Dropped df/db Specials (XBox)

BillStickers

Do not touch me again.

So I just got my shiny new XBox today. Hooked it up, put MK in, went to practice mode to get accustomed to the controller layout.

First started with Jade when I noticed that 3 wasn't linking into db2.

Went to Kitana, found that fans and cutters were coming out inconsistently.

Finally went to Sonya, tried to do a basic divekick BNB and got the result you see in the video.

Symptoms
------------------
  • Practice mode recognizes the inputs from the controller, but the special moves don't actually come out.
Specs i'm working with
------------------
  • XBox 360 (250 GB)
  • Wireless XBox 360 controller
  • 480p (HDMI cable hasn't come in yet)
  • Ethernet (not that it matters, this is offline as well as online)
  • MK: Komplete Edition
Attempted fixes (non successful)
------------------
  • Restarting XBox 360 (both via software and hardware)
  • Installing MKKE on the hard drive
Proposed explanations
------------------
  • MKKE is very buggy (well ok but you'd think I wouldn't be the first person to notice such a glaring bug)
  • Controller is defective (doesn't make sense since the game is registering the inputs on screen)
  • Current screen resolution (very unlikely but you never know)
  • My timing is off (seems unlikely; I've got these inputs down on PS3 with no issues, plus cartwheel is bufferable off of 21 anyway)

Any ideas on how to fix this or who I should reach out to to get this resolved? I really don't want to have to spend money on another controller or game just to test out if the inputs are working. I'm considering returning the entire console and forgetting about it.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

You have any other games?

The only thing I can think of doing is deleting the game then re-installing.
Maybe deleting the system cache could help.

Very weird.

Thanks, I'll try deleting the system cache and reinstalling. I'm pretty unfamiliar with the xbox troubleshooting process, so if you have any other tips like that, please pass them along! :)

Are ya' ready for MK11 kids?!
Haven't used a brand new 360 controller in years, although maybe the D-pad just needs breaking into a little? I've been trying out Tekken Tag 2 with my new DualShock 3 on PS3 and have been getting hella dropped inputs for no apparent reason, and it's literally only been that game giving me input problems so far.. (it was just a test run though, I usually just use the age old Sixaxis pad for fighters :p)

1. Can you upload a video of the problem without the dive kick? Might just be execution issues, inputting commands too fast.
2. Try a different controller.
3. Try a different MK9 disc.
4. Try a different Xbox. If this works, sorry about your bad. lol.

Also, since you are new to xbox I recommend setting up your router properly if youre going to play online. Helps with connecting to people.

STRYKIE I think you may be right, but it's so strange that the practice mode shows the inputs correctly!

I've found what may be a temporary fix (?). It seems that doing half circles instead of df and db helps the inputs come out. In the video, i first attempt a divekick combo without the half-circle input as a control, then input the same combo again with half-circles for the cartwheel (military stance doesn't seem to be too terribly affected).

I'm going to test this with characters with actual half-circle inputs and see if it affects them at all.

It could be that Practice Mode is fucked. I was raging at it a while ago when I was trying to up my execution with Sonya's 114 xx MS B2 string where it would happen fairly conistantly that the Command List would show the correct inputs but I would get 114 xx Arc Kick. I play on ps3 with a Qanba Q4 stick. Love that stick but man is it ever sensitive.

Also, I've talked to a number of x-box players that don't use the official pad (for fighting games at least) and they said the reason is that it's too picky. If you don't normally use the x-box pad, I'd suggest switching.

Dude, this whole thread is completely pointless.

I'ts the D-Pad. It's a well known fact that it's a complete pile of shit and causes dropped combos and skewed inputs all the time. It's not the game, it's not you, it's that lousy D-pad

Dear BillStickers,

I have never had this problem ever while playing MK on either PS3 or Xbox, on any type of monitor on any resolution, with any controller/stick (ps1, ps2, ps3, 360, MLG TE, HitBox)

It's probably you
I'm uploading a video that chastizes you to l2p uploading right now. It's notable that the PS3 has 1 frame of lag behind the 360, so this could be hindering your execution, although 21~cartwheel is child's play and there's no reason for that to be dropped...

How is it you Americans say, 'QFT'?

I have a Qanba and I love, I only exclusively play on it but my one gripe is how sensitive the stick is. Do you ever go to do a dash uppercut and sometimes a special move comes out? It's because in this game, a d, f can simply be done with d, df on the stick and it registers the same. It's a bitch because I find doing dash, U3 or U4 moves nearly impossible cause my character jumps forward instead. This is a shame as I use CSZ a lot and so doing a U4 after 21, 2+1 is tricky for me. I also really enjoy Skarlet, but again, im hampered by my ability to not be able to hit her U3 consistantly in the middle of combos. I mean other than that, it's a great stick and I just love the buttons on it.

I move about in this game far better with a D Pad but I hate the button layouts for a D Pad. I wanted to get one of those Frankenstein pads but it just seemed too much effort as only one guy in America builds them for people.

PS why are you inputting 1 twice so much? It's 21df3, not 21df13... that's probably your problem

heres the video, if you have a problem with scooby doo fuck you
No need for hate. I entered the input exactly correct several times and it still wasn't working. Even with the extra button presses, that's what negative edge is for. Thanks for your awesome response, though.

Why would I know that? I've literally owned an XBox for less than 24 hours. Is this really true?

Slow down your inputs, that's all.
I'll try that--I just don't understand why I can enter my inputs like a bunny on crack on the PS3 and the Vita and they work just fine.

I'm Canadian but those damned shortforms are everywhere :p

That's actually why I'm sticking with the Qanba. It's brutal and frustrating, but I figure that once I get that down, the rest will be cake. My suggestion to you would be to just sit in the lab moving around for hours on end to get the movements into muscle memory. Also spend time with the moves and specials that give you grief, starting out nice and slow. Accuracy is the key here since you are trying to commit the proper movements to muscle memory. Once you don't have to think about what you are doing anymore, the speed will come.

I'll try that--I just don't understand why I can enter my inputs like a bunny on crack on the PS3 and the Vita and they work just fine.
Sonya specifically is horrible for that. For the most part, you can't input like a rabbit on Viagra with her since it will lead to dropped kombos and unwanted specials. It's actually pretty rediculous how slow most of Sonya's moves can be input and buffered and still roll over her opponents :D

BillStickers, you are doing the input for the cartwheel too early. I thought the same as you, but if you input the special button before the move that is canceled into the special even connects, there is no way for it to come out.

Also, Xbox doesn't suck, it's the training mode that does. They improved the input readout on the Vita to show buttons pressed at the same time as I am sure you are doing in your video for the forward input+A.

Advice, slow down a bit on the cartwheel.

Ashenar

Just a slightly above average player.....
Konqrr you ever have any delays at times on inputs after standing 3 I feel at times kenshi corner combos seam to wack out after 3 rk.

It seems that slowing down does work (inconsistently since it feels so awkward to change a habit I've had for a year), but i don't really want to have to adapt to a non-tournament standard when the PS3 reads my inputs just fine :(. Oh well. Maybe I'll just use the Xbox as a media center extender.

Also, it's not just a combo linking issue--naked cartwheels, fans, staff slams, etc don't come out. I played Derptile yesterday and was standing there mid screen spamming standing 3 instead of ex cartwheel, lol.

I just can't imagine that Microsoft or NRS would put a limit on input speed especially when the inputs themselves are registering.

The only thing I can think of is that you are doing df3 instead of df+3 since you are no used to the controller. Practice mode doesn't actually show the distinction between the two in the input display.

I owned the game for both consoles and I noticed this problem before time to time. I read about how the Xbox controller is horrible for fighting games, so I went out and purchased a madcatz fightpad and it made all the difference in the world.

ugh xbox 360 pad. when i first bought/played this game it was on xbox with xbox pad. I had hella trouble doing anything consistently. at first i thought it was just me being a noob but after a couple weeks I felt i really was getting the hang of it but was still having major xcution issues. I loved the game though so i decided to get a madcatz sf4 fightpad. completely cleared the xcution issues. after this bought a ps3 version and only issues i had with ps3 pad were the pressure sensitivity which wasnt a problem with the face buttons just shoulder buttons caused issues with enh moves xray and block timing. since i moved on to xbox layout stick mainly cuz im an old fart who played original mk's in arcades back in the day. this is the best way to go imo (besides maybe ps2 pad or hitbox). i did it mainly for nostalgia. main thing is you wanna know that your controller is extremely accurate. the 100% worst option for this game is a 360 layout pad the buttons feel uncomfortable and the actual pad is the worst ever, its made more for shooters, def not for fighters. imo xbox is best controller for shooters and ps is better for everything else.

It happens with my stick as well. I have to slow down my inputs to stop it.
