1. Usually it means that its dying. The other possibility is that the thermal paste/solder is beginning to crack causing less contact between the GPU and the heat sync meaning even if the fan is fine, the system will overheat. This will eventually lead to a YLOD and need a fix regardless.

2. Unplugging it won't cause a problem.

Don't be... play... when it goes, you send it to TGE to be fixed. I have had several systems fixed by them. You'll be totally fine.
