Bad Online Experiences...

Okay so first things first, im a newer player and im nowhere close to some of the members of this forum, but I like to think that I am improving and can do well enough against an average player. However, I recently have been trying to play online, with embarassing results. Offline, I can pull out some decent combos with Kabal (my main), but online the lag is sooo bad that I am helpless to do anything. It ruins this part of the game for me, and it's just a slight lag! How do you guys deal with this? I want to play other REAL people but my only choice is my younger brother. I'm just really disappointed how difficult it is to play online. Anyone else hating online right now?

netplay ruins every game. doesnt matter what genre, what style, what...ever.

netplay, either because of lag or players dropping/quitting/acting like idiots always ruins the game.

you can still go to a chatroom and check peoples connection before play. 3+ bars should do it. but be sure to wait a while til it shows the real number of bars not the default 4.

on PSN, i have had very few good connections, regardless of connection speeds. I play it on Gamespy and frame rate. Its very hard to get off any decent combo and button lag leaves you open to stupid stuff/spammers. I hardly ever use the online.

I feel like a lot of people play just for the fatalities, their only goal in the match is to fatality you. They may not know how to play, but you can bet your ass they know the fatalities. So that aspect is frustrating, that and the CONSTANT DESYNC NRS. I dont play online much anymore. Sometimes its fun with a few beers, but other than that.... meh

One of the things I do enjoy online though is corner trapping someone and having them rage quit on me. That always gets a good chuckle.

netplays doesnt ruins everygame. bad netcodes for certain conditions (netcode not good enough to hide the lag for 2 players who have a certain delay between them) results in horrible gaming experiences online, just that. And about the players, I do prefer to deal with idiots online than offline, coz I can just ignore/block them, and to play just with the guys I know that are good and cool, just like Id do if I would play offline.

Sadly, mortal kombat's netcode is the worst of the new generation of fighters, even SF4's crappy one is much better than MK's.

Messiah, you're from Carmel? I'm from New Paltz!

On Topic: To "enjoy" online play, it's really about figuring out viable online combos vs not viable online combos. I main Reptile, and I know that offline I can nail the 1,2,2, njp 100% of the time and the 3,2,1,dash, njp 75% of the time, but online is a different story. I adjust my combos so that they're easier inputs and I won't drop them. Does it mean I do like 5-8% less on any given combo? Usually. It's better to play consistent and play well than go for maximizing your output and dropping combos/playing inconsistent. This mentality goes beyond online play in certain scenarios too, IMO.

I am about an hour from ya.. Putnam county = http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Brewster,+NY&daddr=New+Paltz,+NY&hl=en&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=51.04407,77.431641&geocode=FUSsdwIdULGc-ykj3VJtfk3diTGzAzUxO70low;FYkEfQIdZoaV-ymNj-69hBjdiTFvK-NlS37Bgg&mra=ls&z=11

But yeah, i do have online combos I use as opposed to real combos, but i find it fucks up my timing when playing online vs. local. Prefer local games and i am trying to get some people together to play at my place or where ever. go here or add me PSN = http://testyourmight.com/forum/showthread.php?4432-Any-New-York-City-region-area-players/page8

Yeah :p Examples of 5 minute chars?

Nightwolf: Shoulder, when fullscreen, thunder and bow.
Baraka: EXCharge, spark
Stryker: Fullscreen pistol/grenades, that low grab roll
Kitana: Fans, square wave
Jax: Charge, projectiles
Cyrax: Throw bomb, then block low waiting to uppercut
Raiden: Don't get me started

And btw NRS, I've never pulled my cord on this game in my life...
So explain to me why I have 130+ disconnects?

I think it might just be you're connection. I get into game with other people with decent connection and the game goes fine. But if the other persons connection is not good then it can be pretty laggy.

I don't know if im just lucky or something but I find people with good connection all the time. I almost never get into laggy games.

The only problem I have with NW is wakeup shoulder; I don't think anyone is even allowed to complain about Baraka.

I’m a Raiden player and I can tell what you mean. But the way I do the teleporting is incorporated into a strategy that has almost 0 holes in it. So unless you're and experienced player that can punish Raidens tele, you have pretty much no chance.

I hate it when people disconnect. Definitely a top 3 annoyance in the game.

Hmm I'll try that chatroom idea. I use an Ethernet cord hooked up to my computer so it's odd that the connection is bad, but then again I don't really know what factors could contribute to a slow connection. Haha before I was just raging because all last night I was getting really laggy games and wasn't having fun. Odd thing is, I have had smooth games before so maybe I was just unlucky idk.

i got the poison
Playing closed eyed helps.

But yesterday i was mad. Couldn't react to anything (which sucks when you play Smoke), wake-ups fail, combos fail and even if i win, it feels like i was just lucky or spammed better.
I used to think SC4 online was bad, i was so wrong.
3/5 bars in SC4 equal 4/4 points in MK.
It's a shame actually. The game is so much fun but online is 90% annoying.
Not to speak of the people who quit when i successfully shake/:en shake their attacks more than 3 times, rarely happens though, only on anticipation + grrreat execution luck.

Screw online for real.

online

You will encounter alot of elitists concerning online play with this game. For the overwhelming majority of people playing any game, online is the online thing available. Not all of us live in major metropolitan areas or are college students with the time to go hang out around some vidja game store talking bout vidja games. Not all of use play in/care about tournaments. Dont worry about them, first of all.

Secondly, online with MK used to be pointless. The game's netcode was the worst I have seen in a long time, worse than trying to play CS on a 14.4 modem. But, its alot better now. Keep in mind, this game is peer to peer, and therefore your online experience is only ever going to be as good as the person with the shittiest connection. Do everything in your power not to be that shittiest connection. Turn off all your porn, all your netflix'n, all your VOIP, and make your grandma stop downloading meatloaf recipes while your playing. Even if things are perfect though, you will still sometimes have problems, especially if your ISP sucks or your hardware is not configured properly and of course if the other guy is the weak link. I have a blazing fast, business class fiber-optic connection and the majority of the time now (since the game has been patched and the network issues improved) i can get a game that is wonderfully playable and mostly lag free. However, UE3's networking framework was never stellar, and NRS is not exactly the most experienced developer when it comes to vast multiplayer projects like MK. This game does not handle latency very well, and its partly due to the fact that its a fighting game and even if both players are pinging each other at something like 30, its going to effect the ultra precise, pixel perfect timing based gameplay. If everyone in your game of halo, or whatever other silly manshoot your playing, had a ping of 30 you would be in hog heaven. In MK even when things are perfect there is going to be a noticeable input delay. It causes those precise timings and combos you have learned in practice mode to function differently. Sometimes you will go for a deep jump kick, and nothing will happen, because you pressed the button when your character was in the perfect spot, but the latency caused the kick not to activate until you had already landed. These things make ones brain itchy, and can be frustrating.

But you can compensate, and its not all that hard. If your getting a good connection, you can fairly easily teach yourself to compensate for a degree of lag. Some characters its harder, some its easier. You need to learn what combos are lag friendly and which arent. Anything with a dash in it will be exponentially harder, but not at all impossible. When you do something cool in practice mode, sometimes you have to look at it and say "Hmmm, how can I make this simpler and easier online, without ruining it?" Sometimes you gotta accept that you need to drop a few moves out of your combo, skip moves, do other moves instead even if it means less damage, just so you can get your completion chance higher online. Eventually, if you stick with the character and give it effort, you can do everything online you can do locally. The elitists are right about one thing though, and that is that online MK is somewhat different than local MK, enough so that it changes the experience.

Dropping Combos like a MotherFucker!
Three weeks ago I put up Mortal Kombat. Decided not to touch it for a full two weeks, and just watch gameplay videos.

A week ago I picked it back up, and after very little practice, I'm playing Expert Mode with little difficulty (except Shao Khan... I still hate him).

Today I tried online. Holy shit... the input delay is ridiculous. I felt more like I was watching someone else play. I've officially given up playing online, and not because of spammers or ragequitters, but because it is a completely different beast than offline play, and I can't see how I can possibly be good at both of them.

I think online playing has improved a lot since the begining, that indeed was awful.

Worst part is waiting for a ranked match.

It has gotten better, but it still suffers from unnecessary lag. Getting any combo off it always 5x harder than playing local. I cant even play my room mate who is one room away without lag. I blame Gamespy and all the stupid BG stuff eating up frames. They should reduce the BG frames and fire gamespy. Guess we will have to wait till the next version of the game.

I don't play online... ever. I haven't even activated my Kombat Kode. I'd rather go out of my way to find people locally to play, even if it ends up costing me money.
