Sajam
Nightwing In Retirement
This week's WNF featured a familiar top 3, as well as a familiar winner. Emperor Theo continued his dominance with Aquaman this week at WNF, proving the King of Atlantis is just as powerful as the Kryptonian from Kansas.
Interesting Notes For This Week:
The first round of WNF this week had a few surprising losses. FLK Slayer's Superman was sent to losers in the very first round by Legend's Flash. Krayzie's Catwoman also suffered a loss at the hand of Richusco's Aquaman in the first round. This prompted a very early match in losers between Slayer and Krayzie, which ended with Slayer coming out on top. Steve's Nightwing was also defeated first round by PBoard's Superman in a close 2-1.
Loser's Bracket Runabcks:
After losing to Legend in the first round of the tournament, Slayer made an impressive mess off the losers bracket. After defeating Krayzie, Wonder Chef, and Immortal Angel, he got his runback with Legend's Flash.
Slayer shrugged off his early loss, and used a great combination of whiff punishing Flash's normals, as well as more than a handful of corner resets with dive punch. Slayer looked incredibly strong, and after losing first round made it all the way through the losers bracket into the top 3.
Steve had a similar fate, after losing early to PBoard he was forced to run a gauntlet on his side of the bracket. Playing 4 matches back to back, he defeated Filipino Man's Wonder Woman, Nubcake's Batman, and Richusco's Aquaman before heading up against PBoard's Superman for a runback. Unfortunately, he couldn't carry the dream on NW's shoulders, and suffered another close 2-1 loss to PBoard.
The Top 3:
The top 3 for this week's WNF featured very familiar faces, FLK Tyrant's Grundy, and Emperor Theo's Aquaman in winners, and FLK Slayer's Superman in losers.
Tyrant came out looking dominant, gaining a demanding lead with strong reads and great use of d2 into trait throw. This momentum helped snowball him into an early win in the first game of winner's finals. Tyrant proved too much for Theo, as his great use of armor to beat Theo's defensive options overwhelmed his Aquaman and sent him to losers against Slayer.
Loser's finals started off win Theo gaining a half life lead on Slayer's Superman early. After a great block on a Superman dive setup, Theo transitioned Slayer and gained a huge life lead. After closing the life lead Slayer dropped a potentially game winning combo and took the win over Slayer. Slayer quickly switched stages to TheMyscira. Slayer seemed slightly more comfortable on this stage, but another unfortunate cost Slayer the game again, and led to Theo taking the set 2-0.
Grand finals started strong for Tyrant again, as he pushed Theo to the corner and got a huge damage combo off using corner interactables. This lead wasn't enough, however, and Tyrant's lack of clash proved to be his downfall as Theo took the first game. After a few execution errors, Theo took the frist lifebar off of Tyrant in game 2. Tyrant was unphased, however and pushed Theo back into the corner. When Theo attempted to armor through his throw, Tyrant used an incredibly smart armored throw on reaction to beat Theo's option. Despite his strong play, Tyrant went down 2-0 early to Theo as he popped off in-between matches.
Theo's momentum seemed to only increase as he took a huge lead in the 3rd game that lead to him winning another game after resetting the bracket. The final game between the two came incredibly close, as Tyrant remained alive with some clutch techs and reads, but it wasn't enough to stop Theo, as he won WNF with a strong 4-0 in grand finals.
Congrats to Theo for winning another WNF!
