Before you get into this post, understand that I'm not mad at anybody with what I say. I'm just trying to help out on some things alot of people don't think about.

*note: there's a tl;dr at the end, but I'ma make you scroll down there so hopefully a random line or two sinks into your mind*

I had a good time at Battle and Brew, in spite of the fact that my first time up was to commentate MK9. The tournament was, to my knowledge and understanding, a success. The venue was awesome (great food), and it seemed as if everybody had a good time (except for Batman's controller. ^_^)

However, the one thing that I didn't think so highly of is something that's been happening for a while in GA now. The way people handle commentary and the stream.

I feel as if people have no order, no sense of direction, and use no thought about the importance of ALL aspects of a stream. "Well why is it important?" Well, the main reason -I- think it's important is because the footage itself are the recorded documents of the community, be it the archived streamed or the future youtube videos. If the audio is filled who ultimately seem "uninterested" in the match itself, how interested should a person who is not from that circle feel?

Lemme ask that question another way, if you decided (for whatever reason) to watch a MvC3 vid, how interested would you be if the commentators were talking about everything EXCEPT FOR the match? Even if it were the grand finals of that tourney, I can assure you you wouldn't be as interested as you would if they were doing "the right thing." That's the point I'm making on this.

And again, I'm not saying this because I'm upset with specific people doing this. I've been doing a lot of commentary for a variety of (fighting) games at a variety of levels. Local to worldwide. I understand that everybody doesn't want to get on the mic, try to be all "dignified and proper" and try to "educate the masses" with their knowledge of the game. Hell, even I don't like doing that very often. All I'm trying to say is that if you want to get on the mic, you should consider what the people are watching now (the stream) and watching in the future (the youtube).

It makes no damn sense to completely derail a match that was held FOR THE STREAM and start giving shoutouts and comments to people in the stream. For one, it makes the match itself seem less important. Why are you going to have Batman and Toxic hold their match, play on stream, and then not give a flip about it when it's there? Because beyond that, when people are NOT focused on that, guess what goes on the youtube? Yeah, "shoutouts to (person from Washington), yada yada yada". That would make me, the viewer, want to go look up stuff about THEM rather than this match I'm supposed to be watching because "Well, the people at the tournament seem to think this guy on stream is way more important than these two people playing."

I'm not saying to never pay attention to people on stream, not to talk to your friends/associates/fellow ____ players/etc. I'm saying to save for when there's no action on stream. THAT'S when it's supposed to happen. You ever wonder why people kinda worship the mic Ultradavid touches? Simple stuff like that.

The other thing that happened a lot, and which kind frustrated me, was the way people were literally competing to talk over each other. Either over another person or literally paying NO ATTENTION WHATSOEVER to the person commentating with them.

That has nothing to do with whatever bullshit "commentary class" anybody puts me into, I just -do not- understand how a person can sit next to a person with a mic and act as if they don't exist. It's disrespect to the person, but more importantly, it comes off as classless nonsense to the viewers.

Again, I'm not (entirely) upset with this. I was there, I understand the circumstances. It was kinda hard to hear in that place, people had to sit on different levels, etc etc. But there are simple things you can do to make this occur less. You can simply look at the same monitor (be it the stream monitor or the live station), you can look at each other when you're trying to have a conversation, somebody can play the "back seat commentator" to a "main guy" guy (which are commonly referred to as the "color commentator" and "play-by-play" commentator, respectively)

It's a team effort.

When people watch streams and youtubes and they're not lulled into a bore as people rant on about other topics or they're not instantly turned off by two (or more) people rambling on at the same time.

I'm not upset that anybody asked me to hand them a mic. I totally planned on letting other people commentate simply because I'm a guy who's generally good at commentary, not a specific Mortal Kombat player. I would rather you (the MK players) have a person or two who's good at commentating so that you can draw attention to your own scene.

It just frustrates me to watch people sorta stand out of line and bring everybody with them.

1) When there is a match, you talk about the match. Most people won't care if you know everything (or anything), whether you talk about yourself, or whether you trash talk the hell out of that new girl as long as you TALK ABOUT THE FUCKING MATCH. Save the shoutouts, the other match updates, and anything that's NOT the match till there is downtime. Think that's a dumb concept? I'll show you some youtube vids that prove this point.

2) If there's somebody else on the mic with you, ffs know they exist. You don't have to like them, you don't have to get along with them, but if you try to ignore them and go on your own way, both of you sound like retards. Commentary TEAM.

The summary) If you give enough of a flip to grab the mic, give enough of a flip to do it right. Even if you just want to boost your own ego, there's actually a way to do it correctly and have people think you're a competent commentator.

Look Dogy, dude was on stream saying that the MK Community would get shit from Team Spooky if the commentators didn't give him a shout-out. Whether or not he had that power is unknown, but seeing that show up over and over elicited a response.

Getting in bad graces with already established members of the community just to do a favor for some guy I don't even know is the last thing I want to do. I'm sorry and really hope that this didn't mess up my image with you or the MK Community as a whole.

Because to be honest I don't want to be known as the dumbass who interrupted a very important match for a guy. It is really bad to know that people would lose respect for me because of that. Then every tournament I end up in I could be known rather than an alright player as "the idiot who takes the mic in the middle of the round to give a shout-out". I neither wanted to give the shout-out, nor especially grab the mic from the commentators in the middle of commentating to give a shout-out. I know this is stupid but it would be nice to be assured that I'm not going to be looked down upon by the Georgia fighting game community as a whole, for just one event. If not, I don't know what I can respond to an entire community who thinks that I'm a bad guy.

Pig and I were talking about some of what you posted yesterday. I went through the entire archive and by far the most entertaining parts of the stream (aside from the chug contest) were when you (Dogy) were commentating. You did a great job of keeping the guest mic peeps on point. Thank you for giving everyone the advice that we need to improve the quality of the stream. I agree 100% with your comments and I know I was one of those people that did not always pay enough attention to the actual match. In the moment in seems that talking to stream monsters or what not makes sense but the replay value for anyone that was not in attendance is awful. Heck I was there and some of the things that were said I was like whatever.

So next time during a match I promise to only talk about the match, during breaks between the matches either talk about the previous match/shout outs/answer stream monsters questions/short interview with winner or loser of previous match.

I honestly said all this because this is 'bout the 5th time I've been at a GA tourney and this stuff's gone happened. I feel obligated to saying something because again, I'm not specifically a "MK head", so I can't be around all the time. A lot of these things are stuff people don't think about for a number of reasons. I mean, really, you probably hear Arturo foaming at the mouth about "shoutout this, shoutout that", but how often does he do so DURING a match?

That's the kinda stuff I'm getting at. That's why I didn't put any names in there.

I was trying to advertise more MK9 tournaments being held in Ga, where the people could view them, the start of online Mk9 tournaments with prizes etc which was apart of my big announcements along side Funky P's big announcement BUT that couldn't happen people wanted to shout out during GRAND FUCKING FINALS....

I was like wow dude really..that's so disrespectful to the players and your community, I admit my loudness in the background as well as ATL Virus/I.C. Pokchop but when I was close to the Mic and yell out something...it was in regards to the match AND because I hate hearing one on one "Conversations" with commentators to someone inside the chat for an extended period of time, it's not always about the stream monsters.

Ala if anyone saw Seasons Beatings yesterday once Chris Matrix was on commentating and that shit urked the holy hell out of me, his lack of knowledge, his in-ability to complete a formidable sentence, his "My Friends only" biased brought negativity to the stream.
Plus he is a follower not a leader, he isn't an innovator/creater he just repeats what the other person says, gets loud and annoying and it turns people away, Justin Wong who isn't even a classic commentator had to put him into his place numerous times while they were side by side, thennnnnnn came Yipes, we all know the numbers would ad least double once he got on the mic due to his many many catch phrases and slogans, the brokentier t-shirt promotions etc but did you hear how many times Yipes had to check matrix on talking to the stream or talking over a match or how many times he had to tell a grown man "SHUT UP"!!!

That ish was sad, I literally had to turn my volume down when I saw darkness on the screen (C.Matrix) I knew nothing was going to come out of his mouth productive and the best example of that was when the Baltimore player came up and defeated floe, hands down showed the U.S. he had skill and play ability but... no one knew who the hell he was because Matrix wanted to turn the match into his own comedy hour segment, thankful to my man (No homo) D Nyc3 and Skisonic for rectifying that situation and attempting to get some word out there for and about the player.

As for the commentating.... I apologize if I wasn't on topic 100%, it was my first time on mic. Plus this is only my 2nd MK9 tourny, let alone a tourny I've been to with a professional stream. And the first fight is Pig vs a Cyrax player? Extra-awesome. You along with Reo's CSZ fights VS Brady have made him a priority for my mustard.
This is gonna be gooooooooood.

The one thing that I try to implement every time I fight Mileena is that, as Cyrax, it's ALWAYS gonna be a defensive fight, just because of how easily her specials eat his offense, and he just seemed like he was trying way too hard to fire up a beatdown when it would've been easier just to bait & punish the TK assault. Naked Nets against Mil end like naked elderly people: dishearteningly ugly.

Thanks dude, but I am glad you pointed that out. I really didn't know about this, and if you didn't say this I probably would've kept doing this, as messed up as it sounds, I keep doing stupid shit until people tell me I'm screwing up.
