While the graphics are pretty awful, I'm sure the game itself will be fun. Bethesda has never been known to make games with absolutely stunning graphics. I'll wind up enjoying it either way. :D

The Graphics Technology of Fallout 4
The hardware we play games on continues to advance at a rapid pace with exciting new graphics features. Our Creation Engine has evolved to incorporate this new technology in order to empower the artists and designers at Bethesda Game Studios to create an immersive new world. The tech team here is closely aligned with the art team, and together we carefully selected each individual feature based on specific artistic and performance goals we wanted to achieve in creating this world.

The first thing we did after Skyrim was to enhance the Creation Engine’s graphical core by adding a physically based deferred renderer. This new renderer allows us to add many more dynamic lights to every scene, and paint our surfaces with realistic materials. We want objects and characters in the world to feel tactile and grounded, and a big part of that is ensuring that these materials are distinct – that metal reflects light in a distinct manner from wood, for example.

As always, our world features fully dynamic time of day and weather. To create that volumetric light spilling across the scene (sometimes called “god rays”) we worked with our friends at NVIDIA, who’ve we worked with dating back to Morrowind’s cutting-edge water. The technique used here runs on the GPU and leverages hardware tessellation. It’s beautiful in motion, and it adds atmospheric depth to the irradiated air of the Wasteland. Like all the other features here, we’ve made it work great regardless of your platform.

When a rain storm rolls in, our new material system allows the surfaces of the world to get wet, and a new cloth simulation system makes cloth, hair, and vegetation blow in the wind.

The player can go anywhere in the world at any time of day, so we added dynamic post-process techniques that enhance the vibrancy and color of our scenery for maximum emotional impact. Our virtual cameras received a major upgrade as well. We’re not going to spoil every improvement we’ve made, but for those of you who enjoy the technical details, here’s a sampling of what we’ve added to the latest version of the Creation Engine:

  • Tiled Deferred Lighting
  • Temporal Anti-Aliasing
  • Screen Space Reflections
  • Bokeh Depth of Field
  • Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
  • Height Fog
  • Motion Blur
  • Filmic Tonemapping
  • Custom Skin and Hair Shading
  • Dynamic Dismemberment using Hardware Tessellation
  • Volumetric Lighting
  • Gamma Correct Physically Based Shading

If you’re not sure what all of that means, don’t worry. What’s important is how this technology comes together with the art and gameplay of Fallout 4 to create a dynamic, immersive experience – no matter your gaming system. We pride ourselves in being a highly collaborative team, always balancing graphics, gameplay, art, and performance. We hope that when you get a chance to play the game on November 10, you’ll agree.

Fallout 4 designer Todd Howard said in a newly published interview that all of the player's companions - not just Dogmeat - are unkillable. There's a simple reason why they decided against permadeath for companions.

When an NPC companion takes a certain amount of damage, they'll be incapacitated. However, you can help them return to the fight by using a stimpack on them. Howard said in the interview with Bethesda.net that they felt companion death disrupted the flow of the game because players would always restart the fight so they could keep their ally alive
Seriously? This is the scrubby crap that dictates how the game is changed? I hate stuff like this. Give us our hardcore mode where companions die, etc, and let the noobs pick normal difficulty and have infinite life companions.

To remove the ENTIRE death of companions because some people would "restart the game after their companion died" is insanity. No reason at all to remove hardcore mode because some people can't play it. I was going to see if I could ditch DogMeat somewhere because I didn't want to play with an immortal never dying companion, just to find out that ALL companions are immortal.

Disgusted once again at new era gaming.

I honestly don't care about this tbh, I'm happy for Todd and his team to do what they think is best. Besides, and sorry for bringing this old cliche up again, but there WILL be a mod for this lol. Plus games like the souls series exist, so I can get my uncompromising but fair game design elsewhere; there is plenty around these days.

That being said, now that I think about it I wouldn't even considering buying 90% of AAA games, so I guess in most other cases I would agree with you on that one. I'm just glad that there are some AAA devs left that don't constantly shove micro-transactions and bullshit dlc in our faces.

Though to play devil's advocate to myself twice in one post, one of my favourite memories from FO3 was when you go back into your original vault later on and at the end of the quest. Butch wants to join you as a companion and I was like 'sure whatever man, not my fault if you can't cope though' and within 30 minutes he had his head cut off by a raider lol. Didn't reload the save cos he was a cunt anyways. :p

I agree. Giving more options to players never hurt anyone. I remember when I recruited Charon in my current playthrough and we were fighting some enclave dudes. One of them shot a missile at Charon and he just exploded into 50 pieces. I was like "hmmm...well that's the end of Charon I guess."

I don't play on PC so all the talk of mods doesn't help me. The dumbest shit in the game was having a companion get destroyed by 3 DeathClaws just for them to walk it off like nothing happened or reappear super healthy after a quick travel. Or them to get exploded by a rocket to the face only to be "revived" later. Unless there's some mods for PS4 then I'm stuck with Companions from the heavens.

Exactly lol. Like if they want to make the other modes with Immortal Godlike companions then fine, but why REMOVE the Hardcore Mode for people who like it?? Like they want to force you to play an easier game. Companions that die added depth to the game. Do I bring them on this mission? Do I bring one I care little about because they might die on this tough mission? Do I use the ones I like for the easy ones? Do I risk them going in the cave or tell them to wait outside? Gone. Now they're superhuman.

I used to shamelessly go back to where a dead companion was with my new companion and take the valuable loot from their corpse to give to the new companion lol.

I've been there lol. Charon had his sweet shotgun that I took. Honestly, I was glad he was dead. I played a stealth character and I'd be trying to sneak to get around a super mutant then all of the sudden "I FOUND EM, I FOUND EM DURR" and he would just stand up and shoot his shotgun rapidly at things he couldn't even see.

I remember in FO:NV I was in the DeathClaw Cave looking for something, can't remember what. I had the girl Victoria (I think that was her name) and I'm trying to sneak through and she starts going "Argh" and attack through the wall!!! Then they all become alert that I'm there and turn the corner to body me Lmao! Next go around I left her outside haha.

This is why I practically never use companions in Fallout 3/NV. Their AI are retarded for the most part. I remember going to kill the legendary cazador cave and the entrance was swarming with those fuckers. So I try to find a good vantage point to mop them up with muh gating laser, but when I do, "Veronica has died".

I turn around and see the swarm of cazadors attacking me. I died to poison. Thank you veronica. I reload my save, took whatever gear I gave her then shot her head off before killing the cazadors again.

All too easy...
WTF is the real reasoning behind immortal companions? I know what Todd said is just a typical industry claim nowadays and is bullshit. Like are they scared that casual scrubs won't stick with the game long enough to pay for dlc because they rage quit forever after their companion would die? Fuck companions, I'll be ditching them the second I can. In the wasteland its suppose to be every man for themselves

Exactly, every man for himself.

...which is the exact reason why I don't mind having an undying wolf-dog at my side.

Tell us how the netcode is. And no spoilers!
Netcode? There's online features I need to know? Lol.

And no spoilers will be hard with all the hype I'll have haha!!! I'll use spoiler tags if anything and say "huge spoiler" in front of the tag lol!

Nice! St. Mark's place?
They have it at a mom and pop store near the corner of Nostrand Ave and Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn. Leaving work early in about an hour to go pick it up.

Sweet. Yeah, video games new york on 6th st. got it too, but their copies for today are reserved they said, they'll have more tomorrow though. I'ma cop me the digital if I even get it right away. Both of my controllers are broken in one way or another and I need to cop a brand new one to pew pew kids on SWBF. Fallout's coming out at a bad time for me [mostly because I know when Battlefront is a go, I ain't goin campaign over Multiplayer] :( Oh well, at least it ain't goin nowhere.

Controllers are pretty easy to fix, mang. If you have two of the same kind, and they're broken in different ways, then you will have enough spare parts to fix one of them (if you even need spare parts).

And I know this because my little cousins used to rage like a motherfucker when I beat them in SFII. My uncle finally got tired of buying new ones and just started cracking the suckers open.

Nowadays you can just youtube it.

This would normally be true. But I guess Microsoft reworked their planned obsolescence model even further, the controllers breaking in under two month's is working out great. And now with the new and improved screwless controller that you cannot open, they're sure to make a killing. I'm sure there's a way but fuck it, I've already got a way to play GameStop into giving me two controllers for the price of one so... I'll just roll with that. Actually was planing on getting that Elite controller, but did not realize they would sell out in a day and not restock anytime soon.

The hold on Fallout is more of an interference thing than a financial thing. Don't want anything to interrupt my playthrough, but once SWBF comes out, that's gonna be taking up all my game time. There will be a time for Fallout at some point though. [Maybe I'll cave, we'll see.]

Damn lol. Well if you don't have your controller by then you could always use the FightStick to play. :DOGE
