.

I dont fit this case, as my characters are all over the place :p If im in trouble tho, whether against CSZ or Raiden, i usually go to Noob.

I main rain, and my hardest time is with Kitana and Sub-zero because of how well the keep me out. I didn't want to pick a pure zoner as they may actually have a hard time keeping Kitana and Sub out (ironically). I picked up Stryker because I feel he is my best chance against my worst matchups.

If Rain can't get in, I switch to stryker and force them to come to me.

EVERYONE should have a back pocket character ready to pull out at any moment, whether it be a counter pick or something to change the pace, etc etc.

.... they mostly come at night. Mostly.

Totally agreed .... this avoid people being predictable ..... because as much as others top players fighting each other, more known the gameplay and matchup is .... so, time for some good surprises, all of sudden, hehe

Reo and Detroit are good example, both like to explore MK roster, and are able to play different characters, in high level, in important tourneys.

Not going to happen with me.
Im wit u 16bit. I been ermac faithful since april. One thing about this game is the matchups arent so terrible for any character that they cannot win against another. You gotta learn your match up and play to your strengths. As dumb as it might sound to some, you bond with your character. Real talk. You go through ups and downs, buffs and nerfs. I know ima win somethin sooner or later cuz I stuck wit my character and figured out how to win with him.

Gesture Required Ahead

Get on that hook
If everyone used other characters there'd be less bitching about the characters themselves and focus more on beating their opponent.

But since I'm a hipocrite I refuse to learn other characters due to my playstyle and no character can fit my agressive nature with Reptile.

And since I'm a big fat liar I have 2 secret characters I'm working on and 1 of them is actually an old main that I dropped since he was considered OP'd and broken. Some still say that now.

I personally don't preach the "playing to win" mentality. So I don't really believe in counter picking or tier whoring. If my character had 1-9 or 2-8 matchups, then yeah I would probably have a counter for those nightmare matches. But my main's worse matchups are 4-6 or 3-7 at worst. Which isn't anywhere near unwinnable. I have beaten a lot of very good Kabal, Noob, Jade and Smoke players and those are considered like Stryker's worse matchups. If I always counter-picked vs my bad matchups then I wouldn't know how to play them so well. Which in the end would make me a worse player than I am now.

I don't remember who said this, but I remember a top SF player saying that any bad matchup can become 5-5 if the supposedly disadvantaged player knows the matchup well enough.

Matchup charts only take into consideration how certain top players use certain characters. And they assume everyone playing that character has no answers for certain strategies. But just like CD jr has proven with Jax and Rain, tier lists are unaware of new knowledge, tech and personal MU experience. Actually, a lot of top players have proven matchup charts to be "wrong" time and time again.

I think it's fair to counter-pick and essential if you have unwinnable matchups (Sonya vs Kabal or Sub vs Skarlet). But I don't think counter-picking is a must for everyone.

I found that having more than one character can get the drop on the opponent if they are used to a certain playstyle.

But changing between characters can leave someone in a mentally messed up state.

Yes, but I was thinking about a second character that is more than just a back pocket. A good example is CD jr's smoke. His smoke alone could reach top 8 easily IMO, he would do fine with either jax or smoke. Same with Pl's raiden and Lao. I also see Chris G using noob more and more. Art's kenshi is great too. Reo's sonya etc.
It doesn't have to be about counterpicking. In detroit's case at nec grandfinals, I really don't see shang as one of jax's bad matchups, but because detroit knew so much about jax he gave cdjr a hard time. so it could also be an option against opponents who know your character too well.

Edit: after all, I dont think Mk9 is a game where it is really hard to pick up new characters and learn to play well with them, at least compared to other fighting games

As a sindel main I use Kano as my back up. I'm currently learning mileena and noob to possibly take the place of Kano. My main problem characters are raiden and mileena with sindel. Due to my strength being zoning and hit and running and running some more.

What with this sudden surge of people calling other people "traitors" to certain characters?

Kind of a fitting song for this kind of situation.

However, since this game is STILL changing and evolving players have to step up their game in some way by either picking up a new character or getting better with what they know.
